Most unfriendly staff we’ve encountered, felt like talking to robots, food was mediocre, hotel outside of room was freezing, bed and pillows were hard. We had two Onsens in the room and that helped as it was only one night.  Room was clean and we choose the higher end.

Not worth the price.

I have been thinking if I should write this review but I decided to do so in order to warn others of the experience we had received during our 2 nights stay. This was a very unpleasant experience. We travel very frequently and stayed in many hotels/accommodations around the world including Japan several times in our lives. We know what is basic customer service and we are not the demanding kind of guests. This place is very unlike the typical Japanese hospitality and culture. To be fair, the lady who checked us in on the first day was quite polite, but we felt somewhat strange when the lady who showed us our room spoke to us in a rather unfriendly way. I understand that English may not be their first language but when she was introducing us to the features of the room, she was expressionless and spoke like a unwilling robot. Next was the horror that made us very uncomfortable during our 2 nights stay. The room was very dirty and filthy! There were many spider webs in the corners of the room, windows glass and doors were dusty, had many stain/ and water marks, there was also used tissue in the toilet bowl and even the closet that stored our mattress and pillows had dust and debris. Though our room came with 2 onsens, they were filled with a lot of mold and other ‘stuff’ floating in them. The pillows  was also very hard. There the bathroom floors and walls were more mold. Sorry we did not take much photos of what was mentioned as we felt disgusted enough. We did not mention this to the staff as we felt that they did not even have the decency to check on the basics before we checked in. The occupancy was only around 30%. The only saving grace of this place was the food. It was very well prepared and presented. The next day, we requested to have breakfast at 0730 but decided to go down earlier at 0720 as we woke up early and was feeling hungry. When we got to the first floor, I was the first to smile and said Good Morning to the guy grilling fish near the reception. Not a word of pleasantries and started shouting to us, ‘Breakfast not ready, go go go!!’ and gestured to chase us away from the area. We were so shocked and wondered what we have done. Never have we asked or requested for anything or said anything till this far since the first day of check in. Same for the other staff, we did not feel welcomed and was not treated with basic customer service. The only person who was friendly and had some basic manners and courtesy was the more matured lady who served us during breakfast. She was well mannered, polite anx friendly. This place felt a little creepy also. We will definitely not return and will not recommend this place at all to anyone. Definitely not worth the money and experience. Do not be fooled by their photos and website.

Stay at your own risk!

Lovely low/moderate cost ryokan with high end ambiance and dining experience. 20 years of onsen hopping on visits to see in-laws in Japan and now as temporary expats due to husband’s job transfer. We mostly stay at low end to moderate priced onsen hotels with a very occasional splurge. This small moderately priced private-tubs-only ryokan (suited our older visiting friends from the US best) is just wonderful. We took a Japanese style room, our friends had a similar room but with platforms beds, both rooms with gorgeous mountain views, non smoking floor, and each with a wooden tub on a veranda and a separate wooden tub inside the room. Mini onsen in each room. Unbelievably lovely and relaxing in a beautifully remote mountain onsen area an hour by car from Takayama City. The dinner and breakfasts were Kaiseki quality, and we did not even get the top priced meal course. Transportation is available from Takayama and Matsumoto on the other side if you aren’t driving. Loved it!! Caveat per some other reviews: yes our room had a couple of  scrapes on the walls, but was nevertheless very very VERY nice as was the staff. Our friends’ room was flawless. And the entire place is spotlessly clean. There’s such a thing as travelers expecting too much perfection from onsen hotels even when you are not paying the much higher premium prices many older onsen ryokan cost. This hotel is an incredible bargain for the premium quality of the food and overall experience. This place is special.

What a gem

When I booked the hotel for 2 nights, it was a non-smoking double-bed room, However, when I arrived the staff said the non-smoking floor only serve as the twin-bed room. Therefore we can only have a twin-bed room. Fortunately, the bed is bigger enough. There are 2 hot spring inside the room, One is a bathtub and another is at the balcony. The most wonderful hot spring are 2 public hot spring at the roof floor. Both could be reserved for private use. We using it at night time and could see the stars with the hot spring. The food at the restaurant is also excellent.
However, the facilities of the hotel required much repair and maintenance.

Our room was on the third floor facing the lush mountain and river. There were 2 onsen tubs, one semi open and the other out on the patio. The water temperature of the patio tub is just right, but the indoor one was just a bit too hot and needed to be cool down with cold water.

The food was great and they made great use of the huge fire pit at the reception and grill the perfect fish.

Open air private onsen with a view

Come for the onsen, stay for the food. This little ryoken was a wonderful getaway in one of the most beautiful areas of Japan. The food was spectacular: 12 course dinner and Japanese style breakfast served in private rooms. Rooms are sparse: tatami mats and bedrolls on the floor but very comfortable and relaxing. Especially if you get a room with private onsen (soaking tub) in it. They also have onsen on the roof you can reserve. Staff was wonderful and attentive as well, especially Tony. Only drawback is the location doesn't have much happening in it so you really should have a car to be able to go on hikes or sightsee. Would definitely recommend and come back, stay for at least 2 nights.

Intimate ryoken in the Japanese Alps.

We had the pleasure of being a guest here in Nov 2016, and until today where Im booking another trip to Japan that I realized the pure serenity and joy it was to stay at this Onsen Ryokan.

We arrived late in the evening and I realized our wonderful host had checked the bus that comes every hour to see if we were on it until we finally arrived to welcome us.  They prepped an amazing dinner though we arrived after dinner hours.   

 Our room with a private mineral tub overlooking the river was tranquil bliss.  Every meal looked like a piece of art and the attention to detail was amazing.   

Truly an exceptional place surrounded by the beauty of nature.

Beauty. Serenity. Charm

So on my first trip to Japan, I decided to visit a real Japanese hotel, the “ryokan”. This hotel has a private onsen (like a jacuzzi) and great local food! Take one or 2 night to enjoy it! Excited to go back!!
