Location: not as easily accessible or busy as Hirayu Onsen (30 min drive away), next to hotel Nakao Kogen. It's slight uphill, so it's an onsen choice for those who drive and wish some peace. 
Room: got the twin bed room facing the road, but it was still quiet. Beds were OK, but had no cooling aircon, only heater. Wifi was spotty, which is rare in JP. There is a complete modular toilet + bathroom inside, yet most people bathe in the onsen area downstairs. Bathing (cleansing body) can be done indoors in the gender segregated bath (indoors), then you can head into 1 of 3 outdoor free private onsens to gaze at nature (get a wood tag from lobby, and lock the door). The onsen has some floating mineral deposits, so don't be alarmed. 
Food: good quality food for almost 300 usd a night, for bed + dinner and breakfast for 2. Food was carefully manicured with slight western touch, but still more to Asian taste. You can bring your own alcohol, but we still ordered wine from the restaurant for consideration. 
Staff: energetic and friendly, also very helpful.

Good food, very quiet, free private open air onsen

Had a nice stay with my husband, The food is good,the 3 "private onsen"with beautiful view surrounds .I love most the quiet environment , The hospitality,Just excellent ^-^ Definitely we will stay here again for our next visit to Takayama.


The View, The Private Hot Bath,The Food^-^

Stayed here overnight in late March on tripadvisor's recommendation and felt that it was absolutely wonderful. Room was clean and it was refreshing waking up to a snowy mountain right in front of us. The outdoor onsen was a very good experience as well as it was private and the view from the onsen was just great. Stepping into the hot water while trembling in the cold before that was a once in a lifetime experience. As usual for onsen stays, the meals are very good as well. This onsen serves fusion Japanese food. My partner and I enjoyed every dish that was served and were very full after the meal. A very good experience.

Excellent stay

When planning my first trip to the Okuhida region, I wavered for a very long time before finally deciding on the Chirorian for a two night stay.  "Chirorian" is a bit of a Japanese word play on the word "Tyrolean" (as in Tyrol, Austria), this being the Japanese Alps.  This gives a clue at the Chirorian's fusion between Western and traditional Japanese elements.  The place itself looks like a Swiss chalet and the interior is designed as such also.  The rooms are all (or almost all) Western-style, with carpet and beds, which for someone like me (who likes the traditional tatami-and-futon ryokan) was a little bit of a negative (the room was also a little on the small and older side) ... but most of the other places we stayed were more traditional, so it was not a big deal.  The meals are also a blend of East and West and are simply delicious.  After the entree, we had a choice of regular rice or curry rice ... that curry rice was so fabulous, and could've been a meal in its own!  Especially for my wife, who likes Japanese food, but is a little wary of some of the more "exotic" elements of traditional Japanese fare, it was a very nice selection to eat.

However, what was probably the best part about the place was the baths (onsen).  The outdoor baths (rotenburo) are simply fantastic, with great views of the surrounding mountains.  Even better is the fact that they are private, and are "rented" (for free) on a first come first serve basis.  Most other onsen resorts' baths are communal, with private baths that can be rented--at a fee ($10~$20 for an hour would not be unusual), and must be done so ahead of time.  Especially for my wife, who was still getting used to the idea of being naked in front of strangers, as is the norm at onsen, the idea that it would just be the two of us made for a much more enjoyable experience.  Just in general, as a couple, it was great to be able to spend that onsen time together, rather than being separated into men's and women's baths, as is normal at most (but not all) onsen.  At the time of our visit, we were the only guests, and so we had the run of the place--we could soak in any bath, at any time of our choosing.  I'm not sure how this works in busier times, however--I know there are indoor baths, but when it's more crowded you might have to wait a bit for an outdoor bath to free up.  Also, although the price was not "cheap" (I think it was about 20,000 yen per night total) it was actually a good deal as ryokan go, and especially given the great meals and wonderful baths.

The village that Chirorian is located in is quaint and quiet, a nice change from many onsen resort towns which can be overrun by the tour bus crowd.  We got there easily by public transportation (bus) ... speaking Japanese helps (as it does in most places in Japan) but it should still be pretty straight-forward even if you don't speak Japanese.  Although a bit out of the way, that is part of the charm ... it was a nice place to unwind a bit before continuing on to some of the other amazing sights in the area like Takayama and Shirakawago.  

I explored a lot of options before finally settling on Chirorian, but I'm glad we stayed here.  Especially traveling as a couple, and given that my wife was a little newer to the onsen & ryokan experience, it was a great place to stay for a few days.
