Good location close by takachiho gorge but not much nearby restaurant and one convenient store is in distance by walking. Breakfast is very good. The view from room is the best. The host is very helpful. 

Good location and superb view

Ten days ago I spent two nights in Takachiho at the B&B Ukigumo.
My room was large, had a separate little sunroom area with the sink and bathroom.  Also the toilet was in a separate room.  The futon bed was comfortable and there was a TV, fridge and wifi.
I was particularly impressed by the bathroom which contained a bathtub and separate shower so you could wash before you entered the bath just like a regular onsen.
The owner was helpful - he showed me a shortcut to get to the gorge.  The Takachiho Shrine is very close and has a nightly Yokagura performance which I highly recommend.
The B&B is about 15 minutes from the  Bus Center and the area with shops and restaurants so quite convenient.
Great place to stay if you visit Takachiho!

Excellent two night stay in Takachiho

Absolutely loved this B&B! 

We were hesitant at first, since we thought it would be far away from the bus station, but really, it's a short walk. And it's got a great view of the gorge! 

What we appreciated the most was that at the time of our trip, we were trying to do research on the best way to get from Takachiho to Beppu, and the owner was most helpful; he helped us find the best route, and helped us translate a few notices from the train lines (since some of the lines  were under repair a few months prior to the trip.

Breakfast was great, the room cozy, and the location is not only very close to the gorge, but also to the Takachiho Shrine! And when we left, the owner drove us to the bus station so we wouldn't have to lug our bags uphill.

A most helpful host. And great location!

this is a B&B so don't expect the same as you would a ryokan experience.

the owner speaks english and is friendly and helpful with our questions. the room itself was clean, and there is a private bath and toilet in the room.

breakfast was also homemade - overall good value for money and recommended!

In Japan customer service is almost always excellent, so it's important to clarify what you mean by good service here.  Ukigumo doesn't have the legion of staff that make for flawless service at an upmarket ryokan; you'll have to do some things (like make up your futon) yourself.

However we felt our host did everything he could to make our stay a good one, even helping us well after we'd checked out.  It was memorably good service even in a trip with superb customer service throughout.

Added to the good sized room, proximity to the gorge, shrine and town, and the extremely low price, this was a great budget ryokan experience.

Fantastic Value and kind hosts

This place is a short walk from the Bus Center but very close to Takachiho Shrine. I felt safe as a solo female traveller walking back from the Shrine at night after watching the Yokagura performance. 
The hosts, both husband and wife, are the highlights of my Kyushu trip! They were kind, helpful and friendly; recommended good dinner venus and showed me the shortcut to the Gorge. They even offered to send me to the Bus Center on the day I left. The breakfast, though simple, was delicious! I will definitely stay here again if I ever visit Takachiho.
