Pluses for this hotel - wonderful views and all rooms have a view!  Such a friendly, helpful staff.  We were not sure where the room for breakfast was and the lady at the front desk walked us to it which involved going upstairs and down a hallway!  Fabulous traditional breakfast and the staff were very helpful in explaining how to eat dishes we were unfamiliar with.  We rented a private onsen and it was wonderful with great views- we rented one of the open air ones.  Minuses - the hotel needs updating - a little run down and the beds were not great - probably would have been better to sleep on the futons but we aren’t that spry anymore. The restaurant on site was not open anymore.  Overall we have had a wonderful stay.  I love Hirado and would come back to this hotel.  Some of our party speak some Japanese but the staff spoke enough English that along with Google translate, English speakers would do fine!

Wonderful views and staff!

I knew that this was an onsen hotel right from when I booked it. As it was so expensive I looked for other accommodation but there was none available and I couldn’t change the dates so took this risk and booked it. It’s only around 10 minutes’ walk from Hirado Sanbashi 平戸桟橋, the ferry terminal and bus terminal on the central Hirado Wharf where the bus which I caught from Sasebo Station terminates.

Unfortunately, having tattoos, I couldn’t use the onsen but the blurb on the hotel’s web site looks like they are top class.

When I arrived it was very busy and while I was there there was a lull flowed by another wave of guests so I suspect that, depending on the dates of a stay, it could be either very busy or having a lull.

The food was exceptional and was included in the price. However, not really catering to foreign guests left me guessing about the food. It was all pretty much fresh vegetables, pickled vegetables and fish prepared in various ways. And lots of it so I didn’t go hungry while I was there.

The staff were very helpful and between us we managed to communicate to one another.

Would I recommend it? Yes, but it is expensive so that needs to be kept in mind.

Location wise Hirado town is very walkable but if you are intending to go further afield (I kept mainly to sites in and around town) you’ll need a car or a good understanding of the bus routes and times.


Expensive and slightly faded grandeur

The hotel is a bit old but it’s really cheap. The staff is very kind and helpful. 
We booked a Western Japanese room and got a great sea view with Hirado bay, castle and bridge. 

The dinner was excellent! The food are delicious! Abalone and beef are great!
The bath here was interesting experience. You could enjoy onsen while watching the big fish tank. 
Breakfast here was a local one. The lemon sweet potatoes is remarkable. 

Great view and meals 

We arrived very late, on a holiday in the weekend, and with no reservation...... So, they could offer us a room but no meals because it was completly booked with busloads of partygoers.  
So, we stayed in a room in the 'round' hotel, with a view over the bay, the bridge and the castle. The view was great, the room itself (a mix of japanse tatami and western with the beds) was a bit worn out. 
The o-furo was a big room underground with an sea aquarium around. We haven't tried the rotemburo. 
A nightwalk from the hotel to the old part of town was pleasant. It is handy to have a light with you for the last 100 meters (no sidewalks).

Great views, bit worn down room

We were in Hirado to check out the William Adams and English trading sites, which were all very easy to find thanks to great signage in English & Japanese. The hotel's location is superb with fantastic views over  the bay - though we also looked onto a large hospital which looked like it was built of Spam.  Our room was large, half tatami with a traditional low table with hot water pot and Japanese tea. The western side had twin beds with a table between holding a double reading lamp.  Having booked a non smoking room there was an ashtray & smoke or dust coming through the air system made us both cough.  The beds were clean & comfortable, we added the duvets, meant for the futons, as the one blanket per bed didn't keep us warm enough.  In contrast to the room size the bathroom was one of the smallest we've ever seen.  But it had a good deep bathtub with a shower over, although the shower curtain was very clingy.  The tiny acrylic hand basin was in a bad state, very cracked with several cigarette burns around its edge.  The bathroom ceiling had been badly damaged by water from above but had been only partly 'repaired'.  It was quite scary taking a shower under it, as it looked as though it might well collapse again any moment!  The buffet breakfast eaten at long shared tables, had some western aspects and was plentiful, pretty good coffee too. Our second and final day was very wet & stormy so having got back to our room cold & damp, we decided to have a soak in the deep tub then order the pizza promoted in the room blurb.  Our order was accepted but a few moments later we were called back to say that  there were no pizzas or - as it transpired - any alternatives available!  It was suggested that we go out for dinner, then they offered to take us to a supermarket to get something but as we were in our P.J.s we didn't want to do that.  Fortunately we had enough food with us and we'd had a good ramen lunch so we didn't starve.  This hotel is looking shabby, the carpets in the public areas are grubby, the fabric on the upholstered chairs in the breakfast room stained.  It's such a lost opportunity, as it occupies the prime location and could be really something; a real shame.

Needs work.

We stayed overnight at the Hiradokaijyo hotel at the end of December.  Growing up, I had read James Clavell's Shogun, and when I read that the real 'Anjin-san', William Adams, was buried in Hirado, and that there were relics from the early European and Chinese presence in this old port town, I was intrigued and put it on my family's itinerary for our Christmas vacation in Nagasaki.

We arrived from Sasebo by bus (we could have taken the Matsuura train, but that would probably have taken awhile too, since it doesn't get all the way to Hirado island).  The bus trip, which started in the bus terminus across from Sasebo JR Station, took 2 hours, mainly because the bus stopped everywhere.  In retrospect, I would probably have preferred to have rented a car, since it is not only shorter, but also many of the sights in Hirado are more accessible with a car.  I had come with my family, but to jump forward a bit, when I decided to walk to the attractions (like the St Francis Xavier memorial, the recreation of the old Dutch trading house, or the William Adams memorial) the road winding north up and around the bay from Hirado town to the hotel did not have a pavement in some places so I was glad I went without my 2-year old or my pregnant wife.

So we took a taxi from the bus station to the hotel - there seemed to always be a couple of cabs waiting for that purpose.  It was a short 5-minute ride.  As we approached the hotel, my heart sank at first, because the exterior cladding was a slightly discolored white tile cladding, and looked a little bit dated.  However, when I arrived at the lobby my spirits perked up.  The lobby, although empty, was smart and spare but attractively modeled.  We were a little early, but the front desk staff were quite happy to check us in.  

We got up to our room in short order, and put on our yukatas and headed for the baths.  We went to the indoor baths, as the strong winds that day made it difficult to enjoy the outdoor bath.  I had the entire place to myself, which I find tremendously relaxing, and which helps in the contemplative trance one goes into in these places.  The bath was down some stairs, with 8-10 washing stations on two sides and a stone-based pool on the other two.  The temperature was just right, and took the blustery chill out of my bones.

The rooms have wonderful views of Hirado Bay, the skies are very clear, and one can imagine what it must have been like in the early 1600s with some Dutch and English ships at anchor.  The rooms themselves were quite standard for ryokans, spotlessly clean, some minimalist decor, and small adjoining rooms with a tub and a commode on either side.

After my walk to the attractions (it gets dark in December around 5ish) we went shortly thereafter to dinner.  It was one of the larger rooms on the first floor - the food was solid, but not exceptional.  After another soak I was ready for bed.

The next morning, I enjoyed the sun rise in the glorious outdoor bath, which is about large enough for 5-6 people, but not crowded.  The buffet at breafast is excellent, with a wide variety of different Japanese dishes, and truly delicious - all three of us loved it.  When we left, the staff were kind enough to bring us to the bus station directly, which we appreciated.

I thought the hotel in the final analysis was a good choice.  I would have probably preferred to have stayed longer though, given the difficulties of getting there via public transport.

Amazing Views and History Make it Worth the Visit

We wanted to stay in Hirado ... we used Google Japanese beta to search ... and found the kaijko hotel mizukikan.  After reading the beta 
translation, we thought we wanted to go there, and tried to book through their web form.  By email.  

Now, Hirado is a small place, and this was the only hotel we could find ... so we then used a Japanese hotel booking agency with an efficient-
seeming (English language) web site...

We turned up at about 12 (the time we had advised through the booking agency).  The staff were terrified!  They had no English, it was too early 
to book in, and the only thing they understood from the confirmatory email was the price!

Using a phrase book, we agreed to come back after their usual check-in time (3pm), that we could leave our baggage.

We arrived back at five thirty, and were escorted to our room by a member of staff who knew a _very_ little English, who worked very hard to communicate with us.  The room was a little on the shabby side, but had a magnificent sea view.

We decided, despite this being a spa hotel, not to try the onsen (spa bath): we didn't want to give the staff any more difficulties!

Dinner didn't start too well, as our waitress was obviously finding us difficult .... but she relaxed as she realised we were very happy with 
anything she could do to help us understand, and that we really appreciated being told how to eat our dinners!  I just wish our phrasebook had 
told us how to ask 'how do I know when my snails are cooked?'  We asked for wine with dinner, but unfortunately, this was obviously not often 
called for, as the cork broke off in the bottle .... 

Breakfast was among the best we had in Japan - we fried our own bacon and eggs on a brazier, and had more of the excellent local fish.
