Well situated (for skiing) in Nozawaonsen, itself famous for its centuries old hot springs, this entirely wooden ryokan is simply marvelous in every respect. From the front desk welcome from Hiroyasu and Kanga to the gentle efficient service from meal servers, we loved every minute. Traditional breakfasts are varied and tasty; the half board option including a magnificent banquet dinner one nite is a must and of course the onsens are a wonderfully refreshing way to begin and end each day. Can’t recommend this hotel highly enough. 

Warm, welcoming ryokan  

Our stay at Nozawa onsen was relaxing with two nights at Sumiyosiya Ryokan. The hotel managers are friendly and speak relatively good English to communicate, and they are very helpful, giving us printed maps or directions to larger malls (we needed to get something specific). 

We stayed here in very early summer so it was low season. It was peaceful. 

The onsen ryokan is located right next to Ogawa which is where local villagers cook their onsen tamago (onsen eggs) or wild foraged vegetables! It’s lovely, interesting, and really fun to watch old grannies walk up to Ogawa and drop in their net of bamboo shoots to cook inthe piping hot onsen!

The onsen in the ryokan is ok, not the biggest and certainly not the prettiest. They only swap the onsen between genders once a day at 7pm. The rotemburo is small but ok. 

There is a much more beautiful one down the road where a fee is charged but that is much newer, brighter and clean. 

There are many public onsens dotted around Nozawa which are all very interesting but they are all very small and basic. No rotemburo. The waters are very, very hot!! Really too hot to even sensibly soak in! Even the locals were overheard saying it is too hot!

We stayed in a corner room at Sumiyosiya which was quite the walk from entrance or dining rooms. But it was large and spacious. A separate sleeping area (beds) and a sitting room (where the kids slept) and yet another balcony area. Attached bathroom more than adequate for children and adults. The only major complaint is the lack of black out curtains.. goodness the sun rises at 4.30am local time and it soon gets extremely bright! Need blackout curtains!

Kaiseki dinner was good, better the first night than second , and the menu was printed out in English for us. Breakfast was sumptuous: rice and onsen tamago and a variety of fish and small dishes. 

Space for parking just across the road from the ryokan. 

Lots to do around Nozawa. Lovely quiet this time of the year, and the public onsen for feet is just across the garden from Sumiyosiya. A shop next door sells eggs to cook in baskets (18 minutes) next to the feet onsen, and they also sell sasa dango (mochiko with red bean wrapped in bamboo leaves) to cook yourself (5 minutes). They are delicious and SO FUN to cook by yourself in the natural hot spring! We had a lovely time sitting in the late spring air and sunshine “cooking “ and eating. 

I know it gets very busy in winter and it would be so different with snow but Nozawa is lovely as a onsen town to visit. We could walk about in our yukata onsen hopping. There was also a lovely huge shrine and temple further uphill which was just beautiful with tall cedar trees. 

Late spring/ Early summer visit: good location 

Honestly cannot rate this place enough. So much amazing attention to detail over everything! Great onsens, beautiful rooms, delicious food, just perfect! Also great and good value skiing (really quiet) which the hotel happily drive you to.

The best service I have EVER had!

The friendly helpful staff at Sumiyosiya made our stay extra special. We were met at the bus station and driven to the hotel. The staff showed us how the 'no shoes' setup worked and showed us to our room. 

Our 'room' as actually a series of rooms so more a suite than a room. We chose to have western style beds not futons but otherwise the room was totally Japanese. Shoji paper screens opened between the bedroom, living room and the seating area and the decor was lovely. The bathroom had a large wooden tub with separate shower as the Japanese way of bathing involves getting clean before entering the water.

In the morning we were called when breakfast was ready and shown to our private dining room. On the first morning we wore regular clothes but on the other days we dressed in the yukata provided dress daily. We opted for the western breakfast which was very nice indeed though only one cup of coffee was provided. The staff were so lovely we didn't ask for more.

The hotel has one of the many public onsen available in Nozawa. Most people who used the onsen were guests as it's not obvious from outside that there is an Onsen. The water was very warm. Due to the minerals in the water silver jewellery should be removed as it will tarnish. They have a large pool and a small pool so they rotate male / female so everyone gets a chance to use both pools. Onsen bathing is single sex and in the nude.

The location is ideal. The cooking onsen across the narrow road is a great feature and a winding path leads around and down into the main area of the town. The town has great shops and restaurants. Being only a short walk from the moving walkway which goes up to the ski slopes it was very easy to go skiing. It's not possible to ski in or out but the moving walkway makes it easy. We took our own boots and helmets and hired skis and left the skis and our boots at the hire shop 'St Anton'.

Nozawa is a great location for a few days skiing. The snow is just wonderful. Unlike European resorts there are not many eateries up on the mountain so we came down for coffee to the plateau at the first lift or to the side of the paradise slope.

There are numerous chair lifts and some gondolas but no tows :) Note that the chair lifts mostly have a safety bar though no foot rests.

At the end of our stay the staff drove us to the bus station for the bus to Iiama rail station.

a wonderful traditional Japanese experience - and superb skiing

The service was exceptionally helpful. One night we needed a recommendation and a reservation for a restaurant and the reception staff member was only too helpful to assist. You are no more than 10 minutes walk to the Yu Road Moving Walkway up to the snow fields, shops or restaurants. The onsen is a beautiful space and, while the water is fairly hot, it is also meditative. Wearing yakutas to breakfast engaged you (in a small way) with the culture.The Sumiyosiya Nozawaonsen Ryokan is well worth the stay.

Tranquility and excellent service

A charming and comfortable Ryokan with seamless concern and service. Fabulous position to access the skiing areas and in a very beautiful spot. Different from Western 5 stars e.g. the towels are thin and the breakfast eggs, however cooked, and  vegetables are cold. Our lovely ,spotless corner room with great views was up many stairs with an entry hall, bedroom with western beds, a living area with a low table about 8 inches off the floor that had a heavy cloth over it. Underneath is a heater for when you sit with your legs under the table. Then a sunroom, bathroom with a small onsen bath and separate toilet. Totally japanese with paper panel windows and doors all around and very warm and welcoming. They were full for our last 4 days and we had booked elsewhere. On checkout they immediately took our luggage to our next hotel without us asking and without charge. We did buy beautiful jam from the St Anton coffee shop to put on our breakfast toast!!
