This hostel was the very best out of all our travel experiences. The family that runs it are very kind and welcoming people, and let us join in on a lot of their activities. We participated in a kendou practice session, and it was awesome! They were also willing to drive us to and from a nearby station, since we didn't have a car. The dinner was especially nice, some of the best food we have had in Japan. You can't go wrong with this hostel!

A warm and welcoming family-run hostel

Very nice place, the building is a little old but well kept up. If you see the picture of the dinning room it’s easy to see. The family is also very kind and helpful. It is not super easy to find and is a little out of Nikko but if your you don’t need to be right in the city it is very nice.

Excellent stay

Beautiful location, nice stuff. traditional japanese rooms and delicious meals. Just one trainstation to nikkô. transport service to japanese onsen for free!! nice family

THE GOOD:

Arrived at this hostel this evening and staff were instantly very welcoming and showed us around after providing house slippers.  Standard of English is basic, but our pidgen Japanese was understood and they replied in English so it worked out well.

We are in a private room which is HUGE and is Japanese style (tatami mats, futons).  There is a enough bedding in the cupboard to sleep 4-6 so I think the room usually holds more people.

The staff showed us how to work the heater in the room and put in more fuel in case it ran out.

Toilets are spotless (with heated seats) and basin area is also very clean.

There is a TV, but we haven't checked it out because neither of us speaks Japanese.  We have internet in our room, but I think the router in the lobby.

THE BAD

If we can back to Nikko, we would stay here again, but it is a pain to find.  We have arrived after dark so having got to the station, went into a local shop to find out where the hostel was (we were unable to print a map before we left our previous accomodation).  They called a taxi for us who took us straight there.  The taxi was only Y800 which is reasonable (the minimum price for any journey is Y710).  We will probably walk to the station tomorrow, but it will probably take about 20 minutes.

If you are coming from the station and don't want to call a taxi, the directions are pretty simple an intuitive: From the main station exit, head straight over the road (the 110).  Walk down that road for a while until you come to a major crossing with lots of buildings with neon lights.  Turn right at the crossing.  Keep walking, pass the 7-11 store, the hostel is then on your left a little while after.

OVERALL:  We would stay here again, but it is probably worth catching a taxi the first time and have the name and address of the hostel written down in both Romanji and Japanese.
