After reading about the Myoko area I had wanted to visit for a while, I chose Chalet Myoko and am glad I did! The Chalet is a little outside of the town which is not a bad thing, I had no vehicle for my stay but the managers Neil and Jamie were so friendly and accomodating that the car was not missed, every morning there would be advice on where to ski, as it is a Chalet it is a self catering affair which suited me just fine, there is ample space to store your groceries etc. And a good kitchen to prepare your meals and trips into Joetsu were not a problem for emergency chu hai supplies.
There are 5 great resorts within a stones throw of the Chalet, so whats not to love about it.
Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Akakura

We visited Chalet Myoko recently and had a brilliant time. Being a group of 5 we found the chalet and snow/skiing area catered perfectly for everyone. The snow was like nothing any of us had seen and perfect for boarding. Our host, Nora, and the team were friendly, accommodating and so very helpful. 
If you're looking for a great family holiday that has that great lodge feel...Chalet Myoko is the place to be!

Amazing getaway in Japan 

The common spaces where big and you can make your own foods in kitchen just remember to clean after you. Shower and toilet in upstairs was new and clean. Rooms was okay. The hosts will give you a ride nearly every where for payment. It's close enough to walk in akakura slopes or town to eat. I liked it. It was perfect

Nice quests and hosts

The super new bullet train from Tokyo Ueno railway station to Joetsumyoko took less than 2 hours. Our Australian host, Nora, was very welcoming and picked us up from the train station. Chalet Myoko is self-catering with a well equipped communal kitchen and large dining room-cum-lounge. Nora advised us with regard to groceries in the supermarket. Great beds, huge and comfy, great for large people. The Japanese style bathing facilities are downstairs. Very easy-going atmosphere. Free WiFi. Nora helped with suggestions and advice to make our stay enjoyable. She even took us to a second hand shop as I was interested in second-hand Kimonos.
Unbelievably fantastic amounts of snow and wonderful alpine scenery. Ski shuttle bus stop nearby. Ski lifts a short ride away. We stayed at Myoko end of March and went on a day trip to Nagano to see the fascinating temple complex, Zenko-ji, and the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery, nearby in the Shinano Art Museum. Another day trip was to Kanazawa to see the famous Kenroku-en garden, castle, Samurai houses and Geisha quarter from the Edo period. All possible thanks our helpful host, Nora. 

Fantastic Snow English Self-Catering

We stayed for a snowboard holiday for a couple of days. The building looks nice from the outside, the rooms are small the ensuite is good. However, even though we booked private rooms, there was no key for the rooms. Basically anyone can walk into the building straight into your room. Other guests found this strange as well. We were promised a breakfast for 1000 yen but when we arrived, we were told that we have to cook our own breakfast and buy the food. There is no supermarket in Akakura though. The ski storage rooms are terrible, no heating, no ventilation. A strong smell comes out of the room where the boots are kept. The Managers didn't seem to be very interested, no welcome, no introduction. I saw them briefly, didn't even say hello or anything. I can't recommend this place and I certainly wouldn't stay there again. This is not a cheap accommodation. It was a bad choice.

Below expectations.

I booked this place despite not finding many reviews on Tripadvisor, thinking how bad could it be for only three nights (and it is Japan after all!). 

Unfortunately, it was worse than I could have imagined and we had to check out early as it was that bad. 

Most of the common room areas smelt very strongly of cigarette smoke.  The room was dirty, with bugs in the lights and wall (see photos). The room looked as if no one had even cleaned it after being closed up for the previous few months. 

The common areas were untidy, luggage kept out in the hallway (which is a fire hazard), people's items like toothbrushes left out on the common sink along with toothpaste stains on the floor which were not cleaned in the 2 days we were there.  

The managers seemed more interested in making money out of charging people for lifts into town and to the mountains (done for free by other lodges). Very poor snow management - the path up to the lodge was very poorly maintained so that it was very steep and icey - I slipped over on multiple occasions and was lucky not to have done serious injury!

We paid extra for cooked breakfast, which could not be provided in time for us to get to the mountain at first lift. So instead I had an instant coffee (undrinkable), one piece of white toast and a bowl of cereal the first morning only (unfortunately like everything else, I had already prepaid for the three days). After seeing photos of the kitchen, I'm glad we didn't eat any cooked food coming out of it!!!! 

After two nights of trying to ignore all this and having an extremely poor sleep both nights (thanks to the noisy radiator in the bedroom), we decided not to waste our last night on holidays by staying in such a filthy place and checked out early. Some of this feedback was provided to the manager at check out to which he became confrontational to my partner.  

What tops off this horrible experience, is that when providing the feedback to the owner Nora (who also runs a lodge in nearby Madarao), she acknowledged the issues and graciously agreed to refund us for the one night of unstayed accommodation that I had requested (although I should have requested a refund for the whole thing since it was that bad). Since then - radio silence and guess what, no refund over a month later after many unanswered emails! Extremely unprofessional, and terrible management. 

I think if the place charged half the price, some of this might be expected. But for the price we paid ($100 per night per person), the quality was worse and less unhygienic than $50/ night hostels I've stayed at in other parts of Japan! I wished I had booked via booking.com instead of direct from the website, so at least I had a chance of getting some of my money back and Nora would be held accountable for the shocking management and running of the Chalet. 

I hope this review stops others from making the same mistake I did!

Horrible experience - do not stay here!

It was totally not as described!
Horrible place.
It was so dirtty & filthy
Owners are total thieves to tell this is a 2 star location! (I do not understand how internet hotel brocker accept this).  And they charge high price!

The fridge is in the middle of the main living room. And when we came in it was so dirty (there seem to be some dirt foam from last year). we went to the supermarket to purchase cleaning sponges (as there are no in the hotel!). And we clean the common fridge by ourselves.

Near the fridge there is a second fridge... Broken (still in the main living room). We just used it as a counter.

A small gaz heater (Japanese style) was used to hear the big living room. Too small it was cold ( except 1m from it).

The common bathroom had black stains on the wall (my daughter did not want to get in at all). We gave up and ended up going to the local onsens everyday.

Honestly I believe the kitchen is out of Japan safety and cleanly essay laws. With gaz pipes unprotected, electricity seems brokens.

Do NOT use the oven, it make bad smell all over the living room. 

Do NOT touch any of the condiment/oil/herbes these are from 2-3 years ago (I guess), the greasy bottle will stick to your hands. And there a fractals of miss inside (nice!)

Do wash your self all the dishes BEFORE using them as they are now cleanly watched and stored on the floor.

The owners have no sense at all if how to handle recycling. There are likes of trash in the entrance of the kitchen!

I. The room, DO check the heater and clean the air filter by yourself (might not have been done for 3 years).
