Cosy conducive environment with a vey knowledgeable elderly gentleman by the name of Fukutomi-san. He will provide advice with his “google “ maps to choiced places of interest- it is guest’s responsibility to check his understanding and direction.
Cons: no cooking and no private bathroom 

Conducive environment to chill and relax

We arrived at 3pm after driving in the rain for hours. We hoped to relax in this hotel, but the owners sent us away with the comment : we are closed till 5 for our own time". They could have easily let us stay in their 2 common areas. This is more of a backpackers in the 70's style.  Do not expect luxury as I see now on the review page (cheating ?). Owner does not correct noisy guests. I woke up to tell the guest to mind other early sleepers. 
It is overpriced for what you get.

We had a great time here. The owner was very friendly and we really appreciated his recommendations for the area. Also the shower includes a beautiful bath area :))) highly recommend. It’s not the most spacious accommodation but it’s worth it...

Lovely quaint place

I usually prefer to stay in hotels close to public transportation but I was out touring Mount Aso and around Kumamoto so I needed a central location for one night. Sanrinsha is quite cozy and pretty much out in the sticks. I don't know how you would get there easily by public transport. For those driving or biking, it's a convenient location to explore Aso and Takachiho.

I can't say too much about it as I was asleep quickly for the one night I was there and out the door at sunrise. The owner is very helpful and quite nice with a good sense of humour, He speaks some English but if you speak some Japanese, of course you will communicate more smoothly. 

The bath is awesome. A home hot spring with two showers inside. Everything is clean and there were no bugs in sight. The room I was in had single beds so it might be small if you are used to sleeping on semi-doubles or larger beds. I kicked the wall a few times turning over. The room has air conditioning so don't worry about the heat. There's free wi-fi, so you can stay in touch.

The only disappointment I guess, was that the toilets were not in the rooms but on the first floor. For the price you pay, you would expect to have more privacy in that case. It however, added to the feeling that you were in a house and not a hotel. There were few people when I was there, so no rush on the bathroom or bath. I wonder what it would be like though with a full house. There are some house rules written all over on chalk boards, on the walls, etc. Please read them as they will probably answer most of your questions. I think only cash is accepted so bring cash along not a credit card.

Around the pension, you can find a few restaurants, a supermarket (about 3km away) and a laundromat. If you're on foot, things will be a bit more difficult but not impossible.

cozy home-feel

The whole place feels like grandpas cabin, cozy, warm and inviting. It's also a bit rustic, a japanese-style shower/hot-tub, shared amenities and no food is available, so make sure you're okay with all of that in advance. There's not much nearby either, so plan in advance, but it was a great out of the way, quiet and comfortable place for us. The host is great as well, a very friendly couple with extensive knowledge and materials for the whole area.

Great place for an authentic stay

The host offered to pick us our bags at the station as we had no car and the guesthouse is quite far from the center. When we arrived in Takamori, he was waiting for us there with nice handmade maps of the surroundings. So we could enjoy visiting the places he advised and taking a walk back to the guesthouse. Nice scenery on the way, but you have to walk on the side of the road for about half an hour. We felt like special guests here, with nice welcome message and enjoyable onsen in the warm wooden house. As the guesthouse doesn't serve meals and there are only a few restaurants around that close early, we had to walk for 15min to the closest one, but the host offered to pick us up again so we didn't have to walk on the way back. He can't speak good english but still communication was good. Maybe not the best location if you're on foot, the surroundings are probably most suitable to visit by car, otherwise really nice place and host.

Accommodating host and nice place !

Out stay at Pension Sanrinsha was absolutely fantastic. The hard factors: clean, good location, private little onsen, cute rooms, and the common area decorated with all sort of little memories from all over the world.

What REALLY makes this place stand out is the owner, who cannot justly be described even with a thousand words. He's not just extremely helpful and happy, but unites the knowledge of a lifetime with the positivity of a child. It's amazing and inspiring. Also he is very skillful in drawing little personalized maps for his guests which are full of detail.

I would come back ANYTIME. Don't miss out on the experience of staying at Sanrinsha!

Fantastic.

Everything other reviewers report is true.  Satoru-san is a very kind, generous, and attentive host who is genuinely interested in his guests and intent on showing them this beautiful area of Japan.  Learning of our interests, he prepared a complete, detailed itinerary of notable sites with phone numbers to plug into our GPS that enabled us to follow the route with no difficulty.  He spent a good hour with us over coffee giving background information and advice.  Staying at Sanrinsha was a unique experience, one of the main highlights of our three weeks in Japan.  The pension is very clean, beds comfy, rooms not large but just fine.  My wife and I were the only guests for two nights in November, and were entirely comfortable.  In high season, with the pension fully booked, demand for the shared toilet and bath facilities could be an issue for some–perhaps especially older travelers like us.  Meals are not offered at Sanrinsha.  However, Satoru-san sent us to a spectacular centuries-old restaurant down the road that served Aso beef roasted hearthside.  Sanrinsha pension is a great base for exploring the richly scenic Mt. Aso area.
