I would give this a 10.

I booked this traditional japanese room for 2 with shared toilet (we have our own shower - only the the toilet is shared) last minute. It’s a great deal. It’s affordable, close to JR Station (for trolley travellers use the exit with elevator), nearby a temple (when walking outside at dawn, we could hear the gong from the temple), pristine and REALLY spacious room (4 adults of any race can fit the room comfortably - the room is really big, I was so happy I can open all four huge luggages! I wasn’t able to do that at mystays and apa hotel!).

I love the japanese styled room where you can fold the dividers. They also have the traditional japanese table with complete tea set you can use for free!

If you are planning to book this place, do it fast! You won’t regret it. They provide clean towels and robes. Default complimentary toiletries were provided. They also keep luggages for you before and after checkout for free (I read somewhere, some places asks for a fee). There’s wifi too.

Near the JR Station, very clean and spacious!

The Ryokan Kyoka is a traditional Japanese Inn, but not the expensive fancy type that make the news and guidebooks.  As such, the rooms, bath, and toilet are all separate, and there are limited ensuite rooms.  The room I had only had a closet, a bookshelf, a small table with chairs, and a traditional table with cushions on the tatami.  The futon were already laid out when I checked in, but the room was roomy enough (larger than a business hotel room) to easily avoid the bedding.

The entryway was brand new, with two steps up to the left to get to the small front to check-in.  Most rooms were on the second floor, and to help with you or your luggage, a "stair lift" chair is installed.  If you have a heavy suitcase, you can place it in the chair and push a button to get it up or down.  There is no elevator.  You can also ride it yourself although I found just walking to be easier.

The room only had two electrical outlets, one down low and one near the heat pump, which easily warmed the room (January).  There was no television but the wireless was good, connected easily (once you got the long password entered correctly), and was stable.  As in ryokan and minshuku, the living space is the only heated area.  However, the sinks in the toilet/shower area on the second floor had hot water - something not always available in ryokan and minshuku outside the bath (ofuro).  The toilet was divided into a men's and women's side, each with its own shower.  The sink area is shared with 2 sinks.

The ofuro (bath) is on the first floor and seemed to be brand new.  There was a nice washing area and a large comfortable tub to soak in.  As it was winter, I used the ofuro only and didn't use a second floor shower.  I think I was the only guest who used the bath while I was there.

I mainly saw only the elderly woman who ran the place who gave me information on the doors, the hours, etc. but only in Japanese.  I'm not sure if they can communicate in English, but she was most helpful in Japanese.  I only saw another person when I left, who thanked me in polite Japanese for being a guest.

The location is excellent.  If you head straight north out of Kyoto Station, cross over to the right side of the road that goes past the Tower Hotel toward Higashi Honganji Temple, across one intersection that has the Station Hotel nearly on the corner, and take the first right as the road bends to the right, you'll be on the road that the Kyoka is on.  There are several Buddhist shops on both sides of the road, you can see a big "Ryokan Daiwa" sign on the left and a barber pole on the right.  The Kyoka is across from the barbershop on the far side of the other ryokan.  You'll also pass a Family Mart on the left just before the ryokan but it's set back a bit and you don't see it from the main street intersection.

100 meters from the ryokan is the Shosei-en Gardens, an outlier of the Higashi Honganji.  If the crowds of the main tourist sites and Kyoto Station get to you, this is a quiet respite from the noise of the city.

If you want a Japanese style experience that isn't the full kaiseki-in-room ryokan for Y30,000 per person per night, this is a nice little place.  I used to stay in places like this all the time but I've digressed in recent years to business hotels.  If I'm back in Kyoto again, I'll look into staying here again.

Mix of old an new with a good location

We had a great stay at this Ryokan. The location is fantastic, very close to the station and we walked to many attractions from there. So many temples, places to eat and see around. The ryokan is simple , but clean and comfortable.  We had a room with a private shower, had to use the common toilet, which was fine. We had a traditional room, and for two people it was plenty of space. There was a little room with a low table and pillows and through the sliding doors there was the bedroom and shower. The bedding was soft,  the rooms were exceptionally clean and there was an AC! They left us beautiful robes to wear while there too. The room got nice and dark at night so we had a very comfy sleep. This is not a 5 star hotel, it is a simple family run Inn kind of place, so as long as you aren't expecting luxury, this place would do the trick on a budget. We would definitely stay there again. 

Simple but very comfortable 

We had the Japanese style room with bathtoom.
The room was very  clean with traditional futon bedding on the floor.
Fecilities for making green tea, small TV and bath/shower.
Staff were Freindly and helpful with enough English to get by.
Good location near the Kyoto train station.
Laundry on 2nd floor: wash 300 Yen, dry 100 Yen per 30 mins.

Very nice hotel.

I would give a 5 star to this place, because I think it is worth for a 5 either, however, for my personal taste it is a 4.
Staff is very and nice helpful, some of them speak English too.
The room we got was just next to the Japanese style garden with a small pond. It really has the feeling of an old ryokan, but the room is very clean. The shower is medium clean, but ok. 
For me it was a bit too dark somehow and the gurgle at the pond gave a noise like as it would constantly raining outside.
Location is perfect, and WIFI worked well.
