This ryokan provided excellent vibe for us - a family with a 2 years old kid. We shared lovely moment in a wooden Japanese-style room named Moegi near the reception which contains a private indoor hot spring bathtub and separated washroom facility. My worry of the noise from the corridor and reception was proven unnecessary as we stayed. 

The hot spring here is weak alkaline, not as irritative as sulphuric hot spring so our little kid could share excellent hot spring experience with us in bathtub inside our room.

The room is excellent with 12 tatami in the living room together with a balcony that enable us to appreciate the riverside in the room. At night, housekeeper prepared futons for us to sleep on tatami. What a wonderful and sweet experience for a family! However, my wife grumbled that the river sound is a bit loud but it should be inevitable for a riverside room!

Dinner and breakfast were prepared with fresh ingredients - fish, seafood and vegetable, and they tasted good. The one-bite Japanese beef is soft and taste excellent!  (You should not expect that they are prepared like a precious artworks in high-end professional ryoutei ^^) T

We also enjoy the outdoor hot spring with splendid river view and nature sounds surroundings. However the passage to the outdoor baths may be harsh for elderly as you may need to walk on a steep rocky staircases. (The 4th floor of ryokan seems having an easier way to outdoor baths but the door was staff-only at that moment…) We enjoy everything here and thank all staffs for their warmest serving.

Regarding the accessibility, we took Hakone mountain trains to Tonosawa station and it took 5 minutes walk from the cement staircases and crossed a short bridge to the ryokan. The journey is manageable in a sunny day even we carried a baby trolley and backpacks.

An excellent ryokan experience

Our first time staying in a ryokan, so I  had no real idea what to expect. We were to be served a meal upon arrival, but were massively late to get there taking the Shinkansen from Kyoto, just on the cusp of them stopping to serve dinner altogether but luckily they still accommodated us. Being vegan meant we specified this meal request when booking, and it didn't disappoint. Many unique and delicious dishes in our meal, was a great way to be welcomed to the ryokan.

Later I made use of the onsen, but since it was super hot weather already this was probably more enjoyable if we had gone in the winter. Oh well, relaxing nonetheless.

I slept soundly (my wife complained that the room smells of wood, which kind of kept her up, I didn't notice this at all, or if I did I enjoyed it), woke up to a beautiful misty morning, and went for a run along the hilly twisty roads of Hakone. We left to Tokyo a little while after.

This is a perfect getaway for those looking to escape the bustle of the big cities, or as stop in between cities.

Amazing authentic experience

What a great experience at a traditional ryokan!  Breakfast and supper were included with our stay, as well as afternoon tea service.  The food was delicious and we were able to try a lot of different dishes we would not have otherwise experienced.  Ichino explained all of the dishes and everything about the ryokan and our room.  We enjoyed the onsens and the quiet of the inn.  So much care and attention to detail was given to everything! It is about a 10 minute walk from the train station.  Be sure to visit the shops and try the tiramisu ice cream. 

Once in a lifetime experience

My wife and I stayed at the ryokan as part of our tour of Japan. Having experienced ultra modern hotels in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto, we were keen to sample a traditional Japanese inn. 

We had a suite of rooms with a private onsen and rockery type garden, which was lovely. Despite being very old (I understand the current building is 100 years old), the suite had modern facilities such as air conditioning, a washlet toilet, sink and shower (as part of the onsen). It also had a mini bar. A drinks list is provided with dinner and the prices seemed reasonable.

The set-up is very traditional and in stark contrast to the modern hotels, the staff did not speak much English. They do not help with luggage forwarding (the other hotels were very helpful with Yamato paperwork!) Therefore if you are staying here for a night or two as part of a tour, consider taking an overnight bag and forward your luggage from the hotel you are at beforehand to the hotel you’ll ultimately be staying at, or make sure you book Shinkansen seats with luggage space. We had to take a trip back to Odawara station where a helpful JR rep changed our seat bookings for the onward trip, but this took up time we could have spent exploring the area. 

The downsides are the hotel is old and feels old (a somewhat musty smell pervaded the place). We saw no other guests and it was very quiet. The meal arrangements are quite strict- dinners and breakfasts are served at the prescribed times on the dot but the tea arrived a few minutes early so make sure you are up and dressed in good time. We were attended by a very pleasant and hard working young lady throughout. 

The dinners were very elaborate and of good quality (the best miso soup we tasted during our trip). If you are used to a bowl of muesli, slice of toast or a croissant for breakfast, the large Japanese breakfast will come as a shock. Being full from the previous night’s dinners, we were unable to finish them, and some dishes were just a bit too adventurous for 8 in the morning. 

On the whole, a good experience for a night or two. 

Traditional Japan

KANSUIRO ANNEX is a relaxing place with an upscale feeling to it. Everything felt welcoming and beautiful. A minor drawback is that it was a bit of a walk from the annex to the main building where all the onsens are located. Furthermore, it was confusing to keep track of which onsens had showers and which required you to shower in your room first. The atmosphere of the Annex’s outdoor spring was great.  This would make a great spot for a weekend getaway and I would like to come back someday!

A bit more research would have made it perfect

We stayed in the Annex part of the Ryokan and can hardly say enough good things about our experience. The room (101 in the Kansuiro Annex) was fantastic with a great layout and furniture. It felt like a great mix of Japanese and Scandinavian design. The rotemburo onsen baths were great with one overlooking the river. The staff were incredibly hospitable. 

BUT - the room we stayed in was just next to the road, which is a major thoroughfare and the traffic noise is a major detractor. I'd say that I would give the whole experience six stars and then have to take two away from the traffic noise. I am a light sleeper and was tossing and turning. My partner is a relatively deep sleeper but was also kept awake.

On the whole, I probably would still recommend staying there, but try and see if you can stay in a room facing away from the road.

Perfection vs. Traffic

We stayed 3 nights in Ajisai room, with private onsen.
Exceptional traditional ryokan experience, this place is very historical with more than 400 years history, breathtaking with the building, atmosphere and surroundings. 
From the moment we arrived, they well look after us with thoughts, polite and friendly. During the stay, we had not one day having the same food, provided breakfast and dinner, the meals were served in our room, so fresh and delicious and high quality.
Our room Ajisai was located in the ground floor, beautiful garden view outside and very quiet and peaceful.
We enjoyed the in room onsen and we also visited both outdoor onsen - few minutes walk from our room, during the day outdoor onsen are only restricted one for male and one for female, from 10pm onwards, couples can use privately, and they both very beautiful with view. 
Every morning we walk around the place, river on the side and it's just so peaceful. 
Hint: spend time in Kansuiro, walk the whole place, there are alot of antique treasure display, have a drink in their old bar, only open for several hours and closed at 4pm.
We will definitely be back and will stay longer, it's one of the best authentic ryokan we experienced.

Exceptional traditional ryokan in Hakone

Had the most amazing stay at Kansuiro Ryokan....only wish we had stayed for longer!

Location: We stayed here for one night on our way from Tokyo to Kyoto. Getting there was very east, taking the Shinkansen then local bus.

The Food: The dinner, served in our room, was one of the best I have ever had! I am a vegan, and they were so helpful in catering to my dietary restrictions. I would just let them know when you book. Breakfast was very good as well. 

The Room:  Our room was BEAUTIFUL, with a view over the river. Our bathroom had a wooden hot-tub of sorts...honestly, we would have been happy if that were the only spa. More on those later...The mattresses were very comfortable and it was hard to transition to sleeping in a Western-style bed at our hostel in Kyoto afterward.

The Spas: There were three spa locations we could use - shared indoor, private indoor, and shared outdoor. All were wonderful and we had a lot of fun making the rounds. It was off season when we went in mid-February, so I had all of the shared spas to myself. 

All in all, would highly recommend Kansuiro! We loved going in February, as the weather was great and we got to see all of the blossoms minus the crowds.



Stay at Kansuiro Ryokan

Standing by the river and surrounded by the woods, the hundred year old building itself is a treasure! It might as well be called a museum. (whether living in a museum is a good thing is up to debate) And the outdoor onsen is pure enjoyment. 
Room is standard Japanese ryokan style and we had a corner room called suiren which has great view of the river and the surroundings and we totally loved it. 
On top of the outdoor bath, there is also an interesting indoor bath. 
Food is standard Japanese meals -- served in your room, nicely presented and tasty. They changed courses during our stay and everyday we had different dinner and we really appreciate that. 
There is a great little bar called bar manga that absolutely has the 1900's feel. We had a wonderful time there.
Staff are caring and have the omotenashi spirit.
In terms of the onsen, food or room, there might be better choices but the rich history and beautiful surrounding definitely make the stay memorable. And of course, always the most memorable are the lovely people here. 

Beautiful and charming

Spent Christmas Day here. Lovely and authentic ryokan with private onsen which was important to us. Stayed here with my wife and two adult sons. Had a great relaxing time. It is not cheap but worth the experience. Stayed in the Momiji room.
