The quintessential Japanese ryokan!  Great location near Beppu Tower and the water, comfortable room, delicious and hearty breakfasts, and great onsen!  The staff was knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly; Kenji especially was fluent in English and helped us greatly in locating restaurants for dinner (and a wonderful cafe for coffee and snacks one day!)  Yamada Bessout is about a ten minute walk from the Beppu JR Station and the main food arcade/street, and is just down the street from a coin laundry, so it is very conveniently located.  Highly recommended.

Best Place to Stay in Beppu!

I personally loved it here and actually stayed one night longer than I intended.
Service: so kind and homely. The staff are smiling and eager to help you with anything.  The breakfast is very very nice and totally worth the 1000yen. I planned a hike one morning and so asked for a Bento breakfast which they made for me. It was also delicious.  Building: is quite old, so yes, the floor creaks and makes noise. The walls are thin, so yes, noise carries. I think it adds to the charm of the place. I will admit that the toilets are a little awkwardly set up outside the rooms and probably not so sound insulated, but I was one of the only customers during my stay so that didn't really matter to me.
Onsen: there are two- an open air onsen that you can reserve for private use during its open hours (which is most of the day) and an inside one which I think is open all the time. The towels have a lovely smell to them and I really really loved the outdoor bath. It must be incredible to be there as a couple or as a family
Overall: I highly recommend it! If you want something with luxury or great privacy don't come here. If you want an authentic Japanese old style ryokan, then definitely check it out.

Seriously worth it

This was a fabulous Ryoken style accommodation with amazing and helpful staff and very comfortable rooms throughout. The onsen facilities were immaculate and the rotonburi was fabulous. A pleasant walk from the train station and close to all amenities. Beppu is a lovely place to visit and this is the only place to stay!

Beppu was a real highlight of our visit to Japan and the staff of Yamada Bessou were wonderful.

Lovely old-fashioned ryokan on a quiet street, surrounded by a small garden. We stayed in the largest room, which is stunning and has its own windowed seating area and toilet area. Other rooms have shared toilets. The large outdoor private bath, which can be shared by more than person, is gorgeous and can be reserved in advance in 30-minute slots. The indoor baths, separated for men and women, are simple but also very pleasant and clean and can be used any time. We were a group of six, and used the baths several times a day.

Breakfast is served in a large communal room, and is delicious Japanese fare.

We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely return.

Very friendly, relaxed oasis of calm

The hotel is an old charming family house and is runned by a very friendly lady and delightful staff. Japanese rooms are nice (some are with private toilets and bathroom). The indoor onsen is pleasant and the outdoor onsen is very beautiful. Nothing to fault and a truly nice place to stay in Beppu close to Beppu station in a very quiet residential area (5/10 mn  walk to many restaurants)

Very charming and nice place

On one level it reminds me of ‘cabanes’ in the alps, even though it is by the sea, and (in August, just before a storm) it is pretty warm and humid. But the ‘feel’ is there, and by that I mean the friendly comradeship, the good but unfussy food, the ‘just right’ feel of being a welcome guest in a friendly and beautiful house. There is no price or stars you can put on that. The rooms are traditional and comfortable, the only drawback being having to traipse out of your room if you want to go to the shared loo, which is ok but not my favourite situation. The breakfast is very good value, not too fussy and very tasty.

Delightful and (to a westerner) exotic

In order for a ryokan to fulfill its purpose, three things must be in place: the atmosphere, the atmosphere and the atmosphere. ☺️
All three factors are top notch. Yamada Bessou is an oasis of calm in Beppu, which is otherwise a somewhat messy town. On the creaking wooden floors that lead to the rooms of this old, atmospheric house, you are in a completely different peaceful universe, the staff are absolutely gracious, welcoming and helpful, and the breakfast is excellent. Their outdoor onsen bath is also very beautifully landscaped. The shared toilets are just a reality one quickly adjusts to.

Atmosphere 

I love staying in real houses, beautiful old houses with a history, not a concrete huge building, run by a company. Yamada Bessou is such a house, with a history, family owned, and cared for by that family.  
Check in in Japan is usually very strict : 15h00, not sooner and not too much after that either.  So it was a pleasant surprise that, when we went to the ryokan  earlier in order to ask if they were willing to keep our luggage, the owner spontaneously offered an early check in.  This made that we could still visit the famous Beppu Hells at leisure.  We had a large room upstairs, with private toilet. And we booked the rotenburo (outside onsen) for next morning.  The outside area is recently renovated with care for the old tree and interesting inflow of the water.  The breakfast was excellent and it was a joy to see that there were several groups of young Japanese visitors sharing the premises.  Eager to experience the life of their forebears. I heartily recommend this place.

Tradition and very warm welcome

I was staying there solo when I went to visit a friend from a college.

Owner was friendly and caring. It’s bit old fashioned ryokan but it was very comfortable to stay. There are two kinds of Onsens available; one for different sex and the other was outside. 

It’s free to use the outside hot spring by reserving in advance. 

Friendly inn with open Onsen 

Very traditonal japanese. Room is clean. Onsen is very nice especially outdoor onsen.
Host and staff very friendly. Good location near trainstation where you can take a bus tour for Hell of Beppu. Breakfast is also delicious.
