Ryokan Asono Yamaboushi

Very beautiful family runs ryokan. The place is clean in every inches. The owners are very kind and friendly. Foods are simple but amazing spectacular and delicious!,farm to table concept. There are private onsen the room both indoor and outdoor. There are only 3 private villas so very peaceful and relaxing. The place so well decorated with lots of memories and details. Also a nice walk along the rice fields and only a few minutes walk to see a view of Aso.

We deliberately hired a car to drive out to Aso just to stay at this hotel for one night back in April and it was a truly magical experience.

Their website advertised the properties as "kominka" which means traditional Japanese housing - though our little bungalow's toilet is perhaps the most recent model I've seen in Japan (opens up to greet you, warmed seat which was great cos it was bloody cold).

It's a family run hotel, felt a bit like Japanese B&B. The mother and son team was really warm and attentive, embracing us like family. They spoke limited English but my partner speaks Japanese so there was no trouble for us.

We stayed at one of the smaller properties called "Hiraya" instead of the larger "Kura" with two storeys. While it's a bit on the pricey side at around AUD$200 per person, the fact that it included two scrumptious meals made it worthwhile for us.

We were served dinner and breakfast the next morning, and both meals were huge with at least 12-15 small tapas like dishes. Dinner was especially spectacular, it was Japanese fine dining - complete with amuse bouche and beautifully marbled Wagyu grilled in front of you on the traditional irori hearth.

The room was clean and smelled lovely of tatami. The only complaint we had of the place is that the futons were a bit thin on the mattress side so the bedding was a tad hard for us. But we like our beds soft so maybe theirs are normal for most people.

The bathroom has a open shower and an indoor onsen tub which was just fantastic. And the little outdoor onsen was just absolutely magical. It fits only one (or two if you're on the small side) but it was wood fire heated from the bottom so we were told to throw this round wooden plank into the water and sit on it while we soaked to make sure we don't burn our bums! It was entirely too much fun and we spent a lot of them soaking to our hearts content. 

It was a wonderful stay and we would definitely visit again when we go to Japan next time.
