Located deep inside of the park accessed only by jeep along very rough roads for about an hour & a half. 

The land is privately owned & is mainly cardamon plantation. It really should not be here in the park. The Government wants the land back so it’s all national park. It’s being fought through the Supreme Court on how much compensation. 

The accommodation is very basic with only three main guest rooms. No aircon, no ceiling fans, no mobile reception. Built of dark timbers & stone the rooms are on the first floor up a steep set of stairs off a veranda overlooking the forest. There is a large, hard bed, cupboards and a basic on-suite bathroom. 

Meals are all included. They are cooked on a wooden stove by Mary the cook & is basic Indian fare but tasty and too much of it!

It’s all about nature so a stay includes a couple of walks through the forest & an evening bone shaking jeep safari. As the forest is thick it is unlikely to see any large animals. Plenty of birds & monkeys. And plenty of mosquitoes!!!

There is a natural flowing rock pool close by where you can swim if you want. 

The grounds & views are lovely but for me two nights was enough. It’s an interesting experience but I miss my creature comforts!!

Rustic & Simple

Staying at this untouched, unpolluted  place is holidaying  this day last century in a cosy cottage classically built right inside a deep jungle.You can only marvel  at the interior while  visiting  a mansion or museum of past glory but here  you live it- surprisingly, you envy the simple but better quality-life of the gone era.
 The bungalow would beat  any place  of past splendour hands down, considering, it is right inside the core of one of the most protected  wild life sanctuaries where humans can not mess with wildlife .Taking  special care to preserve nature for generations, the family owning the property, is zealously guarding the jungle to conserve  wild life. So expect  only the essential basic comforts of today's world here!  
You may have visited the most exotic places on earth- I have not, but I am sure you will love this place if you really want to experience the tasteful  life style of your ancestors had they been  nature lovers owning  a beautiful place  inside the wildest Periyar Forest- the pride and crown jewel of  God's own country.
The staff here don't belong to today's  tourism world of feigned hospitality and trained courtesy.They are sincere simple caring folks  who don't treat us as just guests! We feel we arrived to make  life happy and meaningful for them!
Brave-heart Kuttan, Mary, Mariadas, The Bhograjs, Manu(Rithu DMC),take care of you and the lovely jungle and the exotic wild life around you!

Kuttan & Mary- the two hearts make this place beat. 

Awesome homemade, fire wood cooked meals. Night safari along slippery, winding roads with near zero visibility on a 1985 nut and bolts Mahindra 4X4 which has the heart of a Bengal Tiger. 

Rooms are spacious, cosy and clean. The bathroom- hmmm- space, is all that there is to it.Fixtures are poor- a lot could be done in this department. But hey, this place is no five star- we came came here to have fun and soak up on nature- that there is plenty.

 We rode up on vintage british motorcycles - Enfield & Triumph Bonnieville. The bikes took a severe beating, but they held up, riding along stony brooks, slippery mountain tracks- recommended motorcycle however though, would be an all terrain bike - Triumph Tiger or similar. 

We loved the night Safari and the amazing dip and swim in the mini waterfall below the bungalow.

During rainy season Leeches are plenty and will surely find you. We got bitten several times. Kuttan has a home remedy to resolve the issue. Worry not.

Basic. Bare bones. Blissful. Adventurous.

No mobile, no wife, villagers sitting on a spot with mobiles kept on a stick , will make you wonder if you are back in time. But do detox from this materialistic world this is the perfect place. Off Vandiperiyar and inside the Periyar reserve forest, it is a place of utmost beauty. The drive up to the bungalow can be a lot of fun, i.e 4x4 fun. But once you are there the rooms are old world style with wooden flooring and clean bathrooms etc. The caretaker and the staff go out of the way to make you feel at home. Food is home cooked and they can cook to your taste. At night just the sound of birds and the call of wild animals to keep you company. As though the ride to get here is not enough, they will take you on a night safari through the estates. That is another great experience and you will usually end up spotting some animals.

If you want to get away from it all.... this is it.

Those who want to spend a night right in the middle of the forest this is the apt place for you. You can hear  the babbling sound of brook and cicadas and can go out for day and night safari  and can watch Elephants, Bison, Porcupine, Black Monkeys, Wild Pigs,...  The hospitality of the staff is excellent.  Highly recommend this resort.

Periyar Reserve Bungalow

This location is probably the one of the most remote places we have ever stayed in and it was bliss. We were met at the gate by the very cheerful estate manager and transferred by jeep deep into the cardamom plantation. Our room was quirky but very comfortable. The shower didn't work but we had the best bucket and jug bath ever with hot water brought up by Mary our excellent cook. The walks and jeep safaris into the forest were fascinating and we saw a variety of animals including the giant squirrels, crested eagle and the very rare lion tailed macaque.

No wifi, no signal, absolute bliss.

We arrived at the gates of the Reserve to be met by three men in a Jeep. After we were signed in our taxi followed them for about three miles of narrow road to a little village where we, our driver and all our baggage , transferred to a Jeep. After two miles of rough track we arrived at the Reserve Bungalow, an ECO lodge built up on the side of a valley. We had basic, but comfortable, accommodation  with hot running water in the bathroom with which we dowsed ourselves then had our first very good meal provided by the resident cook and his assistant.we had two jeep safaris on very rough roads with guides and driver through the cardamon plantation to a small lake to do some fishing. At night another safari with searchlight eventually saw a spotted deer but no tigers.The guides were as enthusiastic and disappointed as we were.
ALL lights were switched off and we stopped to "stargaze"! Magical as was the view from the first floor viewing area of the bungalow. Another good Tandoori meal served by the ever smiling staff and a good night's asleep after very rough and bumpy safaris. WE were in the jungle without tele, phones or internet. Peaceful bliss with no sounds but the animals.True natural living!
