We did the Acatenango Hike with wicho & charlie's and were very pleased by their service. The guides Osvin, Jorge and Henry were amazing. They took care of the group very well, spoke English, were funny, informative and made us feel safe the whole time. 

The hike was challenging but the agency provides everything you need for free and extras for a small fee. We recommend renting the trekking poles, they helped us a lot, especially when you only wear sneakers and no hiking boots like us. A plus of wicho&Charlie's is that you can sleep in little cabins in the basecamp  and not tents like the other agencies. They are very simple and small but enough for one night and most likely keep you warmer than tents. Considering the environment it would be difficult to provide anything better.

All in all, an unforgettable experience that you don't want to miss when visiting Guatemala. We would definitely choose wicho&Charlie's again.

Acatenango Hike with wicho&charlie's

We had an awesome tour with this group. We were nervous about how difficult it was and it ended up being extremely pleasant. 

We were fortunate enough to have an awesome group and made many friends. 

Our guides, Ronald, Willie, and George were also amazing. Very friendly and helpful. We hired people to carry our bags and that was a life saver. We carried our bags down though. 

The hike to base camp took about 4.5 hours. It was hard but very manageable. The hike the next morning to the summit was brutal but glad we did it. 

The food provided was simple but tasty. And we stayed warm in their shelters. 

We had really great weather too!

Fueling Volcano Hike

Amazing trip up Acatenango AND Fuego! The whole operation was smoothly run, you can tell these folks do it all the time and do it well. They warned us that is was going to be really cold so we packed well and their rental gear was good. Highly recommend renting walking sticks. I'm use to hiking during the day on difficult hikes but because this is a difficult hike and you will need to carry your gear and 4L of water, the sticks were so helpful in getting up the volcano. The hike to fuego was absolutely worth it to see the volcano up close. Try to wait until dark when you have the best views of the lava. The tour Co's base camp was good, the area itself was spacious and dinner was delicious. Our guide Willy was really great, he hiked at a good pace and had well timed breaks. Again his guidance and warnings of the level of difficulty along the hike and the climate was so helpful to prepare the hikes. The amount of food and water given was sufficient for me, however, some hikers said that they could use more water. Overall, best part of our 2 week trip in Guatemala!

Amazing volcano hikes, well prepared trip thanks to Wicho and Charlie!

We did the Acatenango tour with Wicho and Charlie's and we are glad we chose them. They were a professional outfit who ran a tight ship. There were so many things to like about their experience. They served a nice breakfast at check in, they provided jackets, headlights, scarves, hiking shoes, and gloves as included in the tour and provided a good vegetarian lunch, dinner, breakfast and snacks. For an extra cost you can hire poles and whilst we didn't do that we observed that they made a massive difference in the ease of hiking up and down the volcano. You need to bring your own batteries for the headlights, however you could get lucky with batteries that were still working with previous tours. You also have to bring a litre of your own water to be used for the cooking. They provide 3 litres for the trip. 
We had a large group of around 30 people and whilst we are both fit for our mid 30s, most of our group felt like they were running up the mountain. Thankfully we had one of the guides with us for most of the way. They allocate 1 guide for every 6 people, which is a good ratio and they make sure that no one gets left behind. They have great permanent base camp on the volcano, split over 3 levels and it appeared to be the highest vantage point relative to other outfits. After arriving at Basecamp, we had an hour to recover and then we were given the option to stay put, continue to the summit for sunset (another 1.5hrs return) or venture on onto Fuego itself for another 200Q (around 3.5hrs return). We were shattered but still went to see sunset and that was great. Mind you that was the steepest and hardest part of the journey! The accommodation was great. They had cabins that fit 6 people and had really comfortable matresses, pillows and bedding. Unfortunately we didn't get much sleep, most likely due to the altitude. In hindsight we should have just sat outside watching the volcano all night. They have seats around a campfire, which is a nice place to hang out.
If you are planning to do this tour, make sure you spend at least two days in Antigua acclimatizing first. We had 3 people in our tour who were throwing up all night from altitude sickness because they hadn't done this. We went to lake Atitlan first for a couple of days and we were fine. This hike was the toughest thing we had ever done and we are so glad we did it with Wicho and Charlie's Tours. 


Well Oiled Machine

This was an unforgettable experience! I read a lot of reviews before I decided to do this and was expecting to have extreme difficulty. I am 49 years old and am in ok shape...  I do some stair climbing at the gym which I believe is why I did well. I went to base camp and was satisfied at that point. I did not take the trip to the summit as I was too tired and content at base. But, many people did go to the summit or to Fuego!!  I believe if I workout more and get stronger I will go back and go to the summit.

I did hire a porter to carry my backpack because with the water it was too heavy. Also, the trekking poles are a must! I did not get sick or a headache like some but I didn’t have an appetite. I don’t know if it was the altitude or if it was just exhaustion. But being unable to eat meant I didn’t have energy to go to the summit. 

Alex was my porter and he was really great! He carried my heavy pack like it was nothing!  Several people paid porters to carry their backpacks. But many people were strong and experienced enough to carry their own backpacks. 

All the guides were very kind and patient for everyone. I would like to add that even though I did not go to the summit I was the first person to make it to base camp. I mention that because I really didn’t think I could do it and I did. I’m very happy with this experience and writing this review you must know that I am very sore lol 🤪🤩

Acatenango Volcano two day tour

Just wow! After researching we decided to go with W&C and we definitely made the right choice! The value is just really good! They provide Breakfast before the hike, lunch and snacks, dinner and breakfast the next morning. For us it was more than enough but we did bring some nuts and muesli bars to be on the safe side. We didn't use a lot of rental equipment (we had warm stuff- which you definitely need!!), only gloves(don't think about it, take them!) and a headlamp and waterbottles, as you have to carry 4L (1 to share for cooking) and that was perfectly fine. The Basecamp was nice, a little fireplace, little huts where the wind can't get in. Warm sleeping bags and blankets. Didn't get cold during the night. The Guides (especially René!!!) where fantastic, nice and helpful. Without Rene I would have had a much harder time getting up there. And as for the hike, well it is tough, probably the hardest thing I've ever done but, the view is totally worth it!!! Seeing the Towns at night, or while walking up during the day, seeing Fuego erupt, just amazing. Not something you see everyday! Took us about 5 hrs to get to Basecamp (the slow walkers) and then after an hour rest another hour and a half to the summit (again, slow walkers cause it is so damn hard to get up there!). Walking down the next morning took about 2,5 hrs. It was a really nice experience and I am glad we did it and booked with W&C!

Acatenango Hike

After walking around Antigua with the hopes of finding the best deal, we came across this company that was recommended by a friend. We decided to head to their location to get a better understanding of what the 2 day hike to Acatenango consisted of and what we should expect. Upon arrival,  the two guys working there explained everything to us in a very detailed and exciting manner, so we said YES and arrived the next morning for our departure. The breakfast was EXCELLENT. Everyone working there was as excited as we were and smiling every minute (even though it was 7:30 am). We got to choose our gear and they offered extra water bottles in case anyone needed more. We were handed our food for the trip, which consisted of 100% vegetarian meals and or vegan if requested. When we arrived to the starting point, a few young guides greeted us. Now let me just say, don't be fooled by their age, these guys know what they're doing and they were so patient with everyone. Especially me, one of the slowest ones of the group. The hike was difficult but totally worth it. It rained and I did not take the poncho that was offered. Take it, it gets very cold at the campsite and being wet doesn't help. We made multiple stops that were very helpful throughout our journey and we had lunch before arriving. A few hours after we arrived to our campsite, we had hot warm chocolate that was delicious and later on we had a delicious dinner with wine. Watching the volcano erupt is an experience like no other and I totally recommend it. If you are planning on doing this hike, please consider this company. As they don't only provide an excellent service and experience, but they also provide an opportunity for local people like these awesome guides. They even teach them english!! Best experience EVER!

Wow what an amazing experience.it was mine and Hannahs first hike and wow was it though but was well worth it when we got to the top and seen the volcano exploding.

Only thing to flaut is they could do with a compost toilet as it was one with nature.which some people don't mind .
But over all couldn't recommend wicho and Charlie's more fantastic people

Mentally and physically drained

Loved my trek up the volcano with Wicho & Charlie. The guides were really kind and knowledgable and managed to keep all the group happy with varying abilities. The beds were really comfy and warm. All the food was great and kept us going throughout the day - especially the wine and marshmallows! The conditions at the summit were really poor, so the guides advised we didn’t make the journey which I think was the right decision, as we still got to see the volcano erupting from base camp which was amazing!

Amazing experience!

Best thing I have ever done. It was a really tough hike but the guides and all the food and equipment was excellent. Loved roasting marshmallows on the camp fire watching the volcano erupt. 10/10 would recommend!
