The room was spacious, the price was great, and the people are fantastic. The location is just over the river and our balcony was positioned immediately over it with a wonderful view. We are especially grateful for the staff, who not only tolerated the antics of our two-year-old, but went out of their way to make our stay comfortable.

Better than we imagined!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in late October.  Lovely room overlooking the river.  Excellent meals at in house restaurant(including salad bar).  Staff was very accommodating and friendly.  When my wife got sick the owner drove us to the local doctor's office.  Close to train & bus station with free travel throughout area with Konus Card.  Very reasonable rates.  Will definitely stay again next time in Germany!

Great hotel in picturesque Black Forest town

What I loved best about this hotel was my balcony. It was lovely. Tubs of flowers all along it. Overlooking the river. Looking across to the wooded hills and the chalet type houses. I spent a lot of time on my balcony. It's a quirky, oldie worldy  hotel. My room was nice. Well lit. More storage space than a couple would need in my single room. I had a totally unused wardrobe. The bed was comfy for a change. Hotel beds are usually too hard for my hips. I liked the quirky decor of my wardrobe, carpet and umbrella stand. Now for the firs of my gripes. The shower was easy to adjust for temperature. But I never found out how to adjust the jet. Some had glass. But I only had a curtain. No matter how careful I tried to be I always flooded the washroom floor in some measure. Breakfasts were excellent. Although nothing cooked except scrambled eggs one morning. Evening meal. Yes. They were  OK. Nothing wrong with the meals themselves. But my second gripe. No vegetables. I was only at this hotel because my holiday to the Harz mountains was cancelled. But I had a really good holiday at this hotel and if my Harz mountains trip is cancelled again next year I shall go back to the Hotel Hirsch if there's room on the coach. 

Would visit again

Just got back from a five night stay with Shearings at the hotel Hirsch.
beautiful surroundings. The village is very pleasant with good amenities and free travel on public transport simply by applying for a travel pass at the reception desk.
The hotel experience was spoiled mainly by two of the staff who were not very welcoming to the point of rudeness to several of the elderly British guests. Shouting at them unnecessarily instead of explaining patiently what was required.There were German guests staying at the hotel at the time and I witnessed no rude behaviour towards them in fact quite the opposite.
The food was basic continental breakfast and usually a one choice menu in the evening no vegetables were served with the meal. If you were part of the Shearings group you were all served at the same time regardless of whether you had declined the excursion for the day or not.
 I am not a vegetarian but the hotel makes no effort to cater for them.
The inclusive package had a small bar menu.
The last meal on Friday evening was a buffet which was mainly similar food from the weeks menu. Chips and croquettes were served as part of the buffet and when they ran out they were not replenished neither were several other items.
Although many of the guests were British there wasn't many signs in English in the hotel the majority were written in German apart from one in the dining room which was placed near a basket and read Staff Tips.
 Our room was not serviced the same dead fly remained respectfully undisturbed on the rug all week.
The rules on smoking are relaxed in Germany and there are ashtrays in all rooms and in the dining areas of the hotel.

I hope a member of Shearings are reading this review as our Senior citizens and your customers deserve better than this. I suggest you remove this hotel from your preferred list of hospitality suppliers as they do not deserve this privileged position.
I cannot hand on heart recommend this hotel to anyone.

once upon a time in Bad Petersal

We stayed here as part of a Shearings tour.
Positives-the hotel is a typical half timbered Alpine type.The hotel has lots of character.
The bedrooms are very nice with a balcony -ours overlooked the local stream.

Negatives-big negative for dinner.They do not seem to know what vegetarians eat.
The first night we literally got a plate of vegetables with some salad cream on !
It is dumped in front of you on a take or leave it basis.
As reported in other reviews the manager is so rude and unhelpful.A very bad advert for a pleasant hotel.We had an uninspiring pasta on 2 of the other nights.
Shame because the hotel lives up to a 3* rating and the breakfast buffet is very nice.Pity about the unsmiling waitress .
They certainly need to improve the customer service experience.
Another example -at dinner there was a separate salad bar but we were not allowed to touch it.Likewise at breakfast -you were sternly rebuked if you dared to sit at the table on the right hand side.
The waiter in the bar in the evening is excellent -friendly and helpful.

Vegetarians avoid!!

We have just returned from a 5 night break with Leger Holidays,( Christmas markets of the Black Forrest). And what a lovely surprise we had when we arrived at The Hirsch. The rooms were spacious clean and well equipped, the food was simple local dishes cooked to a very good standard although the choice slightly limited, but I didnt hear one complaint. Bar prices were good with a nice bottle of red wine costing 14.50 euro and Beer 3.50 euro. But the hotels best asset is its staff, Angel the manager and his crew cater for your every need, nothing is to much trouble and done with a smile.  Thank you Angel for making our stay so special.

What a lovely hotel

We were on our annual European motorcycle trip this year and called in at the Hotel Hirsch at short notice for some food. It is an excellent restaurant, the food is simply fantastic and the staff are brilliant. We will be booking a stay there for next years trip based on our restaurant experience, top class! 

Fantastic food

This hotel is clean tidy and the food is lovely the young waitress was lovely our room was good very roomy the only thing wrong with this hotel is the manager in charge he goes by the name of polly he is such a nasty article shouting and ordering us to go to bed at 9.30pm each evening shouting at 1 guy because he thought he had lost is key that he wanted 50 euros off him shouted at our friend to either get outside and make sure she had her key as he was locking the door or to get to her room to finish her drink and it was only 9.30pm he was a nasty nasty piece of work we won't be going back there x I advise to avoid it like the plaque

Don't stay at this hotel

Stayed at Hotel Hirsch last week on a coach holiday to the Black Forest.  Typical style small hotel, with lots of carved wood everywhere.  Rooms varied in size / facilities.  Ours was smallish, with a large airy bathroom, and we had a bath with shower over.  Other rooms had a seating area, and some had walk in showers instead of baths.  Some had fridges and kettles - ours did not, but it didn't matter.
We found the food to be of good quality and well cooked, although choice was fairly limited.  Some more vegetables and salad would have been good!  The staff, who were mostly Eastern European, worked hard to keep us and the 'paying guests' who mostly dined in the bar area, supplied, although the meal took ages to serve.  The worst meal of the 5 days we were there was what was optimistically called a 'feast', but was, in reality, a buffet.  The food was fine, but it was put out too early, and only kept 'warm' on metal dishes with a single spirit burner under the middle.  Therefore, by the time we got to eat it, it was 'coolish'!! They also had insufficient deserts, which quickly ran out, and had to be replaced with ice cream.
We also had entertainment on that evening, with a  singer with a keyboard, and a bit of dancing.  Was a fun evening, despite the cool food!
The drinks package did not consist of vouchers, but of virtually unlimited beer / wine / soft drinks / tea between 6.30-9.30pm, all of which were fine.  Strangely, we were not allowed coffee in this package, but if you wanted a cup you could buy one for about 2 euros.
The hotel was clean and comfortable, and the young Macedonian waitress, Sanja, worked really hard, serving at the table, and then assisting with the cleaning of the rooms.  She was very friendly and helpful, and certainly helped to make our stay a very pleasant one.

Pleasant 'quirky' hotel in a nice location.

A nice hotel in a lovely area. There is a small store close to the hotel.

The rooms are quaint and some are very spacious. Some have a bath with shower overhead but we had a shower cubicle and no bath and a hairdryer is provided. There is no tea making facilities so bring a kettle if you need a coffee or tea at certain times of the day. There is not many coat hangers if you have plans to stay for a while. We were there five nights.

The food is basic and I suppose that is what we expected when part of a tour group. There is a lot of pork served in different variations but it was well cooked. We also had french fries or potato wedges.

A drinks package was provided for the tour group but the prices of beer and wine were reasonable for others who travel independently, we had a few coffees and wine during the day.

All in all we had a good time, the hotel was clean and the staff were efficient and you won't go hungry.

I would give it 3.5 stars.
