Casa Alianza is great! It's not downtown, but it's in a fairly quiet neighborhood. If you're working in the slums, it's about halfway between the airport and the slums. If you're just in Guayaquil for vacation, you might want to rent a car. Although, it's only $2.50 for a taxi to the mall. The hotel serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, but you need to order it the day before. There's a small pool, great hammocks, and an awesome indoor sports court. There's a nice kitchen for preparing food if you choose to, as well as laundry facilities. It's super secure and safe. The staff are incredibly friendly, and most only speak Spanish. It can be a fun game of charades at times. I would highly recommend it for any backpackers or groups! It's truly a great value! Our group had a super fun time!

Stayed at this property for about 10 nights as I was working with a local fundacion to determine if the US charity I represent would be doing a yearly project together to tend to local poor children.  Casa Alianza was suggested by my local contact as it is close to her home and we could drive to office together.  It is surprisingly nice.  I stayed one night in a room with private bath for $44 and then moved to a room (#22) with shared bath that I preferred.  It was across and down from the kitchen which was really convenient and near the shower, as well.  The bathroom was across the hall from my room, which is basically a large enough room for 1 person, maybe two if you're okay being a little tight for space.  The bed is huge so that's not a problem, but closet space is limited and the only furniture other than wardrobe closet and bed is a night table and a high table I have my laptop on right now as I type this.  No chair when I checked in but I asked for one and they brought it after a while.  Breakfast is $3 and a good bargain for what you get.  The grounds are nice, pool is decent, and they have an indoor multipurpose sport area used for indoor soccer/football and volleyball.  The room is pretty clean and I'm always supplied with soap, shampoo, and towel.  It's comfortable with an efficient air conditioner and ceiling fan.  The reception staff are pretty good.  A taxi to/from the city center should be no more than $5 each way.  One afternoon there was a very hard rain and the courtyard between buildings flooded, carrying a lot of dirt and debris into the hot tub.  The water is still beef barley soup brown several days later.  It's a short walk to a local store, but it's expensive in there.  A 20 minute walk or $2 taxi ride will get you to Rio Center where a major food market and other mall stores are available.  I am very comfortable here, and rate my experience highly when compared to the price.  I was staying in the city at a 4-star for 5 nights or so before coming here, and that rate ranged from $72 to $90 per night.  The value is better here - I'm getting more bang for my buck here.
