This place is a complete scam! We booked a 2 bedroom + 2 bathroom unit that included breakfast for the entire family. When we arrived they claimed that the owner instructed them on giving us a 1 bedroom + 1 bathroom unit and to charge us an additional $10 per breakfast. When we took a look at the unit we noticed that it is old, smelly and very poorly taken care of. We immediately realized that we were being scamed and took off without looking back. Don't waste your money in this hell hole.

Beware of fradulent business! 

This is an expensive hostel, avoid! Our room was basic, with no shampoo or toiletries provided and towels that felt like sandpaper on my back. There was a partition wall made of plywood separating us from the room next door and the wall did not reach the ceiling so every whisper could be heard from the next room. 
A communal kitchen was provided as you would expect in a camping ground which is exactly what this resort is, a camping  ground posing as a resort! 
The fridges and a toaster were covered in rust ( photos attached)
All of the property requires a full renovation and replacement of beds, linen, towels and bathroom appliances. Everything was more or less falling apart.
The breakfast  was not fit for my dog and all of the above for $102 , a complete rip off and even at $30 a night I would not return.
The owners are arrogant and I believe live in Oslo living like royalty from scammed tourists like me and using the location as worth more than the headache the property bestows on all who enter.Avoid!

Avoid this overpriced rip off which offers a doorstep view of the Pacific ocean and nothing else. It is hostel.

San Miguel beach is magnificent. 

However... we paid $180USD for one night at Totobe Resort and felt we'd been cheated. The room was very basic and tired (see photos). No Aircon, no curtains on some of the windows (so we got changed in the dark in the evening), no mosquito net and generally run down and scruffy.

We booked off the back the limited reviews and photos on this TripAdvisor page, and unfortunately despite it being the most expensive place on our three week trip, it represented the worst value by a long way (for the same kind of price, we stayed in relative luxury along the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula). It would have been a reasonable deal if it were a third the price we paid but the fact is a hostel style room should be no more than $80USD. On the upside, the food cooked in the evening was lovely. (Although no alcohol, or soft drink options).

We raised the issue with the owner (who lives in Norway) and the response was "that's what you pay to wake up to the sound of the sea". Actually.. it's not (we discovered it was listed on Airbnb for $70USD). It just needs some TLC and maintenance before hiking the prices.

Very overpriced

I told Connie and Ingo that I would write a review after our visit last Christmas. Well better late than never I guess and I should get this done before I see them next week..... cause it was so great we are heading back! Beach is awesome and having the pool was a nice touch in the evening. There is a rip tide along the beach but it is very obvious where it is and easy to stay away from. The waves are safe to play in with no steep drop off. We could catch a few boogie board waves as well. There are some restaurants within a short drive and a small grocery store so food was no problem.

Connie and Ingo are super outgoing and a blast to spend time with.  They know the area well and were great in providing advice and activities to engage our teenage kids.

Can't wait for another game of coconut bowling!

 This is a beautiful property in an idyllic and remote location. The staff prepared a beautiful breakfast daily. The beach, wildlife and mangroves surrounding the property are stunning. The holiday would not have been the same without the fantastic Connie and Ingo who took us on some fantastic surfing and kayaking experiences and helped us organise some great expeditions. We can’t wait to return.

Amazing!

Beautiful place, clean, awsome location and delicious breakfast ...but few things you may want to know before booking. We stayed 8 days with our 2 4 year old kids. 
1- The owner of the place (Alfredo) is actually living in Norway. He is the one replying to your questions and taking care of the booking, but once you get there, the manager of the place is a Costa Rican woman who does not speak or understand English. The 3 staff (none of the staff understands English) arrives at 6:00am and leaves before noon. If you arrive later for check-ins or need anything after this time, you are on your own (unless....read point no 2);
2- There is this GREAT couple from Canada (Connie and Ingo) who lives on the promises to give surfing lessons and safari tours. They usually arrive at the resort in December and leave early April...but we were extremally lucky that they decided to stay longer this year. The resort would not be what it is without them! They are not staff of the resort and yet, they welcomed us, made sure we were comfortable, instructed us on safe measures to take around the resort, gave us directions to get supplies and guidance of activities to do in the area. They also were our and other guests translaters with the manager. They made our stay safe with the kids. Without them, we would of probably have shorten our stay. On top of that, if they are not at the resort, you cannot take surfing lessons there. I would not return to this location without knowing they are present. This resort gets a pretty good deal having them around!;
3- The rooms are open to the outside which allows you to get fresh air and most times, the ceiling fans helps to keep the mosquitos away BUT not always. There is no net around the bed. On one night, the kids had multiple bites AND if the electricity runs out (happens often) during the night and the ceilings fans are off...you get eaten alive by the bugs. Alfredo should really consider buying high quality nets;
4- There are no lounging chairs at the pool and at the beach. They don't provide beach towels. No toys for the kids at the beach. You need to bring these items. Having lounge chairs would be a very good addition.

Before booking, know this....

Oceanfront location on the beautiful Playa San Miguel.  The resort buildings have a "cabana" feel with a lovely pool and garden area.  Only a few steps to the beach allows easy access for surfing, long beach walks, turtle sightings, whale-watching, and just relaxing.  There is also an estuary nearby to be explored.  The staff are very friendly, helpful and keep the resort very tidy.  Breakfast is awesome---FRESH orange juice, gallo pinto, eggs, fresh fruit and coffee.  YUM!  Highly recommend Totobe resort
