Koh Rong Sanloem

Photos are fake. The pool is empty except for rubbish and right at the back of the rooms is unkempt bush land littered again with rubbish (which also raises security concerns as it looks unsafe). The rooms themselves are sparse and dirty, offering the bare basics at too high a price point (you can find similar quality rooms for cheaper or better quality for the same price) The area itself is virtually dead, there is one restaurant nearby which is tied to the resort and is overpriced and low quality. The owner is extremely rude and will try to cheat you out of every dollar that he can. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Homestay Resort is a tourist trap designed to lure in the unsuspecting (aka me 😂) 

Avoid at all costs!!

We booked for 2 nights and stayed for 2 more! Rooms were immaculate, built to a high standard and very comfortable.
Staff very friendly and conversed fluently in English. Grounds and beaches always clean and rubbish free.
Food very nice and we'll priced, beers were very cold always, although restaurant is clean, appears to be half completed, perhaps work in progress..I expect this is a Khmer family run resort without the deep pockets of some of the German, Chinese or Russian owned resorts.

Very relaxing and friendly

Small, hard-to-find house. Spacious room with bed and bathroom. No hot water. Old restaurant but we didn't eat at the hotel. Nice staff. Very little deal. We paid 65€ a night. Be careful on the island there is no distributor.

Correct

We sat down for a lunch which turned out to be very tasty and fresh made Khmer kitchen. Good alternative to the resorts at the beach of Saracen Bay - Koh Rong Samloen. Very affordable as well and sympathetic staff.

Humble fresh good food

I did not stay here (and thank god for that - you can read others' review for more information). We joined their sunset + plankton boat tour, after asking a few other resorts they all said plankton viewing won't be possible because it's not dark enough. Home Stay Resort said it would be possible, and promised that if there wasn't any they would refund us 25 USD (we paid 40 USD in total for the entire tour). 
The boat took us to somewhere between Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem and docked there to wait for the sunset, that was fine, until after the sun set and the boat started going to a random sea location. The driver (did not understand English) took out a stick and was sloshing the water with it, creating some bubbles. Then he stopped and did NOTHING. We thought we needed to carry out the same task in order to see the plankton but no, absolute utter nothing. And he did not speak a single English word so we had no idea what was going on. After 20mins of sitting in the dark we gestured that we wanted to go back because with no plankton in sight we might as well go back and ask for the refund.
And here's a horrible part. Back on land the staff insisted that we were LYING about seeing no plankton, said that the driver thrust the stick into the water and that was it - that was not. They then moved on to say that we needed to swim to see it, again that was NEVER said before the tour. Finally, the lady (presumably the owner) came out and shouted at us, saying that we were lying (again) and that we should have been grateful that they gave us a discount !!! We finally forfeited our 25 USD and walked back to our resort, when one of their staffs followed and tried to film us. I had to open my phone and film him back, frankly almost as though you were chasing a vampire away. Wow. Unbelievably horrible. 

In a nutshell - don't even think about it. Read the other 25+ horrible reviews on here before you book anything with them.

Do NOT come here - we were scammed

I read some of the previous reviews. And I think they have either improved or my standards are low.... but the bungalow was nice and clean, the bed soft and the air con cold. The only thing is the hot water that takes a while to come but this is normal for most places here on this beautiful island. The manager Ha was super nice and friendly , ready to help with anything that we needed. We went on a night boat ride to see the glowing plankton , not hat we expected but swimming in the ocean at night with a stunning full moon was well worth it. I would stay here again.  

Nice and convinien

Ok bungalows but the bed are rock hard with the thinnest of mattresses. The bathroom door did not have a handle and the shower drains were covered in black hair. 

The outside was nothing like the pictures we saw on Booking.com and the prices were $95 per night (much more than currently quoted) the site was a mix between a building site and a commercial launderette. (see pictures attached).

When we complained and queried the price we were shouted at. We had booked 5 nights but left after the first night.

Best avoided

Since November 2017 (if I understand correctly), the resort offers a little beauty. The bungalows are becoming more modern and no longer look at all like the ones in the straw and bamboo photos. Clean and equipped, the future promises to be better. They even come to pick you up at the port if you call before you arrive. Carriers come to pick up your luggage if the sea is too rough. What I didn't like is that you have to pay more if you want the air conditioning in the room, and the chickens that scream in the morning prevent you from sleeping. The restaurant is not as new as the bungalows but they will certainly do it later.

In the works

We came to the island for only 2 days but we decided to shorten this stay because of this hotel, we arrived: 9:30 room not clean bathroom crap. no electricity until 11am, once the electricity came back again from blackouts during the night and day. Water cut also, night no water in the morning, the staff who tell us not to pay even an hour after arrival. Not nice he stayed behind his food counter and didn't even apologize for the multiple blackouts. During the night of the geckos this walk has bedheads. And mosquito tubs from everywhere.

Not admissible

The +: basic room but ok for the price (mosquito bin, ventilo...); proper restaurant and local food The -: there is no water drainage system so all our wastewater and chemicals are found in nature (shower, laundry...); faucet broken; bungalows invading the beach (as everywhere on this island) In short, you can definitely find better at the same price.
