We arrived hoping to stay for 4 nights but ended up staying 1 and moving to 021 hostel on the next street. If I was to come to Rio again I would stay in another area - perhaps Ipanema. 

Pros - friendly staff (didn't speak English but tried really hard at helping us when we checked in!) communal kitchen with cupboard of things to use and share to help cook (no need to buy herbs or sauces even garlic and onion.) close to supermarket and metro. Good price (you get what you pay for)

Cons - when we went the atmosphere was unfriendly - nobody spoke to us and we felt outsiders being from the UK. Place felt like it needed a better clean (toilets were dirty and one even had a big surprise waiting for me!) breakfast only lasts two hours (8-10) and at 9:30 there was NOTHING left and nothing was being restocked. 

A lot of why we left had to do with other guests and weren't the responsibilities of the hostel but we wouldn't return either way. 



Fine...just not for me!

This is a nice, well looked after hostel in the safe-feeling neighbourhood of Botafago.
The hostel was always clean and the 10 bed dorm that we stayed in was spacious and had lots of windows for air-flow. There was also a fan and timed air-con.
The staff were nice, especially the one girl with long, lighter coloured hair. She spoke perfect English and was able to help us with directions, telling us where we could do laundry etc. 
the hostel was really quiet the three days we were there-definitely not a party hostel! It's good that you can take your own alcohol and food in (just not beer). 
Breakfast was basic but nice enough- bread, cheese, ham, fruit and coffee. 
Location is good for transport links, some bars and restaurants as well as supermarkets.
Wifi downstairs in communal area.
The only negative point -the bathrooms are very small. No real space to hang clothes/toiletry bag whilst in the shower apart from outside the cubicle.

I would recommend this hostel if you don't want a party hostel and want to be in safe-feeling area.

Clean, quiet hostel in a good neighbourhood

I have stayed in Cafofo 9 nights in a single room with shared bathroom. Hostel is situated in perfect location in safe neighbourhood. It is close to the subway station, buses, good supermarket is one block away.
Cafofo offers good wifi free of charge. You can book interesting trips at the reception with convinient pickup straight from the hostel. The staff is very kind and helpful, 2 girls gives You advices about places worth to visit.
Hostel accomodation is very poor. The building is old and neglected. My room had no window, I felt like I was in a cage. It was so small there was no place to keep my luggage, no any closet, no hangers, only a miniature table for small lamp and air condition remote. I had to keep my suitcase on the bed to unpack my things!
During the rain walls were wet and the ceiling was leaking, not only in my room but almost everywhere. Toilettes and showers had no doors to the hall, only curtains and were very tiny. Common kitchen was very small and equipped with very old and dirty utilities.
Breakfasts were very poor and not tasty, they served daily the same cheapest cheese and luncheon meat from the nearby supermarket. 
In my opinion everything requires general renovation, athlough the hostel is cleaned daily, the whole building seems to be dirty all the time.
In Cafofo there is no any place to rest after visiting Rio, so called "common area" is small and gives You no privacy at all. In the whole building there is noise practicly all the time, at night You can hear every person climbing old wooden stairs or taking shower. During my stay there was no warm water every second day.
If You didn't bring Your own towel You must rent it for an extra charge – this is something unforgivable and unheard.
One more funny and unpleasant thing – hostel does not allow to bring any beer from outside, because they offer it to buy. You can bring vodka, tequilla or any other spirits but no beer. Unbelievable!
Finally the price – I paid around 25 euros per night and I think it's much too expensive comparing the service Cafofo offers. If You travel half a world it is better to spend some more money to be sure Your stay won't be spoiled because of  unsufficient level serivice.

Spartan accomodation

This is a great hostel! The staff are SO friendly and they all spoke english. They gave honest recommendations and went out of their way to help us out. The rooms aren't too big which is nice and the beds are comfortable, especially the pillows! It is a quiet hostel which is nice and everyone is very respectful. It's a short subway ride to the beach and is right next to a supermarket. The place is extremely clean. Overall our stay there was great, but the staff are what really made it special! A definite recommendation!

Great hostel!

We really enjoyed the stay at Cafofo hostel. The team was very welcoming, helpful and warm. We stayed in a small but quite comfortable room. Clean, working AC, what else would you ask for this price? Good breakfast!
