Perfect place. I have to say Puerto Piramides and Peninsula Valdes exceeded our expectations, and cabanas el mar served our purpose beautifully.  We could even watch the whales from our beds in the mornings  if we wanted to!  Puerto Piramides is a tiny village, but this place is located just beautifully in the centre  of it all. Units are self – catering but if you wish, you can take good breakfasts or pizzas in their restaurant. In the to of that, 10% discount on whale watching trip was arranged for  by the reception and whale watching really is worth your effort and money in this place.  Whales are everywhere,  it really is incredible!  On a good side also to be mentioned – if you stay Puerto Piramides, you only pay the national park adission once, whilst if you plan to visit from Puerto Madryn, you should probably pay daily if you plan to come on different days

Whalewatching from your bed!

First thing is if you want to see the whales you really should stay in Puerto Piramedes itself rather than Puerto Madryn.

We came in early December, end of the season, and stayed for four nights. For three out of the four days the whale boats weren't able to run due to the winds - I think 
that is unusual but we were so glad we hadn't booked on a day trip as we did get to see the whales (which were awesome).

If you do decide to stay, this is a good option. We stayed with our
 two kids in an apartment, self-catered and were very comfortable.

The apartment was very nicely decorated, cleaned well each day and was reasonably equipped. We could see the sea down the main street, and we were close to all the action.

The breakfast cafe is quite expensive, so suggest you self cater. No English was spoken, but we managed to getby with our broken Spanish. They wouldn't win any awards for friendliness, but they are OK.

On our last day we asked if we could leave our bags as our bus left at 6pm. They offered us the option of renting out the apartment for a further half day - it was quite an expensive solution, but as the weather was bad it worked for us.

Reasonable, spacious option in Puerto Piramedes

We stayed for 5 nights in November in the new(ish) apartments. There were enough facilities to be able to self cater if you wished to - gas rings, microwave & large fridge with ice box. There was also cable tv, dining area & small but comfy bedroom and decent sized bathroom with walk-in shower.
An item to be aware of was that the gas boiler for the hot water was in the kitchen/living area, which would not occur in Europe. The boiler was new and looked cared for, but if we stayed again I would bring a carbon monoxide detector with me (just in case).
Also for self caterers there was a kiosko next door selling all the basics and several cafes and bars nearby, also the ATM machine and garage where within 100 yards. 
The main reason for staying here though would have to be the views down 1st avenue and across the Golfo - bring binoculars, whales are visible from the apartment from sun-rise to sun-set.
Booking was done by e-mail in Spanish and was quick and efficient, however here comes the 'reservation'; when we arrived we were not expected and not welcomed and whilst we got our apartment after a 'phone call and much muttering we were never able to improve our relationship with the people there.Whilst we understand that our Spanish was not great and that we must have a really awful accent, my feeling was that there was no effort made to try and understand us.
This apartments are a good place to stay and there is plenty to do for a week (or more if the weather is good), as long as you have a car.  We thoroughly enjoyed staying in the village and ate incredibly well at the bar/ restaurant La Estacion, I would recommend staying in Puerto Piramides rather than Puerto Madryn if your main interest is the fauna of the peninsula and would say that these apartments would be an ok place to stay; but if staying here fluent Spanish would definitely make your stay more pleasant.
