Our two storey cabin at Cabanas Austral was a great base for our stay in El Chalten. True, at times it felt like the roof was going to fly off with the gale force winds at night, but it never did and inside it was cosy and comfortable. A new TV was installed on our second day which was appreciated as the wifi is terribly slow at best - a problem that seems to affect the whole town. There is a little kitchen which is great for eating in when you don't want to venture out in the cold. The Cabanas are on the main road and are about a 5-10 minute walk into the "centre" of town. Beware that nowhere here really takes cards, other than the supermarket. Our UK card was blocked when we tried to withdraw money the second time from the only ATM in town (by the bus station) and as there is no phone signal in the town we were a bit stuck without cash until we left. The ATM only lets you withdraw about AEP 1,000 per transaction so arrive stocked up with cash. 4 days in El Chalten was probably a bit much for us, but Cabanas Austral was a great place to stay.

Cabins in the wilderness

I stayed 2 nights after switching from hostel for added privacy. Was willing to pay more for it but ended up very disappointed! Entire cabin has no wifi!!! Made it very hard to get access to information whenever I wanted to in the cabin at my comfort, but had to go to ranch grande for wifi instead! Even the cheapest hostel has wifi everywhere even if it's slow! Also if you're looking for double bed, it's basically two twin beds connected together. I didn't know until middle of night, I felt a hard boundary in middle. I ended up sleeping on either side. Also, beds and pillows are old, no support if you climbed/hiked all day, the last thing you want is a good night rest! Beware, Claudia (owner) charges 21% VAT bs tax on top of what you're already paying! No breakfast either. She only wants CASH! So have plenty of Argentinian pesos if you stay here. My blanket was dirty too on my first night. LEAVE!!! :)
