Classic cheapie - No- nonse hostel
Run down and one of the cheapest and with free extras not seen in many other hostels.
Pros
- good location ( many street food around) 
- our double room on the top floor was quiet, clean with Tv ( broken), aircon and hot shower
- free breakfast
- small happy hour

Cons
-Do not expect too much in terms of atmosphere. There is no common space to hang out ( there is actually only travel agency/ internet space, dinning room and kitchen all in one) 
so it is not a place to meet new fellows to hang out
- Staff mixed in terms of friendliness
- Corridor and stairs is run down and really filthy ( the room was in good condition though)

But for honestly 5 $ 
-a bed or 12 $ a room ( with air-con, tv, bathroom)  in French Quarter
- free basic breakfast
- free internet
- free bear from 5-7 pm

It was one of the best options if budget is your concern. I d recommend

Classic oldschool cheapie - run down,  basic but cheap with few extras

At first, I couldn't pinpoint why I didn't like our stay at this hostel much: we had a 10$ room, cheapest in this street, including breakfast (we forgot about the free beer, but reading the reviews down here shows that they're there ;) ). 

Our room was average: a bit musky: no real window, a half working air con and a weird smell. 
But I guess, looking backwards, the thing I didn't like about the hostel was the staff. They don't seem to be interested in anything unless they can make money out of you. The front lady smiles a lot, but screams while adressing you when you walk by, quite annoying. The bus/boat that they arranged (for a high price) to Cat Ba Island was very poorly arranged and took us ages. 
For myself, won't come back here, but if your looking for a cheapy in the neighborhood and you don't expect much, a double won't hurt you I guess. 

Okay facilities, but weird staff

This little place at the end of Ngõ Huyên is not worth staying in, unless you don't use the shower because if you use it the room will be moist for the rest of the time you are here, the air con in the room or fan in the bathroom can't get the moist out!

The front desk is a joke, we wanted to rent two bikes and told them this the day before, in the morning when we wanted the bikes there where only one and the told us to wait a while for the other bike, 25 minutes later we left without bikes!

Stay in one of the other hotels in the area

Cheap and that's it!

Stayed there 1 nite only, understood that is a cheap hotel for backpackers and I didnt expect good facilities or amenities in the room. As some above reviews, the wifi in the room was so terrible! I couldnt access wifi when I was in my room although the receptionist gave me password of 2 wifi connections- 1 from the hotel and 1 from the restaurant/ coffee bar nearby, but both didnt work! My room was 203 in the slot of two floors. It was quite moist when having bath in the bathroom. But, it is no problem! I just mention about the behavior of the receptionist there (Her name is Ngoc maybe, a lady with short hair). I was using the computer, I heard she was talking to a guy who arrived in early morning that he had to pay for breakfast, but he refused and he explained that other receptionist agreed him the price for a room including breakfast. She called to someone and then she told her guest that room had been reserved by another one and ask him to go to another hotel (looked for by himself!). It wasnt his fault I thought! That guy got angry and collected his bags and asked for refund. She shouted to him and gave him money as for a beggar!!! I was speechless for a while! It is not the style for service! Second thing, I asked her to book a shuttle bus from the city to the airport and she charged me vnd100,000~USD5 and I paid with no doubt. She also asked her father to carry me to bus stop (5 mins away) without helmet and he drove on left side!!! And, the bus fee to the airport is vnd40,000~USD2 for everyone!!!! OMG! So, pls careful with them if you dont want to be cheated!

For sure I will never come back Tonkin Hotel!

Bad service!

We reserved a double room but didn't actually stay in the hotel because a room wasn't saved for us after a long flight.
Instead, we were taken to another hotel 15 seconds away from it which was horrible - 5 floors climb, extremely humid, dirty and with an air conditioner with no remote to turn it off so we ended up freezing at night.
