I th I k you may find that this hotel is shut down.if by any chance it isn't then it caught to be from outside it looks like a novel and if the curtains are anything to go by inside roomies of it is open but from what I seem  its disgusting

I would urge people NEVER to even consider this place!
Fawlty Towers is a 5* resort in comparison to this place.
The owner is constantly wasted and has police out every night.
She also abuses her poor dog!
With the unsavoury characters that "visit" the hotel bar area, I would avoid it like the plague.
Rooms are dirty, and badly in need of some serious work.
The whole hotel reminds me of the sort of establishment that would charge by the hour.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!

The Bay Hotel is in truly a great location, close to beach and near to the town shops and with excellent links to other main towns, cities and motorways.

Is it a hotel?  Well, to me it is really more of a Guest House (B & B)… but not cheap.  The tariff card indicates a total of just 18 rooms with basic rooms (including breakfast) @ £109, all through the year.  (NB. When we booked, direct with the hotel website, we found rooms to be £5 per night dearer on the regular Internet hotel booking sites).  Car parking is said to be free but, frankly, it’s a nightmare!  Really there is only space for a maximum of 6 cars and that’s with some being blocked-in!  If the owner didn’t have their car permanently utilising one of the spaces things would be a little (just a very little) easier.  With there being 18 rooms one would still be lucky to get a ‘free’ parking spot.    When departing the hotel I was told that any fees for parking off the premises are refunded – but they don’t advertise it! 

Inside is like a rabbit warren – going upwards.  We were on the top floor with a view including some water, in the distance, after other properties closer by.  The room was very small but bright and airy and very clean; Minimalist furniture; with a kettle, tea, coffee and drinking chocolate provided.  A good size wardrobe and en-suite bathroom – with no door latch but, again, very clean; quite modern and with good quality toiletries and toweling.  There was piping hot water and good flow from the ‘over bath’ shower.  There was little ‘sound’ privacy between the rooms on our floor.

TV signal, on the small slim widescreen, was very good with most of the Freeview channels available.  Wi-Fi (included in the room price) was marketed as ‘secure high-speed’.  It was okay in some areas of the hotel but, in the room, I found it to be unobtainable on my mobile, and with only between a poor 1 – 1.7Mp/s (download speed) on my laptop – so…quite frustrating! 

Breakfast (advertised as ‘superb’ and ‘included’ – but questioned if was required at check-in?) was only available between 8-9am).  The written menu lived up to expectations but the availability did not!  Anyhow, our second ‘hot’ choice was well prepared, hot and tasty.  All the usual cereals (individual boxes) and fruit were available along, also, with some cheese and ham.  

All things considered…The Bay Hotel can be recommended - for a true British Seaside experience.

Adequate – Serves the purpose - Top location.

Booked two nights stay. Called on the morning to confirm booking which they confirmed. Hour later whilst we were driving down, they called to say that unfortunately, they had to cancel but would not say why. On arrival in Teignmouth I went into reception and he said they had problems with the fire alarm. The place was in a disgusting state of repair. It actually looked more like a squat, I am not exaggerating. I was thankful that we were not stopping there. We did actually find an excellent B&B just round the corner. We subsequently found out that there had been five fire alarms over a couple of days and staff had walked out over conditions. On our second night, there was a fire on the top floor and three fire engines arrived to deal with the situation. Smoke was pouring out of the so called penthouse. I do not know if anyone was injured, but the next day the news was that it was suspicious and the owner had been arrested. What more do you need to know???

Other than that, Teignmouth was very enjoyable.

after writing 1 review and told it was not acceptable ill try again all I will say this time is disscusting place to stay the behaviour of this owner is beyond contempt save your £120 pound per night and stay some where worth it .I'm no snob but this is definatly the worst place ive ever stayed I never write bad reviews but this place deserves it .

seriously not happy

Had a superb family 'long weekend' for my Mum's 80th Birthday and the Bay Hotel rocks!

It's not a place for faint hearted or overly sensitive types (or any of the self appointed 'experts' that sometimes populate TripAdvisor) because it is a uniquely eccentric experience. 

Hats off to Lenny, Alan and Colin who keep the place on an even keel despite numerous occurrences that could blow the whole place off course. Shirley, the owner, is a lovely lady - most things written elsewhere have a degree of truth - she is a considerable character with a great deal of intelligence and wit - particularly when taken at face value and 'head on'.

Breakfasts are excellent every day, the ales in the bar are well kept and served, the rooms are comfortable and afforded four comfortable nights' sleeps.

So five stars Bay Hotel - thank you to all the characters we met there - owner, management, staff and the various friends and relations we met in the bar - you made the weekend and I wouldn't have missed this for anything!
