Received a gift voucher from family for a 2 might stay in a Monarch suite c/w dinner and Proseco in the room both nights.  Contact with the hotel is by email only, and so I message Neil Blackburn early June regarding availabiliry.  He is pleasant and accomodating at this point, and I make a booking for the weekend of 19th/20th August 2022.  Fast forward to Monday 15th August when I decide to email Neil to confirm the check-in time, and I'm told that they can't accomodate my booking, that the hotel is closed for full refurbishment, and that they are going to refund me in full!!

No advance notification from Neil regarding this, and so we had a situation where we would have travelled to Dunbar from Aberdeen on Friday, only to be turned away!!  All I get in email from Neil are some limp apologies - "sorry for any disappointment"

Disappointment is putting it mildly - to say that my family and myself are totally disgusted by the extremely unprofessional and discourteous way in which this cancellation has been handled is an understatement.

To their credit, the refund was arranged very quickly using bank transfer.  Neil did also explain that the hotel has new owners, and they wanted to close immediately for the refurbishment.  However, I couldn't have been the only guest on the books, as there were only 2 weekends available in August at the point of reservation, and so I can't be the only "disappointed" person.  Overall, based on my personal experience here I wouldn't recommend Fernie Castle.  Which is sad, as the reason the voucher was chosen as a gift in the first place is because my sister and brother-in-law attended a wedding there a few years ago, and had a room overnight.  They loved their stay there, and Neil couldn't have been more helpful.

Booking cancelled without prior notice

I bought a voucher from itison for may this year. Unfortunatly due to illness could not use it. After getting out of hospital contacted itison. They said the hotel would contact me direct. STILL WAITING. Not impressed.

My mum booked our stay back in December 2021 for my 50th birthday in June 2022 and 2 weeks before we go my mum received an email cancelling our stay.  My mum has been emailing for the last 2 weeks and no one has got back to her.  Also she has  been ringing and no one has been answering the phone.  I am appalled at the service and lack of contact.  The standard email states our holiday is cancelled due to short staff re Covid!!!

Brilliant night away with my husband! 
The castle and the grounds are gorgeous. If you love getting out in nature then you must go. Full of character and lots of places to explore.

As vegan I did not have high hopes for dinner but I was pleasantly surprised and had a beautiful 4 course meal. The main was one of the best I have had in a long time.

We stayed in room 11 and the bed was very comfortable.

In the morning breakfast was also very good and we had another look around to see the chickens, Horses and Goats. 

Recommend for a romantic night away with the other half.

Lovely night away to Fernie Castle

This was an it is on deal. A wee overnight stay with Prosecco, 4 course meal and breakfast. We thought it was  good value. Our room was clean,  loved the roll top bath. The food was great and the bar was cute. The staff really were all lovely. Some people may say its old and tired but it’s a castle and something different. We couldn’t complain atall.

Just returned from overnight stay with friends in Fernie Castle.This was an itison deal bed,breakfast with 4 course meal. Fantastic value and great stay in beautiful surroundings.
Neil (aka Mr B ), owner and host works tirelessly to ensure all his guests have a great time.Nothing is too much trouble.Place full of character with real charm.Spacious room and bathroom with slipper bath and shower.Bottle of Prosecco in room was welcomed.Meal served in charming restaurant, serving staff attentive and courteous ,and food piping hot and tasty. After dinner drinks enjoyed in unusual bar area,great atmosphere and good selection of alcoholic beverages.Breakfast next morning, full Scottish with rounds of toast.Fantastic.I will be returning to this hotel.Definately well worth a visit

Wonderful

My husband and me had a wonderful overnight in Fernie Castle.
It is amazing. We were in M'Lady suite, right at the top of a spiral staircase.
Yes,the building is old but herein lies the charm and romance.
High ceilings, old suits of armour, a beautiful drawing room, dungeon style bar, restaurant and lovely grounds.
Food was great and Neil and the young waiters were very attentive .
In the grounds are chickens, horses and 2 cheeky goats.
We had overnight in a suite, 4 course dinner and breakfast on an Itison deal.
Well worth the money!!
Only downside for my hubby was there was no tea/ coffee tray in bedroom.

Lovely old castle

After having  2 years not going anywhere...was really looking forward to just a night away....itison offer stated..."live like royalty in a plush castle". Itison should not be allowed to advertise this offer in this way.  Room smelled so bad of musty damp air that we had to fully open windows. Bathroom had no heat whatsoever, small shower was dirty with only a handheld showerhead with wall unit loose so showerhead was hanging off the wall. No soap holder etc. Flat screen TV was at best 7 inches...and wasnt able to pick up any channels. Just said on screen not tuned no channels. To say room was dirty was an understatement. Poor establishment that should not be quoting £370 original cost with an itison offer of £160 per night.  Massive disappointment. Would not recommend.

Not recommended...

Had a lovely afternoon tea. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. I would recommend a visit. Beautiful setting and the grounds look amazing. Hoping to book an overnight stay soon.

I think if there was a 2.5 star rating then I think that would be fair overall. 
Lovely location a bit off the beaten path and a few miles away from Cupar. Grounds were nice although the algae covered pond behind the hotel needs a bit of work. In fact that area could be a real feature if a bit of money was spent on it. In fact that was probably true overall for the hotel - it was ok but had the potential to be even better with a bit of money. Clearly the guy running it is trying to do it all on a shoestring and does nearly everything. Barman, receptionist, waiter etc. He probably even washed the dishes. 
4 course dinner was really nice so it got the thumbs up for the Itison deal. Wine was nice too (white). But it wasn’t the warmest room and regretted having a short sleeved shirt on. Take a jersey as the bar is a former stone wine cellar and wasn’t too warm either. So didn’t spend much too time there. Everything was run well though - even if it was a one man band. Dinner served between 7 and 8 helps with that. Only 12 guests there. 
Bed was comfy but shower was just ok and the bathroom door didn’t shut and the telly didn’t work which is not much good when there is little other things to do if the bar is too chilly. Oh and no draught beer. That was in bottles and cans. 
Overall just an ok experience.
