Historic building, well maintained, but the room was not worth £300+
Had a pleasant pre dinner drink in the atmospheric Crypt bar but the meal in the restaurant was dire.
A rump steak ordered medium was served well done+
The Halibut was served with none of the quoted potatoes in a bland white sauce again with none of the quoted herbs for flavouring.
We commented to the waitress at the time who offered another steak, which I declined due to time constraints. She then came back having spoke to the kitchen with a 50% discount for the meal.Thought at the time that the chef who presided over such poor food should have come out himself and not hid behind the poor young waitress.
The cooked breakfast in the morning was OK but with very limited options off the buffet.
A lengthy detour for not a lot

THE BUILDING IS THE STAR HERE

Had wanted to stay for many years and not disappointed when we finally did stay here. Typically friendly Northumbrian greeting and shown to room across the square from main building. Warm and comfortable room nicely appointed.
Had a pre dinner drink in the Crypt bar, the main building is fabulous with multiple stairs, rooms, bar and  dining areas.
Great evening meal in large main dining room washed down with an interesting, and very palatable, Georgian wine. Service again was very good.
Breakfast was also excellent.
Location is great for walking and cycling and Blanchland is an extremely nice quite village, hence a good nights sleep.

Fabulous Hotel and restaurant in lovely location

This is a gorgeous building and service was great as always. 

The food this time was a little disappointing. The bread and butter was gorgeous. The cheese soufflé wasn’t cheesy enough. The jus for the venison suet pudding was incredibly salty as was something else in the dish. Could it have been the cabbage?

The apple sponge cake had hardly any apple in and was quite dry-  with hardly any sauce and one tiny scoop of ice cream. 

We’ll be back though. Perhaps this was a blip. We all have them.

Amazing building and service

First things first..., beautiful location, amazing views, walks and building history. 
Bearing in mind the high cost of accommodation, food and drinks we would have expected a higher level of customer service. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case, we wasn't greated positively and almost felt like intruders.
We booked a table at the restaurant at 6pm , were then left standing awkwardly as  they were not ready and were disappointed to have been moved downstairs due to being full, even though we  booked weeks ago. 

The dinner was pleasant but lacked the extra touches.

The cheeseboard was terrible! I can only imagine they have had a bad night, it lacked tlc and was best suited for a mouse !! 

Our room was lovely! It is very clear that a lot of  thought goes into the rooms to make your stay comfortable,  lovely touches with biscuits, tea selections and welcome fudge. Our only critique was the external door, this was faulty and the latch been screwed to keep the door from locking, this  wasn't as secure as we had liked.

NOTE FOR POOCH OWNERS!!.....
Can be a costly affair!!
Unfortunately, we had a small incident with our pooch,  she had a nibble at  the blanket whilst it was hanging down from the bed, causing a small hole. This was just unfortunate on our part, however,  being honest we took the  blanket to reception to confess, only to be greated quite harshly by the gentleman at the front desk. Immediately informing us quite sternly that we would  have to pay, and they are hand made in Scotland.  We were then accused of breaking the terms and conditions by leaving our dog in the room on its own. Only replying that we hadn't and it was just an accident,  to then be questioned where our dog was now, felt intrusive and like we were being interrogated .
The cost for replacement will set you back £280 and it was only with the intervention from the Deputy Manager , who saw reason, that we managed to negotiate a fair price for a second hand blanket.

For warned is for armed! 
It questions that they may not be as dog friendly as first thought!



Left feeling bewildered !

Surprise afternoon tea from a close friend. This place is beautiful from the low ceilings to the roaring fire, we felt like we were in another time era. Afternoon tea was served by pleasant staff members, with an array of tasty treats and a huge pot of tea. £23 each seemed a bit pricey, but to be honest it was worth every penny.
Will recommend to my friends & family 😊

Surprise afternoon tea

A stunning old pub,set in picturesque surroundings. 
 We only had a coffee, but this historic old pub is well worth a visit. The crypt bar is so atmospheric, the building is a labyrinth of well designed rooms.The staff are very pleasant, helpful and full of local knowledge.

Would highly reccomend this place when visiting Durham/Northumberland. Can’t wait to return

What a lovely time we had here today! A gorgeous venue with fascinating history, cosy ambience very good food! The two guys that tended to our party were super friendly, patient, professional and helpful. 10/10. Thank you so much. Can't wait to come back! Happy new year X

Wonderful New Year’s Day luncheon 

Our third visit in 2022 was all the more special for the newly renovated rooms. We arrived and had drinks in the bar, it’s cloistered ceiling an architects perfection, matched only by the well chosen and beautifully served drinks by the glass. Champagne by the glass here is fresh as a pin! Lunch in the Derwent room by the fire on a Sunday was a riot. An it’s a knock out tray of giant Yorkshire puddings and 3 roast meats with vegetables arrived with very best gravy and was utterly delicious. I can ever ever take photos of food as it arrives and I am blown away! A ridiculously generous Sunday menu dessert plate follows. Being blissfully married to the Mole of Charlie M’s best selling book, a Northumbrian cake obsessed man, this is soon seen off. Fires are lovingly stoked, followed by good coffees and a walk in Blanchland’s whispering woods. Happily our newly renovated room is ready for check in. 5 star comfort abounds. Next morning, a breakfast of Northumberland origins hits the spot again. We stayed 3 times in 2022 and have just booked for Feb 23. The team here btw are superb. Looking forward to returning to the LCA very soon. Arthur the dog sends his love.

Monastic peacefulness meets Heavenly culinary pleasures.

We have just had a great evening in the ‘Crewe’ the staff were exceptional , room was fab and the meal wonderful . The guy behind the bar made us very welcome before and after dinner ….Thank you All and Happy New Year to each and every one of you . Hopefully see you in 2023 again .
