Amazing experience at Varlek hotel. I had a conference in Dar Es Salam. I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel.  The staff is so professional and accommodation was second to none.  I would recommend anyone to stay at Varlek.

This two-star hotel offers real value for your money.  Located in a slightly difficult-to-reach (off the beaten path, bumpy road) part of the Mikocheni area of Dar, it is non the less conveniently situated in terms of the Msasani Peninsula (and the great hotels, restaurants & shopping that go with it); also not far from the US Embassy.

We booked the superior room for about $33/night.  It was clean, and not only did the air conditioning work well, but it also did not blow on our heads at night (a pet peeve of mine when it comes to hotel AC’s in East Africa).  The room included a small fridge and a TV with two stations (local soap opera and local music). 

The staff was friendly and accommodating, speaking only Swahili except for the lady at reception who spoke decent English.  For dinner at their restaurant, I ordered chicken and rice.  It took about 40 minutes for the chef to produce the dish, but it was worth the wait.  Excellent spices and sauce, and generous portions- all for $5 (which included a bottle of water).

My only real issues were (1) the shower is literally just over the toilet – though this type of set-up is difficult to avoid in local hotels. (2) the water cut off from time to time – making toilet flushing and hand/face washing an unpredictable luxury.

I would definitely come back to stay at Varlek – for location, price, cleanliness and friendly staff the price cannot be beaten.

Great location, clean and friendly. Good bang for your buck.

Worst hotel ever. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. The restaurant only has one thing on the menu. The staff are rude. Our room and suitcases were broken into and cctv was conveniently broken. There is no security. Do not stay in this hotel!! Nothing good about it.
