We stayed at the Africa Queen for two nights while visiting Somone. We had a great experience. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff was friendly and helpful (especially Papy at the pool bar), and the surrounding village and lagoon were interesting and fun to explore. There's a solid Dibi place on the corner just down the street. They had some English speaking staff which was an added bonus. We heard that the hotel had somewhat recently been renovated so that might account for some of the less the stellar older review / pictures. 

Great Stay

Hands down 4.5-5 stars!!! — and I rarely give ratings this high… but it’s really hard to fault this place — and it’s definitely the little things that make the difference!

From check in to check out, everything was wonderful. They have clearly recently renovated and the aqua and teal colors everywhere are fabulous! Our room was sparkling clean, complete with everything we needed, and the shower is absolutely amazing! (just be careful you don’t scold yourself, as I accidentally did, as the handle in the shower does not indicate which is hot and which is cold…)

Staff are all-round wonderful, and many of them speak English. The beach chairs are a perfect width, with built-in pillows and your own Hotel Africa Queen quick-dry towel… how cool is that?

The walk into the village is a short but sweaty one, with a local market, fruit and vegetables, and souvenirs galore… make sure you try at least one trip into town!

I walked up and down the beach a few times and never once felt hassled or like I didn’t belong here. The beach is filled mostly with young kids playing in the water and playing soccer on the sand, as well as a few stray dogs trying to shelter from the heat. When the tide goes out there are a few places along the beach that look quite dirty, with trash everywhere… however, the hotel area is pretty clean and I noticed the staff were up early cleaning the beach first thing every morning. Something that fascinated me was watching locals come down to the beach to wash their goats and the young kids measuring out a soccer field on the beach using the inside of an old cassette tape — genius!

Dinner was fantastically displayed and staff were wonderful during each meal. Awesome live music and entertainment on the Saturday night, full of energy, Senegalese traditional dance and amazing African drumming — what a treat!!

Excellent wifi (I could stream videos/TV shows and upload same with relative ease).

Super quiet hotel — we slept like a baby each of the three nights we stayed!

Only two (very small) negatives: quite a few cockroaches around; the cleaners came to our room around 1pm each day and left our door wide open whilst they left for about 20 or so minutes — this seemed a bit odd and not very security conscious…

These last two points aside, Hotel Africa Queen set a very high standard for the remainder of our trip and we wouldn’t hesitate to return!

A truly wonderful stay!

Husband and I loved our 2 week stay at this amazing little hotel. We stayed in the garden rooms across the road from the restaurant, pool and beach rooms but felt we got a great deal with colourful garden around us and very quiet. Less than 2 minutes and we were on the private beach where you could watch local long boats out fishing, pelicans bobbing along, traders passing by, goats and horses getting bathed and even visits from local tribesmen all dressed up.
Staff were so welcoming , so helpful and really friendly.
We did half board and food was moderate but local cuisine night was fantastic with fish and sea food we had never tried before ( sea urchin was one) . Breakfast was adequate but I struggled with the meat which was always very tough. Salads however were delicious and lots of variety and they sure know how to make sweets!
We used the Hotel as a base to travel over North of country and it was perfect for this. Lovely pool to come back to after busy days. Bar with cocktails and plenty sun.

Holiday to Senegal

Nice place to relax on a beach chair or pool chair. Good service. 11000 CFA for food + chair (drinks not included) for visitors. There 's Wifi. I can 't talk about the rooms as I don't actually stay here.

Chill at pool and beach.

Room was big but bathroom could be refurbished. Staff makes the difference, they are great. Breakfast and Dinner are great with plenty and tasty food. We had a great time and we could oversee little problems with the wc.

Good, little overused hotel

I spent a night at this lovely hotel en route to Ziguinchor, Casamance. I arrived from Abuja in the afternoon and after a 45 minutes’ drive from the new Blaise Diagne International Airport I arrived the Somone village. The hotel is located by the main road going through Somone and you will find shops, restaurants and markets nearby. The Check in by the receptionist was swift, polite and helpful. I liked the interior in the room, the room was clean and had the rustic feel I really like.  There is a beauty parlor, massage available and a souvenir shop on the premises in addition to a pool and a pool bar, the hotel is located by the beach with a wonderful sea view. I had the buffet dinner at the hotel restaurant in the evening and the food was very tasty. I left too early and prior to breakfast the next morning to try this option. I would really recommend this hotel and it is very convenient and pleasant for a layover and close to the new airport for Dakar.

Wonderful

We took our three children to experience Africa during winter half term. Hotel is in a good location with shops, restaurants and market nearby. Its a simple hotel, good value for money. Basic breakfast, clean rooms, no luxury but staff is lovely, they care and are very friendly. We did few trips to the local school, cookery lesson etc but the highlight was the nearby Safari park. Children loved it and had a new experience of a completely different culture. They loved the pool and we did some African dancing in the evening with the local group and hotel staff. We were there on Valentines day and chefs prepared special Valentines dinner with some creative dishes. Generally I would recommend to eat in the Sommone lagoon at least once. Its slightly hippie but food and views are gorgeous.

We had a fabulous time!

The Africa Queen is a charming initmate beach hotel in Somone. Basic but very clean rooms, lovely patio with two pools and friendly staff. Breakfast was pretty average but the crepes are utterly delicious.

Quaint beach hotel

Good, small scale and friendly hotel. Right at the beach and nice pool. Nearby Somone Lagoon for nice boattrips. There are several roadshops nearby. We have come here from time to time in the past, and still like the friendlyness once they get to know you. In addition prices are more moderate then some nearby upscale hotels.
