Our group was made up of four adults and five kids under ten. We stayed for two nights on Amantani with Romulo and Silviana. 

It was just the coolest experience! Amantani is a little island in the middle of lake Titicaca. The village is filled with people who have been there for generations and mostly speak Quetcha. The guest house has windows our into the lake. The whole island is so peaceful, you feel like you've traveled back in time. 

Romulo was our host and guide. He speaks Quetcha (I might be spelling that wrong, but it's the indigenous language of the area) and Spanish. We speak a little Spanish, but got along with Google translate's help. He told us all about life on the island and in the community. He took us up to the white Jesus statue (the altitude was too intense for us sea level folks to make it up to either of the peaks of the island) and introduced us to his neighbors. The view of the lake from anywhere is awe inspiring. 

Silviana cooked us so much food for breakfast lunch and dinner that I (politely) asked her to make less. In true Grandma fashion she smiled and said she would, and then absolutely didn't. She let us come into her house, and showed us how to knit. She let our six year olds help her in her traditional kitchen. She strapped me and my friend into some of her own traditional clothes so we could attend the town fiesta. 

They welcomed us into their home, fawned over our kids and made us all feel like family. Our stay with them was the highlight of our whole two weeks in Peru.

Magical homestay 

One afternoon, after we were committed to visiting Peru, Elias, from our tour operator, Kaypai Peru Tours asked me if we were up to a most unusual experience and one that most visitors never experience. What he had in mind was a visit to Amantani Island and literally living with a Peruvian family for the afternoon, night and morning. Sounded good so I did some research. 

Amantani is a small, generally circular, steep and rocky island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. It's about a 3 hour boat ride from the harbor in Puno. It could easily be considered to be "isolated" from the outside world. It is NOT a tourist attraction in the typical sense. There are no roads, no power, no TV, no internet, no lighting except flashlights or candles, no heating, no AC, no indoor plumbing, no running water and no refrigeration. Get the idea? It is rustic. The buildings are solid, and there are plenty of blankets for sleeping in the cool night air. Amantani has a small population of  about 3,500 people. The hillsides are typically terraced for agricultural production and planted with wheat, quinoa, potatoes, and other vegetables. Livestock, including sheep and alpacas were visible on the slopes. 

There are no hotels on the island, but some of the families on Amantani open their homes to tourists, through tour operators, for overnight stays and provide cooked meals. We are talking Peruvian Rustic. And so.............................. 

After visiting the Floating Islands of Uros in the morning, we got back in our boat and two hours later we were on Amantani Island. That night we slept in a room outside and adjacent to our hosts living quarters. They were a family of 8 and they were all together in the main home nearby. The houses are about 150 meters above the lake surface. Getting up there along the rocky and steep path was challenging. Because of my being a bit out of condition, and the high altitude I almost didn't make it to their house. The father actually helped carry my small bag up the hill and I had to stop quite a bit to catch my breath and get my heart rate down. The accommodations were RUSTIC!!  Going to the loo at 3 AM, using only moonlight to find it was an adventure. I forgot to bring a flashlight with us. Big mistake. The food was very basic and cooked on an outside homemade wood burning fire. Unfortunately since there is no refrigeration our food was mostly soup, vegetables, cheese and homemade bread. Dinner and breakfast were quite tasty and very filling. Almost every meal had some form of rice and potatoes in it.  

The family we lived with were extremely good to us and very concerned that we had a good time with them. Even though I speak none of the languages they spoke, we managed. They are all very hard working and live the kind of day to day life that I'm not sure I could have coped with when I was much younger.

IF you are open to an experience you never considered before, give this a try. It's worth the time and effort.
