This review is by seasoned YHA users, a family of 5 who have visited most NZ YHAs.

Good 
- fully fitted out kitchen 
- location for access to central QT 
- typical YHA facilities (laundry, drying room etc) to a high standard. 

Not good
- parking. Abysmal. I would go as far as saying only stay here if you are a solo/ youth traveller and not a family with a car. Not YHA’s fault per se, but frankly don’t market this one as being family friendly. If you rent a car, don’t use this YHA, go to the other one in QT. 
- curfew at 2230. Three different nights my wife and I were asked to leave the kitchen between 2200 and 2230.  Our rowdy activity - a bottle of wine and Netflix while the kids were asleep (I know, outrageous!!). YHA advertises as no curfew, so don’t have a curfew. The night manager’s approach came across as kicking people out so he could have the space himself with his friend to turn on YouTube and then turn up his music.

Honest Review by a family of YHA fans

We stayed here for 1 night in a family room with ensuite with our two teenagers. The staff were very friendly and the room was large and clean.
The best thing was the view of the lake from our room and also the amazing kitchen/lounge. The room was super quiet even though we were right in town and beds were comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

Awesome hostel in fantastic location

The hostel has all the facilities you would want from one and every room has an ensuite bathroom. The kitchen/ lounge is a lovely place to sit with views out to the lake and mountains. Its in a perfect location with places like Fergburger about 100m away - we bought lots of food back to the kitchen to eat. The only thing missing is parking - I don't know how much the other YHA has but it would be nice to be able to park there for your stay.

Luxury hostel - more like a budget hotel!

step out the door into the centre of q'towns buzz.
very nice staff, great views from dining room & lake facing rooms, clean & tidy.
plumbing a bit dodgy, low pressure, but adequate shower once learned to run bath then adjust shower temp. having a bath was a bonus too for soak after busy day.
beds comfortable & good housekeeping.
more than satisfied with our weeks stay.

location, location......

Went here for a 2 days visit in Queenstown, got there the reception is not being helpful at all with common knowledge of the city such as parking, no  empathy as we are travelling by land drove for 11 hours to get there. It was early evening, website that we used to book the room said there’s parking, it’s not my fault i didn’t read all the review which they said in the other review mentioned no parking, i checked their star rating, and what’s mentioned.

Although it’s website fault but have some empathy that’s why they in service business in the first place.

Heater didn’t work at the room and it’s winter in Queenstown and I have children with me, think!!? Have some empathy, that’s why we are called GUESTS not Mates the way you referred us, as guests show us your home not everyone knows what to do with your equipment ( they have heater and I don’t know how to and i thought it’s not working i went down to reception again where i picked it up and i got the worst looked like i’m stupid).

Not recommended, especially it’s our first time in queenstown, it’s disappointing.

Upside is in the central of the town but other than that nothing!

Worst service and room

I stayed at the YHA Lakeside as well which is much better than Central. This place is great for its location, right in the center of town. The receptionist was awesome in getting me a deal with the Milford Sound Tour for me. Rooms are spacious and has individual bathroom and showers. The shower was hot and had good pressure. No charger port by bed, had to convene at the few available around the room. The kitchen can only comfortably have 2-3 ppl cooking at a time but had all the necessary cookware and utensils. Wifi was iffy for me and worked better closer to the lounge/kitchen. Open space dining, kitchen, and lounge area. Luggage room available. No lockers in room, located in a separate location and had to pay to use them. There's a balcony that overlooks the street which is cool.

Standard stay, convenient location, recommend YHA Lakefront over this one

There is a short stay loading bay just outside the hostel to offload your kit. We received a very friendly welcome. Our double en-suite room was very comfortable. Although busy, the kitchen was well equipped. Numerous fridges were around the building to store produce. There are long term luggage lockers ($2). A laundry is also available.

Recommended.

Good Budget Accommodation st the Heart of Queenstown 

Really convenient, but stay at the YHA Lakefront if you can.

Like Lakefront YHA this place also has friendly welcoming staff and the great organisation and equipment I’ve come to expect from YHA.

It’s got a nice dining kitchen area with beautiful lakefront views, possibly even better than YHA Lakefront.

But it’s just a bit old and worn and creaky, like a well-loved children’s blanket. It needs an upgrade and a facelift. I found the dorms and the corridors a bit depressing..

Anyhow, still a decent budget bet and excellent for early morning buses if you want to just grab a coffee and stumble half-asleep onto the bus.

Handy for town but needs a facelift 

The location was central as mentioned, the room was big! Although slightly old, everything was clean and comfortable to stay in. Stayed in the double bed en-suite room, toilet was also clean. Kitchen facilities was okay. Overall pleasant stay.

Good

YHA Queenstown shows an impressive review rate across the internet (8.5 in booking.com, 4 in TripAdvisor, 8.7 in hostel world), which I feel is overrated.
I’ve stayed three nights at the private en-suite room, so for the amount of 130nz per night, I was expecting better conditions.

The PROS of staying there is their central location right next to the pier and shops (however no parking, but that was known in advance, expect to pay an additional 50$ per day for parking). 
The room was large and heated.
I had coffee and tea in the room and a hairdryer (which weren’t available at other YHA en-suite rooms I was in).

CONS - 
First, the bathroom wasn’t very clean. I’ve had hair (not mine) and shaving foam leftovers in the shower and on the floor.
The bath curtain was missing 50% of the links connecting it to the top hanger, and one was connected with a plastic strap. Seriously?
The plastic toilet seat was peeling and yellowish.
The bed was not very comfortable but was ok.
Common kitchen - the kitchen is large and spacious; however, some pots and pans were oily and semi-clean, I went to wash them myself only to find out the washing soap was diluted 90% water mixed with detergent. Why? Hygiene is super essential in a place like that with so many people cooking. 
The hostel has no elevator, so I had to carry my 22 kg suitcase and my stuff up 2.5 floors. If you need accessibility - this place is probably not for you.
Hot water in the shower - expect your shower water to change from hot to freezing if other people are showering at the same time. I’m not sure if there is a water pressure issue or whatever they limit the time you can stay in your shower, but I couldn’t shower probably. 
 
I hope YHA will take their service seriously and offer better conditions for tourists paying hotel price accommodations. 
Maybe it is oriented for young people who are happy with any accommodation more than for middle-aged adults who need better conditions. Yes, I was expecting more for 130nz per night.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my stay.
