As a female solo traveller, the main thing that stuck out to me here was the fact that there was no staff present overnight. They began their morning shifts at 8am, meaning if anything happened overnight, well, there was no member of staff to help. It is not a hostel for travellers; theres no common room or anything like you would expect in a hostel. The place was incredibly run down and the corridors unclean. As bad as it sounds, and I do not want to be offensive, i must admit  it felt more like a place for those facing homelessness than for those travelling. I didn’t feel at ease there at all. Would highly recommend you find somewhere else to stay, and not to be fooled by the cheap prices.

No Staff Present Overnight.

They ripped us off. They overcharged my credit card by 37€ and never gave us a refund. We had booked through Hostelworld who told us that we’d pay 82 upon arrival but the hostel just decided to deduct more than that.  The reception never picks up. Apparently the place was bought up by Chinese and it is being remodelled. If you would like to stay here I’d recommend to wait at least until August 2022 because when we went there was no reception, no staff to help, nothing. Service is terrible therefore. Cleanliness is mediocre and the place smells terrible. Very dingy. Don’t stay here, stay in a proper hostel instead. Only good thing is location.

Ripped us off

The room we booked was very small and definitely not worth the money. No private toilet and shower, only shared. These were not clean. Very cold in the hallway. I would definitely not recommend this hotel room.

However, the location was great and the people who worked there were nice. I think for people who are looking for a hostel and don't have high standards, this can be a nice place.

Very small room for a very high price

SCAMMERS! They sell rooms with no windows!! That is not shown in the page. Once you get there you realize it´s a tiny room with no window and no ventilation, like sleeping inside a closet (I´m talking about sunny August). When I tell to the "receptionist" (that is serving tables in the restaurant at the same time) she replayed that I could sleep with the door open. Nothing makes sense here. It´s a restaurant with rooms, not a hotel. Corridors and stairs smell like old oil fried food coming from the kitchen. Kitchen don´t have smoke extractor (that is not legal), smell goes up to the rooms (they leave the fire exit door at the top floor to get ventilation). A total dissaster.

Stayed here for 2 nights. The first thing to note is that it is just a room, very basic, a bed, table and chair. WC and shower shared with other guests. It wasn't too busy when I stayed so there were no problems with sharing. Secondly, the staircase is very narrow and steep, especially if your room is on the top floor. If you only have a backpack/rucksack it's ok, not so if you have suitcases. The check-in is through the restaurant but this only opens at 4pm on some days, though you can use your room keycard to access the side door 24 hours a day. The good points are its location, about 15 minutes from the main station, Metro nearby and trams running nearby as well, so easy to get around. The bed was good, I had two nights good sleep, so no complaints there. Towels are provided. A nice touch is that each room has a name (mine was Rosalie). In conclusion, a good place if you just want somewhere to spend the night while exploring the area, but beware the stairs.

Good location

Nice and cosy bed,  I slept well and it's close to the shopping district.  The receptionist was very nice and welcoming.  I will definitely stay here again.

friendly stuff, good position, but  noisy

We spent two nights at this ‘family hotel’. The website looked okay and the photos of the rooms were nice. However, photos do not capture sounds and smells...
It turned out it is a hostal. With loud tourists and thin walls & doors. The carpet was dirty and in the stair case it smelled rather unpleasant.


Not even close to hotel standards

I booked the Mama room for Sunday to Wednesday. Great arrival, the location & street level cafe entrance is fab. Several noticeably shabby corridors and stairways lead to my top floor where the noise of a washing machine and dryer operating full time opposite Mamas room strikes me as humerous until late tuesday evening. It smells of dirty laundry. The room seems unserviced and bed dirty and only when arriving back on monday to a clean room & bed and reading the hotel rules & services folder that it became obvious the previous customers sheets had not been changed. By rule, the linens are washed every 3 days unless requested otherwise. Theres no phone, no tv and not enough air.Im sorry to say that although Thuis Bij Schell has the makings of something great, an overal lack of standards and attention to detail just aint sexy.

Cant complain for the price?

Terrible experience.  No hot water .no Internet connection. The room is very very basic. Dirty carpet and €50 deposit on checking.  I wouldn't recommend this place to someone
