I stayed here for 3 nights in a 484 sq ft junior suite.

PROS:
The hotel is in a good location a few minutes walk from Alameda Central and the Revolution Monument. There is an OXXO and Farmacia Guadalajara two minutes from the hotel, where you can buy snacks, drinks, and pastries. There is also plenty of street food nearby.

The staff is friendly and polite, but I only met one staff member that spoke English. I speak Spanish, but if you don't, be prepared to use a translation app. I enjoyed having a kitchenette; utensils and cutlery were provided. Even though my room faced the street, there was very little street noise. I didn't hear noise from other guests either, even though the hotel was fully booked.

There are outlets near the bed to charge your electronics. There was plenty of closet space.  The bedroom window opened, allowing for fresh air. Lighting in the room was good. Shower was hot, and water pressure was strong. 

The ground floor lobby is spacious and modern, more so than the rest of the hotel. There is daily housekeeping, and it is excellent.

CONS:
When I arrived in my Uber, there were 3 homeless men lying on the sidewalk in front of the hotel. There is no sign on the building, and you can't tell it is a hotel. There was construction on both sides of the street, and dust was everywhere. If you walk to the top of the short street on which the hotel is located and turn left, you will see ladies of the evening about a block away. Turn right, and you will be at Alameda Central in a couple minutes.

The hotel is old, and the furniture is shabby. The bed is like a big cot -- it only had a mattress, no box spring.  One of the two dinette chairs had a cushion with no cover, just a bare raggedy piece of foam. There was no full-length mirror in the room. There was an ironing board in the room, and an iron was available on request.

Front desk is only open part-time, and completely closed on Sunday. There is, however, a security guard 24/7 who buzzes you in and out of the hotel, and operates the manual elevator. 

My initial impression of the hotel and surrounding area was rather negative. It has a seedy vibe. However, after the first day the place grew on me. Considering how cheap it was and the central location, I would stay there again.

Cheap bare-bones hotel, but I liked it

The hotel is located right in the old part of Mexico City, next to Hidalgo metro. Easy to go to everywhere. The room we had had a small kitchen with a two-burner stove, which was excellent. The kitchen could use a bigger pan and another pot, but it was adequate and functional. Getting the food from the San Juan market and cooking it is by far the best. The place is incredibly clean. The bed is awesome. Floor to ceiling window offered great view of the main street though that was also a bit noisy. The wifi could be better, but that's a minor point. Overall, definitely will stay here next time we're in Mexico City. Highly recommended.

Perfect for visiting Mexico

very  central, very safe, lovely helpful staff, spacious rooms with everything you need.
This is a good hotel in the historical center next to the Almeda Park and very close to Hidalgo metro. The Diego Rivera is also literally minutes away. The dancing in the park was such fun and the markets full of great crafts and lovely food stalls. Close to good restaurants cheap and sweet little cafes and a short walk to the main Zocolo.
the rooms have little kitchens which was nice for making tea, they were also very clean.

Besides there being no warmth in welcoming us yesterday, there appears to be no maid service, no heat and the water is lukewarm.  The bed is okay at best but really very uncomfortable.  Of countless places that I have stayed around the world, this place ranks almost at the bottom.  The wifi also goes out constantly so that you have to reconnect.  The worst part is that we have to suffer through seven more days here with no way to get out of the reservation.

No warmth in welcome, no maid service, no heat, lukewarm shower,

We (a couple in our 60s) were very happy to stay at Avilla. Sure, the place isn't the Hilton but it's modestly-priced, clean, well-equipped, comfortable and in a great position, as others have mentioned. It made things very easy to be able to stroll up to Bellas Artes & Zocalo & various other spots of interest & activity.The staff are all very pleasant and eager to help. The two gentlemen who alternated as managers spoke English well enough for reasonable communication, and the two porters/securiity guys made great efforts to understand our pathetic Spanish when we needed to ask them anything. We had a front room on 3rd floor, with windows on two sides looking
over & up Avenida Hidalgo - a great view. Traffic noise was certainly noticeable, but it is Mexico City after all, and who doesn't travel with earplugs? The surrounding area is full of character (and characters) and a bit seedy, but we never felt remotely threatened no matter what time we left the hotel or returned to it. The ex-Convent Cafe over the road is great for breakfast & Kioskito up by Metro Hidalgo excellent for a budget lunch or dinner.The cantina between the hotel & the Metro is an old-style bar good for a drink or 2. Avilla is probably the best value for money in the city and we highly recommend it.

Great value, clean, comfortable, safe

If you're considering booking, this hotel and are a female single traveller, DON"T!!

I like to think that I prepare carefully for my trips, as I am a woman over 60, requiring a cane, and like to feel safe and secure where I am staying. The problems started here when I tried to check in. I had upgraded to a room on the top floor. But of course, that was "Deluxe" and I hadn't PAID Deluxe. So I informed them I would be moving to another more amenable location the next day. Suddenly, that room was made available for me. So ok, problems happen.

There seemed to be difficulties passing on requests from staff to staff. THREE TIMES I requested "No maid service" as I often have to return to my room during the day to rest for a while. That request was never passed on, even requiring her to clean and replace towels the day I was leaving! You definitely got the feeling that no one really cared.

After paying for Nov. 2, I actually arranged checkout at 9:30 pm that night with the front desk, as my flight left at 1:05 am, and I wanted use of my room during that day. When I asked if security guard could call me a SAFE taxi to take me to the airport at 9:30 pm, front desk informed me that the hotel could prearrange it, with cost of $150 Mx. I agreed, and asked if this was safe. I was assured it was. I asked if I could prepay it with front desk, and was told no, just pay the driver.  I also asked if, because no one was on the front desk at 9:30 pm, if it was ok to leave room e-card on the table in the room.  I was assured that it was.

Taxi driver arrived in an UNMARKED car at 9:15, and asked me, over and over, what I had done with the room key, in a most aggressive manner. I assured him that I had left it in the room, as arranged with front desk. I felt that it was really none of his business, as, to me, he was just a taxi driver, not the hotel manager. We then left for airport.

The back seat belt in his car did not work, and the driver drove VERY fast to the airport. He did not say one more word to me during the drive.

When we reached the roads leading into the airport, he turned to me and said, "Pay me now, I'll drop you here." I had  arranged a drop off at Terminal 2, NOT on some dark road in the middle of nowhere at 10:00 pm at night. I said, "NO. You'll be paid when you drop me at Terminal 2." He then began swearing at me, swinging his arms around, driving erratically. Then we came to Terminal 1, and he said "Pay me now and get out here." Again, because I was very afraid of my helplessness in this situation and had NO idea where he wanted to drop me, put on a brave face and got louder and more determined than ever, saying "NO! You'll get paid when you do what you're supposed to do!" More swearing, etc. from him, that I was giving him problems. He said: "Why do you make me go into airport! Get out here and walk to Terminal 2!" I was not only a single woman but I have a problem walking and use a cane. 

When he finally pulled into Terminal 2,  he stopped and he reached toward me in an aggressive way from the front seat. I threw 5 $20 MX and one $50 mMx at him ($150 Mx as arranged), so he wouldn't touch me, and started to get out of the car to get away from him. With his left hand, he quickly pocketed some money then started screaming that I hadn't paid him enough. When I attempted to get out of the car, he locked the doors. Confronted with this hostility, I started screaming, as loudly as I could, "Help!" and banging on the windows of his car to get out. 

To avoid the attention from porters and other drivers at the terminal, he unlocked the car, gave me my second bag when I demanded he open the trunk, continuing to scream and swear at me the whole time. "Pay me what you owe me! This isn't enough! Why are you doing this to me! etc." I ran into the airport for safety. At this point, I spent the next hour crying because I was so frightened by the whole situation.

This event RUINED my entire holiday. As I always do, I left tips for the house keeper and the two security guards, who were so pleasant and cheerful every day. I ALWAYS pay my way, and even more, because I, too, work in the service industry and know how much a little tip and kind words can mean. Nothing was too much trouble for any of these others. So why did the hotel target ME and recommended a taxi driver who was going to trick, frighten and swindle a single woman like this? Maybe an assumption that little old ladies won't fight back.

Overall, I was left with courteous and pleasant service from minor staff; major staff (ie front desk employees) seemed difficult to approach and surly when I tried to speak to them. 

RUN, FAST, from this loud area over run with prostitutes, glue sniffers, homeless and the lingering stench, on a clear morning, of human waste in every corner and patch of grass surrounding the hotel. This is TRULY not a bargain.
