Great place in the Centre of town with the onsen nearby Nice service with nicely decorated suites .Will definitely come back again .

Stay there with the family, under state of emergency in Japan, so was quite but what a lovely place, great staff, great food, decent accommodation for a family of 4, close to the ski area. You also have great deal to rent all the equipment for enjoying the beautiful snow in Japan! 🙏 

Lovely stay

first time visiting nozawa and after a fun day of skiing pitstop at Tanuki for coffee.  we ordered piccolo and it took us back to sydney.  Bread was beautiful and delicious.  got to know they have accomodation upstairs and comes highly recommended.   its on our list for our next visit.  

One of the best places in Japan where i found coffee as i used to get back home.  

pitstop worth it

A family of 5 and a family of 4 travelling together to ski Japan from Australia.  We were recommended to Tanuki by friends and it didn't disappoint.  Our 4 bedroom apartment was incredibly well designed, spacious and functional with everything you need. The hotel itself was kitted out for everything you need for a great family ski holiday.  Breakfast in the cafe downstairs each day was fresh and fabulous  (sourdough bread made in house, great coffee, avocado on toast)...The adults made it down the bar in the basement for drinks and live music while the kids watched Netflix in the spacious lounge by the fire.  To top it all off, the hotel is located in the most central location, near to all the best shops and onsens and a 5 min walk to the bottom of the slopes.  Highly recommended!

Stunning contemporary hotel with fabulous restaurants in the best location in town.

We’re family of 4 staying for 4 nights at Tanuki Room 5. To say we’re looking forward to our stay at Tanuki was an understatement and it all started pleasant enough. 
It quickly deteriorated.....
1. Stink bugs everywhere!! In the depth of winter where temperatures average in the negatives and snow falling heavily outside, our room is infested by stink bugs. I’ve stopped counting at 14 bugs I squashed (add their stinky smell as well.....pls don’t judge me for squashing them, how else was I supposed to get rid of them?)
2. Noise level from footsteps in the hallway, up and down the stairs, people chatting in the next room. We hardly slept in 4 nights
3. The mattresses themselves.....well they started sinking in the middle halfway through the night
4. No proper housekeeping for the 4 days we were there. One of the two bins is always missed
5. General unhelpfulness when it comes to helping us book/find restaurants to eat. There’s this air of snootiness/casual attitude emanating from some of the staff as if they’re too cool to be bothered to help us. 
Tip for first timers to Nozawaonsen, book your restaurants for dinners for the entire length of your stay on arrival (or even better find a hotel that will book them for you before you arrive), or you’ll be eating food from family mart. Restaurants reservations were like gold dust. 
Anyway we love Nozawaonsen but not Tanuki. We expected at the very least bugs free room with some peace and quiet after a day in the slope for the price we paid ($490/night), but we didn’t get that, so the one star here is for decent coffee and breakfast, the rest is absolutely below par. 

Unfulfilled expectations

Our group of 5 have just reluctantly left Tanuka after a glorious 6 night stay over Christmas that was 12 months in the planning. From the initial inquiry to check out, Brad & Yumi have been a delight to deal with. We were collected at Iiyama station and delivered to the door of Tanuki & Brad Organised our lift tickets & ski hire in advance including a discount. Tanuki is ideally located at the end of the Main Street of the charming village of Nozawaonsen and a short walk to the yu road which is the covered escalator that delivers you to the ski area. I’ve never had such an easy access to the ski area and it sure beats shuttle buses & long treks carrying skis (you leave your skis & boots at the hire place). Having had a good look around, it is the most convenient accommodation location in town, with shops and an abundance of restaurants within easy walking distance. We stayed in 3 rooms in the lodge section which is reached through the main building and along a corridor that runs behind the neighboring building. The rooms are traditional in style & fit out, with a very comfortable bed on the ground & a capsule style bathroom that although small was perfectly adequate with a shower over a bath. Breakfast was included in the room rate & served in the ground floor restaurant which s cosy industrial in style. We worked our way through the breakfast menu & can’t speak highly enough about the quality & skill of the chefs & service team. Special mention is required for the dashi eggs & the coffee which we all agreed was up there with the best we’ve had (& we’re from Melbourne!). We had dinner in the restaurant & loved the food & atmosphere. On Christmas Eve we enjoyed a spectacular Tepinyaki dinner in the upstairs restaurant which is beautifully designed & seats a maximum of 14. Our chef Yugi delivered an amazing 6 course dinner featuring local produce including marbelled sirloin & salmon. It was the best Tepinyaki I have experienced. Tanuka also boasts a cruisy basement bar that is fitted out with booths & bar seating & seemed to be a favorite haunt with From live music from 9pm. To sum up - Tanuki is a fabulous accommodation & dining premises that delivers on every front & is run by seriously good operators. I checked out the apartments on the top floor which were stunning & we’ll consider that option when we return. Thank you Brad & Yumi for making our family’s first visit to Nozawaonsen so memorable & stress free.

Ski holiday perfection

Tanuki Lodge is in the perfect location of the village of Nozawaonsen, easy to walk to everything including the lifts and bus stop for nearby Iiyama (where the bullet train arrives/departs)
The front half of the building is renovated in, what I would describe, as industrial chic. Exposed concrete ceilings with lots of muted lighting in the restaurant where you enjoy a really good breakfast and coffee each morning.
Same for reception & the tepanyaki restaurant.
Unfortunately our room wasn’t quite as I expected or would be, it was reached down a drab and long corridor that connects the 2 buildings. The bathroom was tiny...I mean really tiny like and airplane toilet tiny! However we got around this issue by using the beautiful O Yu onsen directly opposite, Yumi & Bradley kindly gave us robes so we could stroll around the village trying all the onsen.  The room could do with a small fridge so you could keep some milk for coffee or supplies, also maybe less than a Fluro light as it didn’t look very cosy at night.
The beds are super comfy and warm and the rooms could be (and I’m sure in future will be) so much nicer with a few touches and colour changes. 
However I must say that the apartments that I looked in at the front of the building were absolutely gorgeous, stylishly decorated and big bathrooms! So if the apartments are available maybe book one of those!
We will come back to Nozawaonsen again soon and would stay again, just not in the same room.

Location Location!

We stayed at Tanuki for 2 weeks on Feb/March. The place well exceeded all our expectations! Tanuki is located in the heart of town, only a short walk from the mountain lifts, and within a stoned throw from more delicious eateries than I could count.
We spent the first week is a traditional Japanese room, which was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed (including wifi and Apple TV!). We then spent the next week in one of the apartments which was just beyond luxury!

Amazing cooked to order breakfast and coffee/hot beverages were provided every morning. The restaurant and Tepanyaki bar in the complex are a must-do. There is also a great bar which often has live music just downstairs. 

Overall, the quality and convenience was exceptional , and the lodge managers (English and Japanese speaking) were hugely helpful with anything we needed. Will definitely stay again!
