Nishi-Izu is one of my favorite resort areas and have visited there a great number of times in my long life as there are many beautiful spots along the jagged sea coast, good beaches, clean water and fresh seafood. Mt.Fuji across the Suruga Bay presents, weather permitting, astonishingly beautiful sights. Tensodo ( in Japanese “天窓洞”) in Dogashima, a natural window in the cave’s roof provides a fantastic blue sea. It could beat blue cave in Capri, Glotto di Smeraldo in Amalfi and the similar in Malta. And yet most admiring is the sunset views along the coast particularly from Otago Beach, most popular spot for photgraphers.
 Close to Dogashima several good hotels exist all closely facing the ocean views. Tenyu is one of them and all the 20 guest rooms face the seaside and the islands. It is not a gorgeous but a clean and cozy hotel in many respects, easy approach and parking, efficient and kind services. Bath-rooms both in and out the house are very good, clean and have a good view. Dinner and breakfast are served in own guest room but almost in one lot unlike in case of luxury Ryokan. The meals were not bad but disappointing to those who reasonably expect good and fresh seafood. Sashimi (raw fishes) was terrible. It is a great shame for Izu fishermen. However, one could order special dishes such as “Funamori (sashimi set on a miniature fishing boat), abalone, lobster, etc. but prices are quite exceeding the expectation. Wine and Sake looked rather overcharged, too. No wonder my wife bought a very small plastic cup of soft cream near the wharf and it cost Yen 500. The prices must be set much dearer than even from the expensive Tokyo. This really reduces the attraction of travelers from town a long term. They should learn the situation in the Japan Sea side such as Niigata, Toyama, Fukui, etc. 
 Natural surrounding is super and one could find walking around very enjoyable.

A clean cozy hotel with a goog ocean view but !

We stayed here for two nights in July. We arrived at this hotel with high expectations. It's at the more expensive end of things and was one of the splurges of our Japan trip. I really don't mind paying a bit more for something special but I was really disappointed with this place and wouldn't stay here again. So the good bits... the location is breathtaking. BREATHTAKING. This is an unspoiled and surreal piece of coastline. Jagged cliffs popping out of the ocean right in front of the room, wild eagles soaring by... pretty good. You can sit in your room just staring out at the landscape for hours. We had a room on the top floor with a little balcony and the room was clean, basic sleep-on-the-floor stuff. The meals were brought to us by a lovely lady dressed in kimono, she was so nice to the kids who were just in awe of the bounty of food.  

My issue with this place was the staff and the misrepresentation of the hotel. We booked this place in the height of summer and selected this place for a number of reasons, one being, that it had a pool. When we got there the pool was empty. I was a bit annoyed about this because they shouldn't advertise a pool if they don't have one. I pointed this out to them, they admitted their mistake but that seemed to be the end of it. They didn't want to reduce our rate or upgrade our room or similar. Instead they made us sit in the foyer for over an hour with tired children while they handballed the issue to Bookings.com. who called me three or four times trying to sort it out. I don't even know why they were involved and neither did they.

In the end the hotel offered to drive us to another hotel miles and miles away that had a pool (which was relayed to me by booking.com). This ticked me off. We just wanted to go to our room in the hotel we booked. I wasn't about to make a big deal about the whole thing but it was all handled really poorly and with no professionalism. In the end they offered to take off a few yen a night (again this was relayed by bookings.com). I would also mention that the room we booked was not the room we received - did not mention this after the earlier experience.

The poor service and attitude didn't stop there unfortunately. They are VERY tight with their amenities. Everything has a cost, even things that normally would not have a cost even in simple establishments. If you want some ice? 500 yen. If you want to have a sing on the kareoke box? Yen. If you have a three year old in your room YEN. 

These are small things that cost the hotel nothing, but it leaves you with a sense that it's not a very generous establishment and when you're paying more than $700 a night you're paying for a sense of generosity. 

One more thing. The air conditioner in the room is VERY VERY loud. You need it on because you can't open the doors at night (no fly screen) which would have been lovely. If you turn it off the room gets really stuffy but if you have it on it's like sleeping next to a truck. Light sleepers beware.

We visited friends in Japan over the Thanksgiving Holiday and they booked us a night at the Hotel Tenyu. The experience and the hospitality was beyond belief. The view from our corner room was amazing. The onsen (hot spring) was relaxing and well deserved. Our server, Toshi a was the sweetest thing and tended to our every need. The hotel staff were gracious and attentive above and beyond. If not for our wonderful Japanese Family we would have never experienced this. I highly recommend!

Traditional Japanese Hotel

We stay here in our honeymoon in may 2014. Special thanks to Mr. Takahiro Suzuki! He made our honeymoon unforgetable by nice gifts from hotel, and very kindness. He was very kind to help us in all kind of information, that we need, also he is the only one who perfectly speeks english in this hotel.
Hotel is greate, and has the best location in Dougashima with wonderfull ocean view and rock view. It's 7 minutes walk from Izu-Dougashima busstop.
Japan breakfast and dinner are very tasty and contains 14-17 dishes, so it's even hard to try everything, and it's all is bringing to your room, after you wake up, and before sleep. Rooms are quite big with balcon, all made in Japan style. All staff is very helpfull. 
There is public and private onsen downstairs, separately to woman and man. One onsen inside and one outside so you can enjoy wonderfull views.
Also there are massage deviceses very helpfull after onsen. And you can buy fresh cow milk in drink device (that was very nice).So you can feel yourselg like at home. 
7 minutes from hotel you can find small museum (near the busstop), big souvenir shop and a lot of view point. Also there are some cafes and you can eat national fresh dishes.
So if you like to visit no so tourist place, enjoy nature and silence and feel a spirit of Japan thats the place for you.
How to get from Tokyo (JR station):

1. SHINKANSEN JR (KODAMI) from Tokyo station to the ATAMI station (35 min).
2. Transfer for the JR ITO LINE,or IZUKYU LINE bound for IZUKYU SHIMODA station (50 min). 
p.s. If you are using JR pass you will have to pay in addition 2200 Yen (one way) at the beginning or at the end of the trip (doesn't matter).
3. TOKAI BUS bound for MATSUZAKI DOUGASHIMA (55 min).
You will arrive at DOGASHIMA BUS Stop in 13:50pm

Best impressions in honeymoon Japan

We stayed 2 nights in this fantastic hotel.  The staff are very friendly and helpful though they spoke with limited English.   The room is large and has a fantastic view. The Onsen is of average size and has both indoor and outdoor facilities.  The food was delicious.  We were actually fortunate that we went there during the off peak seasons, not crowded and the weather was fantastic.
