Stayed here two nights while travelling through Japan. This is a great place to stay on Arimatsu with lots of historic charm. 

The host was so sweet and accommodating. He was frequently available in the guest house and was very apologetic when. He couldn't be there for a few hours. He gave great recommendations for food and sights around Arimatsu. When he learned that we were interested in Japanese crafts he suggested a trip to a pottery village called Tokoname that was one of the highlights of our trip. 

Stayed in the mixed dorm with my girlfriend and we had the place to ourself one night. There are small privacy screens between the beds. While there was no curfew all other guests were respectul. Noise was not a problem either at night or in the morning. 

The shared spaces and bathroom were very clean. The showers are in a separate small building in the backyard, with separate private stalls for men and women. The shower seemed new and was very clean.

I highly recommend staying in Arimatsu, especially if you are interested in traditional Japanese textiles. The guest house was very close to the Shibori Museum and some speciality Shibori shops. It is a nice respite from Japanese cities while being easy to get to.

Great place in Arimatsu!

I stayed in 4 different hostels on my recent trip to Japan, and Guesthouse Mado was by far the worst. The room itself is no better or worse than other places, but the husband and wife owners made it seem like they were doing me a favor letting me stay there, rather then treating me like a paying guest.
On one day, the wife came into my room at 10am you tell me to get out of the premises because it was "cleaning time." No where on the reservation site did it disclose I have to leave my room at a certain time. They seem to make up rules as they go along.
The owners established 11pm to 7am as "quiet hours," and yet they don't even follow their own rules: one morning they were using a blender at 6:40AM. On my final day there, the wife came in my room around 8am to turn off the air conditioner and open the windows--waking me up. Of the 4 accommodations I had during my stay in Japan, only 1 other place had rules for using the air conditioner--and they clearly established reasonably hours for when you can and cannot use it. Here at Guesthouse Mado, the wife just walks into your room whenever she feels like to turn your AC off and wake you up.

Worst accommodation I had in Japan

The owners of this guesthouse speak Japanese, English and Mandarin and are very friendly and helpful.  We stayed several nights, with a break in between to travel to Tokyo.  Our hosts were very helpful and suggested places we might be interested in.  Light meals are available, but we were also welcome to purchase our food at the local supermarket and eat in the dining room.  The rules of staying in a guesthouse were very clear (so as not to disturb other guests) and I would strongly recommend this as an affordable and interesting taste of Japanese culture.

Affordable, traditional Japanese guesthouse easy walk from Arimatsu station

This is terrific traditional Japanese accomodation sharing one of two tatami rooms and sharing one toilet, two sink areas, and two outdoor shower/baths with plenty of hot water, a pretty little garden with picnic table, and.a small cafe. The very interesting, personable, multi-lingual owner, Kazuhiro-San, enjoys sharing perspectives on travels, and maintains Mado's restful atmosphere. The neighborhood of Arimatsu is equally peaceful with lovely old store fronts for the nationally renowned beautiful shibori tie dye fabrics. For dinner I walked out for the best homemade udon noodles and locally grown tempura vegetables I've had in my fifteen years living in Japan, a place recommended by Kazuhiro-San. My breakfast at the inn was out-of-the-oven rolls, soup, and fresh ground coffee----perfect, and well worth 500yen. Of course, there isn't the privacy of a hotel room, but Mado is a comfortable rendition of what it was like to travel in a Japan from years gone by.

Quiet, traditional retreat, easy train ride from Nagoya's Kanayama

For the lovers of traditional Japanese house, Mado is a great choice when visiting Nagoya. Located at the historic quarter at Arimatsu, the calm atmosphere is totally different from the busy Nagoya city. And it takes only about 20 mins to get back to the downtown if needed.

The rooms are all share room and in Japanese style with tatami, simple and clean. It's a traditional wooden structure so of course sound insulation is not so good, but it won't bother too much if everyone is in the manner.
