The outdoor private onsen is amazing. Staff with limited English but willing to help. The booking system for the private onsen is  based on first come first serve, no reservation ahead so you have to keep calling front desk to check for availability....that needs to be changed. Other than that, I'd recommend it to those who enjoy traditional Japanese Ryokan.

We stayed for one night for a family of four.  The hotel Kose Onsen ryokan is quite worn and showing its age. The setting is beautiful and nature surrounds the building. However, the rooms are worn down, hallway and building is old. We ordered dinner and breakfast which was ample and delicious. Not for kids, they had trouble with the diversity of small dishes and tastes. I thought food was great, but not a good value for a family of four which was the most expensive night of our two week trip to Japan. The hotel recommended a taxi, which was 3000 yen. In the morning we went to the Shirotaki falls which was incredible.  I do not recommend this ryokan for families. A quiet couples get away for a night maybe if worn out retro fashion is your jam. But this is one of the most expensive regions of Japan and it was a very expensive night when food was included.  We didn’t appreciate the smoke.  Kitchen staff were very professional, but front desk staff felt stiff and inflexible.

Poor value 

The staff was very friendly and professional! The onsen (public and private) were clean and nice. The rooms could use a little bit of an update though.

a little bit far from the town,must drive to get there.there's no lift in the hotel.and the hotel has a curfew , you have to back to the hotel before 23:00

The photos look 30-40% better than the actual hotel. The baths are old and really dirty. The rooms are all smoking. The hotel hasn’t been updated in decades. If the price was $100-$150 per night I’d say maybe not a terrible deal. Otherwise I’d go somewhere else.

Nice location... but that’s it

This is a typical Japanese hotel. Some rooms are with futo but mine was luckily with classic bed. A small river is running just near the hotel and I can eat the noise of the water from my balcony... so peaceful. 
They have public (one for men, one for women) and 2 private outside onsen.

The room includes diner and breakfast. You can’t choose the food but it was really good. Maybe a little bit not enough for me : small starters and tempura, chicken (delicious !) and dessert. 

There is a bus at 100 meters of the hotel and you can go for 370 yens to a small but really original waterfall (see pic attached). 

Quiet place in the mountain 

This is where you come if you want an authentic Onsen experience. It is in a beautiful mountain location with authentic decor and food; and full of Japanese history and culture. The downsides are that you will need a car to get here and for day trips (it is a couple of kms into the mountains from Karuizawa), it is designed for Japanese tourists so there is little written or spoken English to guide your experience, and it could do with a bit of an update in the bathrooms as some of the fixtures are not in great order. However, it was truly a beautiful spot and really helped us embrace the more authentic Japan than touristy attractions.

Beautiful location and authentic experience

The environment is good. It has two private pool which is 40min for each section.It can be booked & get the key in the front desk.But the dinner set is very basic.

Nice staff👍 Not close to Karuizawa station but it is good for a night stay👍👍Took ard 15-20 mins by bus to the hotel.
