I chose Mandrem as i had to visit a temple in Pernem.Found Shankarz by the sea close to the beach and voila ! Shankarz is a very basic, budget hotel, biggest advantage is its just 2 mins from the beach.We got 2 AC rooms on the 2nd floor (no lift) with a sea view , not a huge sea view but yes you get to see the sea from the balcony, some trees around and some shacks.The room,bed and bathroom were clean.Service was good and the staff was polite. Manager Vibhor was very co-operative and he arranged the cab for us for local travel to Pernem.He owns the restaurant there and the breakfast was very good,bit over priced. But overall the food and transport was high on the cost.Mandrem is an extremely beautiful ,clean ,white sand beach far from the crowds.There are no food shacks on the beach. You will find some foreigners.The closest restaurants(and bar) to Shankarz are Junas 9 and Bed rock and food was good there.We spent much of the time at the beach and hotel.If its Christmas, do not miss the dance party at Blueberry Hill,Verna Plateau. Band Archies and Pure Magic performed and it was awesome. Shankarz by the sea is recommended.

Christmas in Goa!

Visiting Goa at it's best. Close to the beach (200m), restaurants, bars, shops etc., this hotel offers a 1 step up from the bamboo beach huts that are closer to the beach. Staff is cool and welcoming. Food the serve is excellent and always fresh. Rooms are simple but offer what you need.

Budget at it's best

After months of beach huts in Goa, I was delighted to stay at Shankarz and finally be in a place where the walls and ceiling are joined. May sound weird to those of you who haven't spent long periods in beach huts but there is a certain joy to seeing a room sealed from all the creepy crawlies outside. I am Australian so I'm accustomed to bugs and all things creepy but after a certain period of time even we Aussies can get fed up. 
Shankarz is only a 2 min walk to the beach and lovely leafy views on the upper floors. The rooms are very clean, sheets feel fresh and the floors are tiled. The whole place feels like it is either new or freshly renovated/painted. The balconies a are good size and I love that the double doors of most of the rooms are glass panelled so that you can see the outside world and they also make the rooms light-filled. 
We were there in off season (towards the end of season) so the prices were very reasonable. We took a fan room which was fine for us but there are air conditioned rooms as well.
The staff are very friendly lads which makes staying there more pleasurable. There is also a pleasant cafe but I can't comment on the food because we didn't have a chance to eat there. The lemon sodas were good though!
I've spent a lot of time in India over the years and, after being here almost 10 months in the last year, I have seen a lot of different types of Indian accommodation. Shankarz is my type of place. Simple but very clean with lovely staff, reasonable price and a good location. I love rooms with real walls & clean floors! The wifi was also pretty good strength and it even worked in our room on the first floor (fan rooms). The top floor may have water glimpses/views but we didn't get to the see those rooms. They at least have a lovely, green, leafy outlook.  
We were on a really tight budget being long term travellers (especially my friend) so we got a super good price of 600 rupees for a fan room because the season was almost over and most places were closing for monsoon. I imagine the price would be double or more in high season.

When you are over the novelty (& discomfort) of beach huts...

This place has a good location , being 3 minutes from the beach , but that is all its got going for it.
We booked what was advertised as a deluxe room & were shown into a large , stark windowless room with 2 beds pushed together for a double bed . When we complained we were moved to a slightly better room with a balcony , but it was very basic, bare light bulbs , dangerous wiring & broken toilet seat. The mattress smelt damp , we wouldn't have stayed if we hadn't booked it online. 
The whole place was run down , dirty stair cases . It wasn't a nice place to come back to at the end of the day.

Avoid !

First and foremost I must commend the utterly conscientious and hospitable staff at Shankarz. Unfortunately, our arrival was at the ungodly hour of 4 am, but despite the hour, we were met and politely shown to our spacious and neat room. On awakening and whilst sitting on our verandah, I was able to appreciate the pretty lawn and the garden which pleasingly faced our room, which (by the way) offered a partial view of the sea. And It is only a brief two-minute walk before you're on the beach and the inviting Arabian Sea. 
The restaurant at Shankarz was incredibly relaxing, with the option to recline in the low cushioned seats, which is perfect after a meal. The restaurant was not particularly busy when we were there, which was contrary to the excellent service, food and ambiance. We invited friends for food, two of whom were 4 months into an extended trip around india, another friend who spends the winter in north Goa and other friends from australia/england. By the way, we all love fish and Indian food (some wanted it spicy, others not so much) and the food was delicious, but above all you could taste how fresh it was, you could actually taste the sea! We had a massive king fish (cooked three different ways), tiger prawns (yummy!), rice, salad and fries. Also, the staff allowed me to plug in my phone so we could play our music. The restaurant was rarely busy and perhaps the reason for this was simply because it was off the main road (so no passing traffic, but quiet) and it is not directly on the beach. The sunrise bar and restaurant is closer to the beach, but the staff at sunrise are indifferent, the food is not as good as shankarz, the atmosphere is quite sterile and they play the same euro dance tunes very loudly, regardless of the time of the day-so no chilled sunset.

Overall I cannot recommend highly enough Shankarz. The food was great, they make the best coffee this side of naples (actuall real espresso!!). I forget to mention breakfast - which was the best I found. Fresh fruit juice, an actual full english with beans, hash browns, bacon, etc. Location was good and the price was reasonable. If you go and you love fish, do yourself a favour and eat there and say hi to Ranjit (head honcho), Joy (top guy/best service) and shamelfully I cannot remember another staff members name, but say hi. Namaste xxx
