The host Maria is so friendly and she really cares about her guests! The first she did when we arrived was giving us fruits and georgian wine which was way too nice! Even though she speaked no english she tried to explain us everything and she told us were to go in sighnaghi. I can only recommend this guest house, especially when you want to have a real georgian experience!

We three British middle aged guys are mid way through our three weeks exclusively in Georgia. This is our third visit to Georgia (July 2010 and August 2012 beforehand). We are here for the Kakheti Region's wine festival from Kutaisi via Tbilisi.

We had come to Sighnaghi on Monday 25/9/17 direct from Tbilisi in a booked taxi from the last Guest House Near Opera. We had originally planned to get a mashutka at 11:00 for 5 but the breakfast there was included so too good and much to refuse! We ended up checking out at noon and chatting over yet more wine offered by our hosts, then leaving it too late even for the 13:00 coach at 12:30 as the traffic was so bad!! On the way it was clear we would miss the (every two hour) mashutka to Sighnaghi so he offered to take us all the way for 100. A 107km journey. We agreed as he was sober and there were seat belts in his 80s LPG converted Merc saloon that kept on stalling on steep hills. It turned out that a  fellow travelling couple with loads of baggage made the same taxi trip for 40 total so we were 'done' in effect! 

After two hours on the main bumpy road, with occasional scary moments overtaking and playing chicken with oncoming cars whilst overtaking, we arrived at the scenic town. We had the name of the Guest House but there were two on the map of the same name!!! The driver asked various locals, struggled up the steep hills and eventually after a few wrong roads and three point turns we arrived at the correct Maria's GH at 14:40.

We were greeted by Maria herself and immediately presented on a table on the terrace with a litre of sweet red wine and 1/3l jug of drier Saperavi as well as a whole half litre bottle of Chacha as well as a large plate of grapes and melon too (their way of reducing hangovers!)

We were still reeling from the journey and had had our departure wine as we had left Near Opera GH! We were not quite up to more early afternoon drinking! 

The man of the house, Yugi, joined us in a toast with Chacha, it was 60%, green and flavoured with tarragon! Delicious but deadly! We discussed our plans with Yugi and he offered (as Is their way and extra business) to take us on a wine valley tour (7.5hrs) for 120 the next day. We accepted (I'm typing this as we drove in his good condition 90s silver Merc saloon along bumpy and winding roads). Then we had the sweet red wine, similarly potent in a wine way so we took our time after that, catching up with the net via their efficient wifi. The drier Saperavi wine was good too and all with a lovely view of the hazy valley. Eventually we got to our room (#3 I think) via the corridor by the kitchen through the lounge/tv/ironing room.

The room was long and big enough for three with a double and single bed, fan, radiator, bedside cabinet and small table and chair. The window faced a wall unfortunately so no view. The en-suite was a shower-room with a simple corner shower unit (no curtain), loo and sink with mirror. One bar of soap and toilet paper supplied, that was fine for us and three clean largish towels were on the bedside table. A central lamp lit up the shower-room (switch just inside the door) but no over mirror shaving lamp (as is usual in Georgia, that's why they mostly have beards).

The room had a simple central light cluster, no bedside lamps, with the switch just inside the door again whilst the table had a jug of water and glasses on it. It was all very clean with no dust balls or hair under the bed although I found some thin beeswax church candles in the corner, no big deal!

As we settled in the room, caught up with more of the net (good signal in bedroom) and thought about a wander and food, it became apparent that my friend was quite ill from all the leaving and welcome relatively early 'heavy' drinking! Maybe it was food from earlier or the night before but the noises from the loo were not encouraging! Dear TA monitors please please do not ask me to verify this as its source is not confirmed! We are in a very hospitable country where refusing drinks is rude! Guests are 'king' or 'queen' and treated well and generously, but some of us are just not used to it and cannot handle the alcoholic aspect! We refused this morning's offerings before our tour btw!).

Our other friend and I went for a wander at 19:00, checked out Pancho Villa for a different style of food so booking a table for three at 20:00 and wandered further to return to our ill friend at 19:30 to find him unwilling to go out and eat at all! We left him and returned, after a great (but not cheap) meal (only a bottle of corona each!) at 21:40 to feed him with the doggy bag of chicken mole and rice which he managed quite well. We caught up with the internet again and had an early night at midnight for once as 09:00 breakfast (10) and 10:00 tour (120) booked ahead. My single bed was lumpy & creaky single as is usual at our budget but I slept fine, although early morning kitchen noises preparing breakfast meant I was up at 07:30 to play, catch-up and review on my iPad!

The shower eventually got to a fairly stable hot water setting. The loo had a weak flush so needed a couple on occasion! The water pressure was good enough to jet out my razor after shaving.

I got to the terrace at 09:00 to find a Supra breakfast! The table had a spread of the following delicious food: fried aubergines, ajapsandali, bulgar wheat, tomatoe & onion salad, sliced cucumbers, cheese slices, shredded cabbage and beetroot salad, yoghurt, small preserved sweet damsons, red plum jam and candied melon

Fresh warm bread and omelette or fried egg was delivered to order as well as Nescafé with separate uht milk carton (which did not compliment the style!). All this in blazing sunshine with a great view! A large blind was drawn across half the table as the sun was so intense at 09:00!

All along Maria asked if we were happy, had enough and offered more. I politely refused the egg as there was just too much! It took an hour to dine in effect and was all very tasty! 

We then were technically late for the 10:00 tour as we had to pack ready for being dropped off at our next lodgings (Maria was fully booked) at Nato and Lado guesthouse.

As we prepared to leave wine was laid out on the table and we had to refuse politely as it was only 10:15! My friend discussed our plans and the wine route with Maria whilst Jugi waited in his car for us patiently.

We finally left at 10:40. I'm writing this review in the car, it is 11:40 after 52k  into our driving to our first stop at the palace and wine & chacha museums in Sinandali. 

I am now writing this in the car after our second winery visit. First museum/aristocratic/royal summer house had an English speaking guide and one glass wine tasting for 7 each. One European style white, two Georgian whites between the three of us. Good stuff but the Georgian style at 30 a bottle we passed! We wandered round the interesting house/museum (luckily catching an English speaking guide) and then explored the garden, leaving at 13:00.

Next stop 100m along was Sumi winery. A jolly young guide round the museum of ancient artefacts and then a free wine tasting of two European style wines with local style wines at 5 each, although she said 100ml per glass it was much less so we felt a little short changed. We struck up conversation with fellow brit travellers and it was obvious that she was getting agitated that we were not finishing and moving on to buy wines in the shop (which proved quite pricey the brit couple said in their investigating). We left at 14:00 after about an hour there.

Onwards we went to Telavi where we wandered around a veteran plane tree, old fortress walls and some of the OTT restored old buildings. We left there at 15:15 to drive across the valley to the Gremi Castle and museum, then the Nekreti Monastery via a minibus up the side of the steep hillside.

Our next wine shop was the Kindzmarauli Corporation Wine House where we spent a good hour tasting wines at a good price of 2 per wine (ended up as 6 each) then having a quick personal guided tour by the same wine guide. She had a group of forty Chinese tourists to entertain when she had finished our relatively easy going tour! I also saw that many wine tasters had left whole (but small, wine samples in their glasses, some untouched, so down they went, minesweeping again to avoid an offensive situation! We bought two bottles of the cheapest (14 each but still good) wine there, including one for our driver as we were taking longer than planned.

Then he took us to a more local and family run winery, Numisi, in Velitsikhe which was quite an experience, with a quirky museum and tasting raw wine noise from an ancient qvevri to sampling some wine, chacha and grapes at a very good price of 5 each!

With all the wine in us we made our way back to Sighnaghi in the dark, two hours later than planned and we were delivered directly to our new Guest House Nato & Lado which we had booked in the morning. We gave our Zuri an extra 20 on top of the original 100 as he had done such a good job (considering that was a two hour taxi from Although very good it did not match Maria's welcome or generosity! 

Numisi Wine Cellar Museum in Velitsikhe 



Very hospitable family hosts, great views, welcome, breakfast and farewell. Husband's wine tour thorough, fun and gvfm.

We booked this guesthouse because we read lots of enthusiastic reviews on a booking website. 
Our double room was basically the size of a single room, just a bit wider than the double bed itself. There was no space for a bedside table and just enough space to squeeze into the bathroom. 
One bulb only in a three-bulb lamp (no other light in the room).
The bathroom was tiny, with ugly plastic board over the washbasin. The plastic towel rack came off the wall; nowhere to hang the clothes and toiletries. 
The walls were thin and we could hear other people talking.  
We stayed 2 nights; no room service while we were there.
A short while ago we stayed at Sighnaghi at another place which was much more value for money. We will not book again.

Disappointing


The Guest House Maria is located on the edge of town next to the Tourist Track (city Wall type) , with a splendid view of the Alazani Village and Cacausian mountain. I was amazed to see the Snow covered Cacausian mountains from the common balcony of guesthouse.
 
I stayed for 6 days,
During my stay it remained by best place.

Her Son in law Zura picked us up from Tblisi, he is really very good person and very safe driver.
 
Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Madam Maria, who doesn't speak English, but manages to communicate effectively . She provided us with complimentary wine, coffee, Tea , fruits fresh Cheese and fresh jam. It was the best welcomes I've ever received.

The room was very cousy the beds for nice and clea . The toilet was good.
There was facility of hot water and Heater in  thw room.
it was a chilling wather and from 3rd day its was raining heavily the conditiom was almist 0-3 degrees, the heater was amazing and did the job very well.

She has a very good dining area with a big Piano as well.

As we are muslims it was impossible to find a resturant not serving pork and wine in Georgia/Sighnaghi, hence we became Vegeterian and i had struggled already for  3 days in tbilisi finding a good veg resturant , 
On special request Madam Maria agreed to cook us the Lunch and Dinner for a reasonable price. 
Initially I booked her guesthouse only with Breakfast .
 I will always be grateful to her for this heart touching gesture we were almost on the verge of starvation and a helping shoulder from her re energized our Trip.
She took care of our all needs, 24hr hot Tea and cofeee and Hot water and heater  was available.

Her Son in law Zura helped us made plans of Tour at a very reasonable price we went to Gombari Pass, Telavi, David Gareja and in near by areas like Bodbe Monastery, Living Roots Horse Stable etc

He dropped us back to tblisi at reasonable price.

Madam Maria, her daughter and Grand Daughters became our Family,  one of the best freinds of my Infant and we would easily realx by giving the infant to them  and they would happily play with the child

I am sure they are Angels disguised in Human Body and clothes, they are very helpful people and understanding  of others.
