We spent a night at "La Grange de St Hilaire" last week-end, to visit the beautiful French department of the Aisne.

We were warmly welcomed by Dimitri and his wife, a very nice young couple.
The cottage is an old barn that has been nicely restored with recycled materials.  The five bedrooms are tastefully furnished with antic and regional items found here and there.

Besides the night, the cottage only provides breakfast, but can recommend good restaurants in the area, fitting any budget.

Dimitri only wants to help and burns the midnight oil to ensure his guests do not miss anything (I asked him if he could find fresh raw milk for me for breakfast and the next morning, Dimitri brought 2 liters of it on our table).

We recommend this out of time cottage for a romantic getaway!
Also do not forget to visit the groves in the area, these are really typical of this region.

Out of time...

We stayed at La Grange for one night in July. The converted barn is very charming; our room was spacious and the bed is HUGE. Despite the head and footboard which can be annoying for tall people, I think most guests would still have plenty of room to stretch!
The breakfast room is equally charming with peaceful views across the garden and beyond.
We had a great stay yet somehow I am left wondering how I should rate the property. We arrived at 6pm (the time from which you can check in) and were met with a locked door to the barn. On a summer evening it was nice to take in the surrounding view... but somehow I also think of arriving on a dark evening with little light (we came back from a late dinner in the dark so I know how dark it was!) and being met by the locked door, and no obvious invitation to alert the owner. Once you are in everything is so nice, but there's something about the "moment of arrival" that is so important to me... and clearly those first five minutes have left an impression on me. I think I will give La Grange 4 out of 5 and hope that this was just a timing thing that day.

Something different. You'll love it... I think. Or not?

This was our second stay, my wife and I stayed 3 years ago and my wife has been nagging me ever since to go back. La Grange de Saint Hilaire is perfect in a beautiful quiet area of France. The 5 rooms are all different, quirky in a good way with great style. 
The breakfast is outstanding which is presented lovely…..croissants, French stick, mixed nuts, yoghurt, berries, chocolate pudding, fresh apple juice all very good quality and plentiful  served by the friendly owner. 
My wife and I have been on hospitality for 30 years working in some great famous hotels and recently teaching. We had a long conversation on the journey home about where this sits in our top 10 places to stay, pound for pound it has to be number 1.

It’s become our favourite place to stay ever, just love it…perfect!!!

We booked via Wonderbox which showed on its web site the possibility to stay in a a number of charming rooms in the barn.  When we arrived the owner informed that the barn was full and that we had to stay in a self-catering apartment which is separate.  This apartment had no charm at all and certainly did not look like the rooms in the barn as on the website.  We wanted to speak to the owner the next morning to inform about our disappointment, but were told by a lady who is hired to prepare the breakfast for the guests, that he is very busy and could only come if very urgent so we claimed for an urgency.  The owner informed that if we are unhappy customers, we had to complain to the Wonderbox organisation and that such was not his problem although he perfectly well understood; and thereby the self-catering flat was more expensive than the rooms (indeed the flat was at Eur 80 and the rooms range between Eur 60-70 and note that you pay Eur 99 for the Wonderbox, and get a tarte maroille purchased from the local grocery in the fridge of your rooms + 2 beers - don't think that the owner will have the hospitality to share something home-made with you).  We had the impression that he had a well rehearsed speech when responding to our disappointment.  We then complained to the Wonderbox organisation who contacted the owner who informed the organisation that there were rooms available in the barn and that we just had to ask for it. Also he informed the Wonderbox organisation that with the flat we benefited from a private garden: very useful when you cannot arrive before 6:00 pm in the dark and in the winter and a television in the room. Other customers showed us the charming room wherein they staid and understood our disappointment when we showed our room.I think the way we have been treated by the owner to be unacceptable...happy to cash in on Wonderbox customers and that's it...never mind that the breakfast is delicious and the room where the lady serves the breakfast to be full of charm.

Victim of its success - unacceptable

We saw the report about La Grange already last year on TV but Bly made it now. And what a surprise. This totally renovated and converted old farm is a true heaven. The owners have spend a lot of time to create this unique place. The rooms are all unique and completely in wood with beautiful decoration. The breakfast is the best we have found in all B&Bs all over the country. The owners are very friendly well coming people and we will certainly come back.
