During our stay at Hosteria del Rio the staff was very friendly.  I would rate this hotel higher except for several reasons.  First during our stay several of us had multiple people in the rooms but it seems like house keeping could never get the correct amount of towels for the rooms. We constantly had to see about getting more towels.  Second,  the wi-fi was always up then down (more down) and VERY slow.  

Group Trip

We had group of 10 that stayed for 2 nights at Hosteria del Rio in Jan-11. Overall our stay was OK - not great but not bad either. We stayed at Hosteria dR because we have friends living nearby and to be close to the Sangolqui market.

A few comments -
1.) Hotel is pretty dated. Sort of the style of an older Best Western that needs updating. Not really comparable to various nice hacienda's we stayed in all around Ecuador.
2.) Rooms, bathrooms were large and clean - so OK
3.) Breakfast - not a lot of choices. They will cook eggs, etc for you upon request
4.) Service - staff was friendly, but spoke no english - a bit of a problem but we managed. You will need as a minimum some rudimentary spanish speaking to communicate with staff.
5.) The accommodation pricing was very reasonable.
6.) Very much a 'locale' hotel - definitely off the non-Ecuadorian travelers radar screen

Interesting side note - hotel has its own bull ring which (we were told) have performances. We did not see the ring in action.   

If you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel near Quito, and you speak spanish and are OK with an older 'best western', locale, type hotel you will do fine at Hosteria del Rio.
