A friend and I just returned from our stay at Hacienda San Martin in the Nono Valley of Ecuador. It was our 3rd stay there in 3 years .That should begin to tell you how wonderful this place is. 
     The scenery in the valley, backed by the Andes Mts, and volcanic peaks is still spectacular every time. The cabins are super comfortable with grand vistas from the oversized windows and very nice modern amenities. The value of a hot shower in Ecuador cannot be overstated. Of course, you receive a hot water bottle to warm your bed here every night. (I am going to buy one for my house now.)
But it is always the family that is the reason to return.
     This family has so much heart and each member has something special to offer you if you open yourself to them. Spanish certainly will enhance your visit and add to the depth of your experience but is not necessary.
     Maggi, the mom, is an accomplished chef who clearly enjoys sharing her passion for cooking with her guests. The food is excellent and plentiful. Lunch and dinner are 3 course meals. Her soups are sooo good. The desserts will leave you craving them for weeks after you return home... especially the wild blackberry ice cream and the pineapple brulee. Breakfast is a buffet of delicious in season fruit, granola with yogurt...the real kind... fresh fruit juices, cheese, ham, bread and rolls, eggs made to order and coffee or tea. The mango and papaya in particular are a great way to start your day.
     Belen, Francisco and Veronica, their adult children, come from Quito to help their parents when they have guests. They speak English. They are some of the brightest, warmest and welcoming people I know. They obviously learned these qualities from their parents.
     Javier, the dad, has become my philosophical "Guru" and as always is ready to share his thoughts on life and how to live a better and more full life. I always come home with new ideas for changes to make in my everyday life after spending time talking to and listening to him. He is a very special person with an interesting world view and life experiences. I am so grateful that he chooses to spend time sharing with us.
     Be sure to spend a few nights here and go there on at least one weekend day.  The town is only open for business Saturday and Sunday, and you definitely need to walk through town and have Blackberry empanadas.  When you get back consider going horseback riding with Francisco or Javier and take in the slower pace of life in the valley.
     Hacienda San Martin is a peaceful, totally relaxing stay with some of the best people i have ever met. You will love your time there just soaking in the beauty all around you. This family will give you their kind and caring attention and also their hearts if you let them.
     I am so lucky to call these people my friends. They have changed my life for the better.

A very special place, hidden in a spectacular valley, close to Quito.

I traveled in four provinces for birding. This was one of the loveliest places we stayed. The setting is beautiful, the cabins are comfortable, the food was wonderful (oh how I loved our hot chocolate), and the few minutes / daylight we had there provided productive birding including a lifer. If you want to get away or be positioned for great birding hotspots, give this place a try. I loved it.

Lovely Stay

I am so grateful to have been able to visit Hacienda San Martin again. I was here for 5 nights in 2022 and fell in love with the valley. the food and especially the family. (See my review for last year on trip advisor "The Door is Always Open" or San Martin's website}.
 I could not imagine never seeing these people again, so I included 2 nights in my return trip to Ecuador this January. I was not disappointed. It is located fairly close to Quito, but it is like going to a different world in this valley. The peace and quiet is so welcomed after the city. 
We arrived on New Year's Eve Day. and had a fantastic New Year's Eve celebration. We started with drinks at 8"30 followed by a delicious buffet dinner with the family. Lucky for us we were the only ones staying there for the holiday even though they have 3 wonderful, cozy, comfortable cabins. Then we danced, laughed and just had a great time talking until midnight... when the excitement began outside.
 They burned a paper maiche character, which is the tradition in Ecuador and we each jumped over the fire. They did not need to include us in their family dinner or festivities, but they did because they are so warm, kind, and loving.
We rode horses the following day, which i highly recommend. The horses are well trained and the scenery in the Nono Valley is beyond description...green, green, green and spectacular. It is worth staying here just for the incredible views they have from all the rooms and the dining area.
Speaking Spanish here will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the family but is not necessary because their kindness translates in their actions with the guests. and there is some English. I will always treasure the conversations i have had with Xavier, the father, and Francisco his son. They both shared a lot about their lives and philosophy of how to have a good life and what is truly important.
So do not hesitate to book a cabin. There are only good experiences here with a family that truly knows how to show their guests Ecuadorian hospitality.

We felt so welcomed.....Again!

We stayed in Hacienda San Martin for two nights. The rooms are well decorated and clean, the view is beaufiful, the owners have a innate sens of hospitality, the food is fresh and delightful. We much appreciated the activities, like horse ride and hikking as well as discovering the farm's day to day life. Thank you very much to the whole family owning Hacienda San Martin for such a great experience! Very nice memories of our trip in Ecuador.

Great experience !

Our driver delivered us from the airport midday to the idyllic valley of Nono to Hacienda San Martin. We had seen the photos on their website and still we were blown away by the sheer beauty of the green everywhere and how gorgeous the valley area was. It was love at first sight.
 The view from our cabin looked overf acres and acres of pastures and dairy farms, 2 volcanoes and the Andes. It doesn't get more scenic than this. It is spectacular. During our stay we spent a lot of time just gazing out at the view and enjoying the peacefulness.
.The windows in the cabins are floor to ceiling so you have a fantastic view everyday from your bed when you wake up. There were 3 super comfortable beds and staying here i had the best sleep i have had in years . There is a beautiful large modern bathroom with excellent hot water. In one end of the cabin there is a cozy sitting area with a woodstove that they light for you each night while you are having dinner so you are toasty when you return to the room..plus a hot water bottle to warm the bed. 
We stayed for 3 nights , traveled  for 2 weeks and then returned for our last 2 nights. The service here is excellent. They drove us to our next destination and also to a reserve on our last day. We needed covid tests the day before we left and they arranged to have a person from a lab in Quito drive out to us...saving us lots of money driving back and forth to Quito plus the stress of looking for a lab by taxi in a big city. We were so grateful because it meant we could go hiking in the morning and back in afternoon before the test .
One day we rode into Nono and through town on their horses with Francisco and Xavier and returned riding around the whole valley for 4 hours. Again spectacular  and relaxing. We also went on a walk with Xavier around their property identifying plants and  learning about the history of the farm. He is a fascinating, very philosophical, and warm-hearted man. We had several long conversations with him in Spanish that made me rethink how to live my life. I am so grateful for meeting and spending time with him.
And the food...oh my! Every meal was super delicious , inventive and plentiful. Really was a highlight of the stay as well. he desserts were amazing and i am still craving them.
But, the best part of Hacienda San Martin is the entire family that takes part in running the hacienda. They are all wonderful hosts who made us feel comfortable, well cared for in every way, and welcomed from the minute we arrived. When we returned for our last 2 days it was like gong to visit old friends. We adore this family and hope  to return one day. Xavier said the "door is always open" to us and it was genuine. We feel very lucky to have found Hacienda San Martin and to have stayed with such a wonderful family.

We had the most amazing day on the farm! We were welcomed with an absolutely delicious breakfast, horseback riding with gorgeous views, back to the farm for another amazing meal and quality time talking with the owners and learning more about them and Nono. Experience of a lifetime!

Amazing!

We stayed in the Hacienda San Martin for two nights. The rooms are beautiful and immaculately clean. The views are spectacular. The owners are a lovely family who went out of their way to ensure our stay was memorable. The meals were delicious if not amazing. The activities proposed, from milking the cows, to long walks, cycling, horse riding, all organized by Francisco and his sister, were perfect for all our family, with our 2 adolescents of 18 and 15. They both speak excellent English and are very knowledgeable about their farm and nature. The attention went as far as providing hot water bottles and lighting the stove in our room in the evenings. A memorable part of our holiday in Ecuador. Javier ended our stay by giving our adolescents very interesting discussions on Ecuador on the drive back to Quito. Thank you so much! Fabulous!

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Hacienda San Martin!  Francisco picked us up from the airport for our drive to the Hacienda.  We arrived to the property later in the evening in very foggy weather, but were promised an amazing view in the morning and we weren't disappointed!  Nono Valley is stunning and the Hacienda is in a perfect spot on the hill to appreciate its beauty.  The cabin we stayed in was very spacious and comfortable.  We loved the wood stove for the chilly nights and the giant picture window where we could sit and enjoy the amazing view.  Francisco, Belen and their parents were outstanding hosts and they made us feel like we were part of the family!  The food was excellent and the service was very attentive.  We enjoyed a horseback ride, milking the cows and leisurely walks around the property to see the horses, owls and llamas.  This was our last stop on a busy two week trip to Ecuador, and this was the perfect way to end the trip and relax before returning to the "real world".  They even brought us hot water bottles and hot chocolate to our cabin to stave off the rainy weather.  It was a perfect, cozy retreat and we couldn't have asked for a better experience.  We hope to be back soon!

Pure Relaxation in the Nono Valley!

We've spent 2 nights at the Hacienda St Martin on our way back from the Galapagos island. We felt very well looked after in this family-run farm. We did horse riding, biking to the village and walking around the hilly property, accompanied by our host Fransisco who taught us a lot of things about his region and his passion of horses - including how to ride them. The room was very roomy and the amenities and service were better than most of what we have experienced in Ecuador (not to mention excellent food). If you have a few days to spare away from the business of Quito it is the place to go.

Nice getaway from Quito

We spent 2 days in Nono on January 2016 for our Hony Moon Trip and enjoyed it a lot. We recomand it for anybody who is looking for an wonderfull place in the contryside with a warm welcoming. Many thanks to all the familly for your welcoming !
