I really enjoyed my stay at Hostal Yumbo Imperial.  I had a private room away from the street, so it was very quiet (fortunately other guests were not noisy).  Host Mario was very friendly and helpful, which was the biggest plus.  Security was well maintained inside the hotel, though we were repeatedly warned about tourists needing to be careful with belongings outside in the area.  But excellent location for visiting tourist sites in Old Town.   Basic accommodation, but excellent value for the budget traveler.  Only downside was low water pressure and no food service available, however the kitchen, refrigerator, and microwave is available for guests to use.  I   would definitely stay here again.

Excellent owners and staff. Made me feel part of the family. Great advise and help with directions taxis etc. Cheap as chips and very close to centre.

We stayed 4 nights, 2 rooms, reasonably priced.  Mario, Illiyana, Yves and Jorge were lovely people and very helpful for our first trip to Ecuador.  The location was excellent, with a great view of the city from the upper floors.  Perfect for backpackers.  The mani/pedi 2 doors down was superbly done and excellent value – highly recommended.

This hostel is a bit Spartan but there is a good balance between price and service offered. The staff is super friendly and the location is very central. You can easily walk from here to everywhere in the old town.

We stayed in the Yumbo for several nights. Main reason for us was the price and the location, as it is very much in the historic centre of Quito in walking distance of shops and others.

The hostel is rather easy built, i.e., it has ok beds (160cm) but not the most comfortable ones we had.
It‘s all very clean and the bathrooms are getting cleaned daily.

The only bad point is the kitchen: it‘s very small so that a maximum of 2 people can be in the kitchen at the same time. Given that the hostel can host up to approx. 50 persons, there is no chance at all that all people can cook something in more or less a reasonable period of time.

However, given the low price that‘s acceptable.

We stayed here for 4 nights and enjoyed the place. So close to the Plaza Grande and La Rhonda. Very clean and owners are lovely. We had a room on the top (4th) floor so didn’t have much noise but walls are very thin. Kitchen is tiny so had to wait to make breakfast and tad frustrating having to get let in and out (front door is always locked). 
Not a social place but people are friendly. Mix of families and people of all ages and ethnicities.

Small friendly hotel in Old Town Quito

Great little find!

We stayed here for 3 nights when we first arrived in Quito. I always like to consider pros and cons of each place we stay so see below for what I think is a relatively objective view on the place. 

Pros:
- friendly staff
- good location
- clean rooms
- One English speaking manager who was very helpful 
- our room was big (after asking to move rooms)
- price wasn’t bad

Cons:
- the first night our room was small. No windows to the outside. The bathroom smelt horrific and clearly they had an issue with the drains. Above the door where a small window to the corridor should have been, the glass was missing
- it was very noisy. All three nights we heard people talking or watching TV late into the night 
- the kitchen is tiny and only one person can cook at a time
- no free water (every where else we have stayed has offered free drinking water)
- the showers didn’t always work and the flow would sometimes get cut off mid-shower. The drains smelled bad in both rooms and the smell permeated into the rooms as the bathrooms were not sealed off at the top (no secrets in their bathrooms!)
-the beds were small. I’m not a big person and neither is my wife, and we still felt cramped in their ‘double’ beds

In conclusion, would I stay at Yumbo again? Probably, but just for one night, and mainly because of the friendly staff and good location. 

An OK place for a couple of days

We stayed here for 3 nights.

The area:
It’s in the historic centre which we read was a great place to stay. Once we got there we were repeatedly told it is not safe to walk at night. In the daytime locals were even walking clutching their bags to their fronts. If it used to be safe, it isn’t anymore.

The hostel:
One of the guys at reception spoke great English and helped out, when he wasn’t on duty it was difficult to communicate.

Pros:
It felt clean.
Good advice from the English speaking guy.
The shower was great.
Towels included.

Cons:
The bathroom was open from eye level into the corridor, so the shower and toilet didn’t feel very private.

Side note:
The famous road La Ronda was pretty much deserted except for waitresses descending on you to get you into their empty establishment. It wasn’t worth it, we turned around and went back to our hostel.

Review of hostel and area

Good for Back-Packers; the staff Mario/Illiyana (owners), Yves and Jorge very friendly and most helpful. Yves spoke fluent English and all were very accommodating all our whims. The Pedi/Manicure next door is excellent ($5, please tip generously); Mario even arranged a massage for us; more a rub/oil all over (1H/$20); their friendliness made you feel like Family! walking distance to Historical churches. Safe Hotel. (Quito-you may require a 'gas mask'-car/bus exhaust!)
