The hotel is full of drunk russians, there is russian music all the time. Forget the drinks menu, you can get pina colada, cuba libre or bear. The funny thing is that staff leave the hotel with big bags of bottles every night. We didn’t give tips on the first night in reception, so we didn’t get any proper service, for example every time we asked to use the phone from reception, they said it was not working (the phone is charged per minute, it’s not free). You even need to give tips to get the cheese on the burger! Everybody selling fake cigars illegally. The entertainment man by the pool came to our table, sit down without asking, and started explaining how rich we were and that cubans are good people in heart just poor.

The room was not clean, cockroaches everywhere. If you leave tips, you can get at least new towels.

Worst experience ever - avoid

Our air Canada vacation rep told us this was the worst resort in Cuba AFTER we got there. Please save yourself the disappointment and don’t book. We managed to make the best of our vacation because hey we were out of the snow but it was far from what we had imagined. There are no drink options never has the ingredients to make pina coladas margaritas daquaeies mojitos etc. So Your choices are beer or rum punch. No milk for coffee or toliet paper in rooms. Not to mention our room had dirty cutlery and butter packets in it when we arrived and clearly had not been cleaned. Rooms also had cockroaches and doors did not lock properly due to broken locks and we were told the whole week someone would come repair is but never did. As I said we were trying to make the best of it so on the 3rd day we made the decision to no longer ask for things because that only annoyed us and brought our mood down. Our beds only had a sheet on it so we asked for a blanket - no luck out of blankets. We asked for help with the tv one afternoon- told that the tv doesn’t work. We received the complimentary bottle of water that was advertised to be left in our room daily 2 of 7 days and when we asked the front desk we were told the water shipment didn’t come.  No clean towels the entire 7 day’s. The majority of washrooms in the public areas don’t have doors that lock so get used to walking in on and being walked in on. I much preferred to use the washroom in my room but with a never working elevator and 7 floors that wasn’t possible. It seemed like no one respected the place and we found ourselves picking up others trash on the beach/pool. Besides a few exceptions staff where horrible, rude and dismissive but honestly can’t blame them when they have to tell people no all day. I also witnessed a male staff videotaping girls in swimsuits on his cell phone but the real piece de resistance was when a member of our group was sexually assaulted by the cook at the snack bar. The cook asked to kiss her ass but was told no and she offered a hug instead to which he forcefully bent her down and her bit her ass. None of our complaints where taken seriously and we got a lot of “this is cuba” THIS IS NOT CUBA! If you want to experience true Cuban hospitality keep looking!

They are rude, the hotel is dirty, the dinner plates in the buffet have flies and dirt on them. The elevators are filthy and not taken care of. We asked for a roll of toilet paper three times and no one came up to help. Checkout they asked for our pool towels back, we kept them in our room and went back upstairs to get them and they were gone. The hotel charged us 40 CAD for pool towels when we knew they were in our room the night before check out. The hotel is full of pushy Russians who think they are entitled to everything. The people in the next room were so loud we had to shut our balcony door and turn on the AC just to get some sleep. Worst first time experience to Cuba ever!

Worse Experience Ever!

I have been travelling to this resort for the past 7 years and every time I leave I cannot wait to return.  As the closest resort to the airport you arrive quickly to enjoy the hospitality and the beach.  In this world where there are so many options as to where you can spend your vacation time and dollars I highly recommend this property.  It is not a 5 star property but I can assure you if you say please and thank you (Por Favor and Gracias) and tip for service you will have a 5 star experience.

Always Exceeds My Expectations

I am booked at this resort for the 13th year in a row. The price is right , have great beach, ocean and hot weather. The staff are amazing, they make you feel like you are home!  Great pools, bars buffets and a la Cartes! The only problem booking now is I have to wait till the beginning of February to return! Great value for the money!

Amazing holiday everything was perfect from check in to check out, all staff are a credit to hotel, big shout out to aniel in coffee bar great guy spaeks good English and is very funny, pollo and hector superb bar tenders, Casablanca is a fantastic waitress in buffet restaurant, theres a girl who works in lobby bar who is fa
ntastic also forget her name unfortunately, lobby bar is 24/7 so your never thirsty, free shuttle bus into town daily plus theres a sightseeing tour you can do for free, taxi to Beatles bar/ calle62 10 peso highly recommend although theres plenty of entertainment in hotel, I loved it and I will return,  thankyou puntarena, muchas gracias.

Amazing holiday 

Puntarena &Playa Caleta is the resort we like to go! It's an old hotel but kept clean and everytime we go, there is improvement. The staff is friendly and really nice. Mercy Garcia director of public relations will go out of her way to make you feel welcomed!  Bania Moreno our housekeeper is just the BEST! José Antonio Alfonso the barman of Cascada Bar treats you like family and José Angel of the Las  Palmeras Coffee and Bar will try his best to accomodate you with a smile!  Natalia who keeps the lobby spotless is very sweet! Katia from the Chinese restaurant  is attentive and nice! Lazaro from the Italien restaurant serves you with class and a great smile! What makes this resort a nice place to go is the great view of the ocean (if your room is on that side) access to the two hotels, and the best staff ever!

Very nice vacation everytime!

If you are Canadian, this is not the resort for you. The lobby is too dark at night, the room is clean for the most part, there was blood on one of our pillows when we arrived but other than that, room was well kept but run down and definitely could use some renovations. The rooms lack lighting, especially in the bathroom, having no lighting in the shower. The shower is so tiny you are hitting your elbows on the curtain and on the wall. Only one of three elevators worked in one building, 5-10 minute wait for the elevator every time. Ignorant guests and staff always forced their way on to the elevator, even when full and already at capacity. 

The staff are HORRIBLE. They are very ignorant, we never got service at any meals, always had to get our own drinks. Staff at the bar are the worst, we were given dirty looks when we didn’t know what we wanted the second they asked. Whenever we did get drinks from the bar they were almost always warm When in line at the buffet, Russians jump in front of you and will push you out of the way. The staff do not care about you unless you are Cuban or Russian. The front desk staff are useless and struggle to give you basic direction. No matter where you are on the resort, the staff are ignorant. 

Of the two pools, one is nice but there is never enough seating, the other was constantly green.  Towel service is complicated and they club house staff are also very rude. The beach is beautiful, however the sand is very rough and there is a lot of litter around the huts. There is a crazy amount of sand fleas and we all ended up covered in huge, itchy bites after only two days at the beach. 

Booking with Holasun, we were given a free excursion, we booked it and were told to be at the door for 8:30, waited from 8:20-9:30 and the bus never showed up. The resort provides a shuttle bus into the market, however the bus was overcrowded and drove right past the market and dropped us off at a random location. When trying to book another excursion, we waited two hours to meet with the representative who never showed up. In the end, we gave up and went to book with a different company, and they basically told us no and that we couldn’t go on the excursion on the day we wanted.

And as for the food, disgusting. You will want to bring snacks. There is the Puntarena and the Caleta side, each having their own buffet. We found the Caleta side was better for breakfast and dinner, and the Puntarena side better for lunch. Options were limited, with the same exact food for every meal. My boyfriend found a piece of metal in his potatoes at lunch. The only decent food was the omelette station for breakfast and the pasta bar for dinner. The tables were always dirty and the staff didn’t seem to care. Overall, the buffet food is edible, but pretty gross. Stay away from the pool grill/snack bar. We ordered cheeseburgers and got a tiny piece of meat and a cube of cheese on a bun or a piece of bread. As i took a bite of my cheeseburger i felt something in my mouth and pulled out a huge plastic string (pictured below) that was weaved through the bun of my burger. so disgusting. 

I would advise anyone to keep looking and spend some money for a better resort!

my best vacations in this hotel in Varadero, excellent service ... but I want to thank especially Neliza wowo, the best of all. He made me feel like family ... his attention his drinks the best Cuban mohos, a smile, You are the best

Mis mejores vacaciones

We had a great time. Our room maid Tona (I am not sure of her exact name/spelling) was amazing and friendly.  We stuck with the buffet since we could come/go on our own timing, and did not want to watch the time for the specialty dinners.  We were disappointed that the beach bar and swim up bar have been closed down.   This is our second time at this resort and we found that it is clean, close to Veredaro and most of the staff are very friendly. We would go back to this place.  The beach here is beautiful, although the resort doesn't clean it.  When we go in the morning, we usually need to remove plastic cups etc. from the night before.
