You need a car or you will have to walk a lot. It is close to Caburni which is beautiful waterfall. The food at the restaurant wasnt very good but the place is quite. The better restaurant Los Helechos is a long walk but better food. Better to have a car. At the information center for $10 cuc per person including transportation and lunch at the restaurant we booked trips to Guanayara, El Cubano. Wish we had book El Nicho in advance and Cayo Las iguanas. The air is pure and weather very nice.

Not bad for the price

Need to go with group tour or private; we paid $60 and split the cost. Takes 4 hours. Nice ride up the mountain. Great view of valley or area below. At end reach hiking area; first part easy and nice, then if you wish to head down to see the waterfall....well, think twice. Hard, steep, poor path...but some do it. Then go to coffee shop where you can try out one of 50 different ways of making a REAL GOOD CUP OF COFFEE.

Nice place to visit; mountains, park, view, hike

First of all, this is not the "Complejo Topes de Collantes" this is the "Hotel Los Helechos".
Located just around the corner from the Batista-built Kurhotel Escambray on an impossibly steep access road, this 50s timewarp hotel originally built to house soldiers on holiday has both a main accommodation block and then smaller blocks of bungalow rooms on a site containing numerous other random buildings.
The room itself was perfectly clean and functional with good water pressure in the shower, working air conditioning and a balcony to relax on. The small bar in the lobby area serves delicious Mojitos amongst other drinks, for less than £2 with the chatty barman always keen for a natter.
Moving out of the main block and walking through the smaller bungalow blocks, one finds the "Games Room". Complete with an original 1950s American bowling alley, two ping pong tables and a pool table so worn and patched that it looks like a camouflage top, this is the place to relax in the evenings. Look out for Osvaldo, who seems to run the games room and his friend Joel, both eager to challenge guests at pool or talk over some Havana Club. There is also a slightly murky looking swimming pool which is host to a bizarre pool party in the afternoons and a mythical disco which we never found. The restaurant serves typical Cuban fare with a large selection of perfectly good cold plates and a basic hot station where a chef will cook some meat and fish. Breakfast was also good with a wide range of cereals and pastries.
A short walk down the hill behind the main part of the hotel leads to a large abandoned building and allotment where the hotel sources some of its vegetables.
Excursions into the surrounding jungle and treks, aboard the ex Soviet ZIL trucks are both cheap and highly recommended.
Polished luxury it isn't, but authentic and unique Cuba it most certainly is.

"Cuba at it again"

Newly refunished family bungalow was not satisfactory due to the small and uncomfortable double-bed (140x190 cm) with un-even legs. Good, clean bathrooms with shower (heated during the day by solar water heater) and A/C in all rooms. The mattresses were uncomfortable and the bed wobbly. The kitchen was without any tools or equipment for cooking or even making teas/coffees. Small mini-bar fridges in bedrooms for cooling self-obtained water or refreshments. No shopping available on premises, except water/drinks. Hotel restaurant was on a pre-made menu of either meat or fish. No vegetarian options.Service was basic, and complaints were taken personally, and nothing was improved during the stay. The safe did not work.

Beautiful and spacious family forest bungalow in the hills

Not for a long stay, as the place is remote. Access is by very steep roads, difficult for a small car. But as an access point for the National Park the place is fine. Good rooms, reasonable food, not too expensive.

Remote hotel in the mountains

I wasn’t expecting much from this mountain top lodging; after all the website does admit it was built in the 50s. But 60 years of being run down and operated by government folk who have no concept of service, make it a destination only for the bold traveler with extremely low standards. Let’s just say cleanliness and maintenance have yet to be discovered. Our cabin was falling apart and the only things saving Caburni from a 1 Star review were a delightful server called Maria and our realization that there’s simply no budget in Cuba for government operations. We were staying in Toco only for the scenery and hiking. Ask for Yasiel as your tour guide; he’s super knowledgeable, interesting and considerate and turned our experience from negative to enjoyable.
