Lovely staff, perfect visit. We came here in november and were greeted with a warm welcome, staff is very helpful and kind. Breakfast options were limited, but the staff was kind enough to provide extra options at our own liking. Rooms were very clean. Location was also close enough to the beach and restaurants. I can really recommend staying here - once again, very kind staff.

Great stay in the bungalows.  No a/c but was very cool with the ceiling fan. Reception staff were brilliant and so helpful. Wonderful al fresco breakfast and nice pool area. Three of four restaurants and a mini market within walking distance. No fridge but they provide a cooler and ice. Unlimited free water which is good as you cannot drink the tap water. The towels/ sheets may look a little yellow but this is just the minerals in the water.  

Great experience - recommended. Without a car it is difficult to get around but the hotel does hire bikes

This is an interesting and unique place to stay. We were there for 2 nights and appreciated the Tibetan character of the cabina, the many statues and flora on the grounds,and just the warm and comfortable vibe. The cabina was in the Tibetan style, simple but very comfortable.
The location is great…about a mile from the craziness of puerto viejo, but close enough to get there quickly. Beach right across the street. Breakfast was simple but still very nice. Service was excellent.
I would like to single out Augustin at the front desk. He was amazing. Warm, engaging, thoroughly wanting to please us and he clearly went above and beyond to do so. Just a really sweet and nice person.
We would definitely stay there and highly recommend the hotel. Also the cabinas, which I recommend, made the experience not feel like a “hotel.”

Unique place to stay

At Lanna Ban Hôtel Amalia has welcomed us like good known friends. The stuff was very kind and helpful in every way. During breakfast you can watch the birds, at night you can see frogs and the beautiful lotus flowers. The hotel is good located and highly recommended!

Felt like home

The bungalows were amazing, great pool and the beach is crossing the street. Jimmy's work is amazing, he arranged everything for us and it was great! The breakfast was good with eggs, croissants and fruits. Everything was very clean and well managed.

Awesome!

One of the prettiest bungalow type hotels I have stayed in. Beach front... so you hear the ocean roaring and rocking you to sleep. The pool is nice tucked back under amazing trees and got to see tucans flying by... one of the most amazing treats are the lotus flower gardens... speechless!
The room, bedding, bathroom and amenities great. Breakfast in the terrace delicious. The service was outstanding... specially Andrey, he was always available to assure we were happy! 
I know some complain about the traffic noice... it didn’t bother us at all... what woke us up one morning were the howler monkeys screaming! Awesomeee! I found that for the price it is worth a longer visit

Amazing, private and relaxed stay

How happy we were to find the Hotel Lanna Ban after a very lamentable accommodation experience in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.  This small hotel with tastefully appointed cabins and well kept gardens captures a cozy Polynesian style and invites relaxation.

Colorful tropical birds along with Sloths and Howler Monkeys can easily be spotted in the magnificent tall jungle trees that border the property; and the swimming pool is a welcome and refreshing activity at any time of day.  Also great for children.

The entire staff headed by Mr. Jimmy Arrieta, showed a cordial, helpful professionalism going beyond the call of duty, and to all guests, adding so much to our stay.

We loved watching the waves crashing on the beach from the comfort of rocking chairs on our cabin’s little patio.  

The hotel provides a delicious and abundant breakfast of fresh tropical fruit, to-die-for croissants, perfect scrambled eggs, orange juice and plenty of Costa Rican coffee.

Extra towels for the pool, cold bottles of drinking water, restaurant recommendations and anything we needed were supplied immediately and in the most friendly manner.

Thank you, Hotel Lanna Ban, we enjoyed our stay very much and highly recommend a visit!

Warm hospitality in an exotic setting!

I had a wonderful stay at the Lana Ban, and my only regret is that it was so short. I ended up here after "escaping" from a bad experience elsewhere, and decided on the Lana Ban due to a very good last-minute rate as well as the proximity of the hotel to where I was staying at the time.

I turned up long before their normal check-in time, but the receptionist was happy for me to occupy the room. His friendly and efficient service definitely contributed to my positive experience at this hotel.

It is a small hotel with only about 8 or so bungalows, so it is quiet and peaceful despite being right on the main road to Puerto Viejo. The small garden is beautifully maintained, as are the buildings.

The bungalows are fantastic - Thai inspired design, lots of dark wood, very spacious sleeping area and a huge and modern bathroom. The decor is minimalist but extremely functional and everything is of high quality, including the bed linen. My bungalow did not have air conditioning, but the cleverly designed shutters and the ceiling fan was enough to cool the space down. Both from the room and the balcony there is a view to the ocean (on the other side of the road) and the sound of the waves lull you to sleep at night.

The included breakfast was standard but fine. Complimentary bottles of drinking water are available at reception, as are beach mats and towels.

The hotel is situated in Cocles, which is a few kilometers outside Puerto Viejo. The beach across the road from the hotel is quite nice, but there are many wonderful beaches in the area, so it's recommended to check them all out. Hiring a bicycle for around $5 per day is an excellent option for exploring the surrounds. There are shops and restaurants within walking distance, so if you're not after the party scene, the location is actually a bonus.

I highly recommend this hotel and hope to return very soon.

Thai charm with a touch of Caribbean

What I liked
The hotel is in a perfect location, biking down the strip from Playa Cocles into Puerto Viejo de Talamanca town on a bike I rented from the hotel was one of the best parts of my trip. The hotel is located very close to La Nena's (the best Caribbean food restaurant in Cocles and arguably Puerto Viejo, in my opinion). The agoutis that wandered around the hotel outside were adorable and the hotel architecture was beautiful, it looked even better than the pictures displayed. The staff (Griselda, Juan and the lady with the brown hair who helped out with breakfast - I unfortunately did not get her name) were lovely and always willing to help. I improved some of my Spanish through my daily conversations with Griselda.

What could be improved
- The wifi was not reliable -  luckily for me my phone's network provider worked quite well, so I did not need to rely on the wifi too much but if you do plan on coming to CR, you must make sure your network provider provides a good internet service as unstable wifi connection was a problem throughout something all of Costa Rica, not just at this hotel.

- The response times via emails and messages could be better - The delay in response time and the fact that a system error meant that my booking was temporarily cancelled made me a little apprehensive about staying at the hotel but in the end, I am glad I did.

- Doors do not lock properly - The hotel doors do not lock properly with the keys provided and can easily be opened with a little bit of force even after they have been 'locked'. The staff claimed that the area (Playa Cocles) was very safe and that the doors not locking properly was not going to be an issue as they had plenty of security and cameras (which was all true during my time there). However the doors not being able to lock properly was a red flag for me and I sincerely hope the hotel will consider investing in proper door locks for guests.

- Very easy for mosquitos to get in - I received a lot of mosquito bites when here, so you do need to be meticulous about keeping your doors closed and relying on the AC  to stay cool - which worked well. The excellent thing is that there were NO cockroaches in my (upper floor) room which is something I unfortunately experienced at another Air BNB in San Jose.

Overall I would stay at the hotel again. I went to both La Fortuna and Puerto Viejo during my time in Costa Rica and Puerto Viejo was by far my favourite out of both places.

Good Location, pretty rooms and friendly staff

Very Thai feeling rooms, spacious and clean. 2 x double beds. We needed an extra bed which the staff sorted out quickly and efficiently. Breakfast was lovely. Free coffee between 4 and 6 pm. The pool was awesome, and the grounds were lovely. Over the road from the beach and next door to the Jaguar rescue centre.
