We were two families with small kids including a baby. Mr. Zhang and his wife were incredible hosts. Rooms were comfortable and clean and the kids loved the kids area in each room with beds and toys. The food served for dinner was really nice as well as breakfast. Mr zhang also arranged our cars and the itinerary for the tulous. I really recommend this place .

Very well preserve historical village. It's history dates back to 1426. A village started then by a lady with her two sons. A family tree document is a gem. Bedsides, it's surrounded by awesome nature for city children to explore. Hotel owner/operator is extremely helpful. 

Get to know the Hakka and enjoy nature


I spent the first night in Taxia here. If you want to experience a night in a renovated tulou, I recommend this atmospheric and comfortable place. The place looks lovely, nice old-tulou-style atmosphere and comfortable clean rooms. I liked exploring this part of town since it’s far less touristy than the other part of the village near the bridge. There are still several tulous here, including a round one. 
I didn’t realise they had a restaurant where you can have dinner.  It might come in handy since it’s rather far and dark to walk back (solo) from the other part of town where the restaurants are after dinner. 
It’s very convenient to walk here from the bus stop where the ‘route A’ bus drops you, however you’ll need to call to be picked up as it’s not signposted - or at least not in English.

To get to some of the tulous without chartering a car:
Take shuttle bus 6 from the Nanjing high speed train station (use the toilet here rather than at the bus station ;-)  to the bus station in Nanjing town. From there you take a bus, also a bus nr 6 but a different one, to the tourist distribution centre. You will already drive past several tulous before you get there. From the distribution centre you have several options, a.o. A and B:
 
Route A (Tiánluókēng cluster, including some viewpoints, Yùchāng Lóu and Taxia village)
Taxia is on route A. On this route different tourist buses connect several sights, meaning you have to take out your luggage and carry it around the sights you are visiting because there is no place to leave it during your visit. For the viewpoints that’s not such a problem, but it’s especially annoying at Yùchāng Lóu, that’s why I walked back there from Taxia later (3 km one way). If I would do this part again, I would leave my big bag at the tourist centre and just take a small backpack with me on the A route buses.

Beautiful place, recommended of you want to stay in a tulou

Qingdelou is a beautiful little tulou (earth building) on the edge of a small picturesque village. We stayed here for two nights and found it to be a wonderful base from which to explore the surrounding area and the amazing variety of tulou. The courtyard is beautifully decorated and tea is always available at the massive wooden tea table.  The accommodation is fairly basic but we had ensuite rooms and my parents had a sitting room area as well as the bedroom.  The rooms were equipped with air-conditioners that could also be used for heating and hot water was very hot.  Food was provided in the building next door and it was delicious on every occasion. If you are not used to travelling in China you may find that the beds are somewhat hard and the breakfast options in particular may not be what you are used to although there were always eggs and steamed bread rolls. 
Our tour was organised through Apple Travel who were excellent and provided a very professional service throughout. I would particularly recommend the services of Driver Wu (he speaks no English but was very helpful even for non-Chinese speakers); ask for him when you book with Apple or he can be reached on his mobile phone number 13606063324.

Amazing opportunity to stay in a real tulou

We had the most amazing stay at the Qingdelou Inn. We found the owners to be very welcoming and helpful. It gave us a very authentic experience in a quiet town amidst the fantastic surrounding sights.

The Inn gave authenticity to our trip but the hospitality of the staff was the most impressive feature. They even cooked us lunch and gave us a lift back to the train station.

What an amazing place!

This Inn is located in an original 272 year old Hakka Tulou house and run by the Zhang family in the 22nd generation. Most of the rooms are recently refurbished and equipped with bathrooms and sit toilets. Taxia is an old village along a small river in a deep valley. Local people are very friendly and smile when you greet them. Most of the population is quite old, many over 80 years old. This suggests a healthy climate for longevity. 
The inn itself has over 20 rooms, some with attached bathrooms. One room 312 is a "suite" with a sitting room. Wifi is a bit weak and often not working in the rooms, but o.k. in the lobby area.
Mr. Zhang and his brother are excellent cooks. Meals are served in an attached building and are very tasty. But there are also several restaurants along the road in Taxia.
Overall Mr and Mrs Zhang make this place a family centered great experience of hospitality. Every evening they serve tea to all guest and create an ambiance of cosines even though they do not speak English. If required they organise pick up at Xiamen airport. It take around 3 hours to reach Taxia by car.

Great hospitality in real Tulou house

Basic accommodation in traditional Fujian Tulou. It rained heavily during my stay but everything in order within the building The small town is quiet and relax at night. Need to go outside for breakfast but choice is limited. Also hotel can arrange direct transportation back to Xiamen.

Small room with ensuite bathroom.  Has hot/ cold water for shower and heating in the winter time.  Nights could get quite cold.  The owner could cook the 3 meals when you tell them that you will eat there.  We did not know initially that they would serve meals, because they did tell us, we end eating some meals outside.  Restaurant have a tendency to close early like 6:30pm.  We had a comfortable stay.  Our room was on the 3rd floor, lot of steps up and down.
