Chengdu Mix Hostel Backpackers

Would recommend to anyone who goes to Chengdu, given that they wont mind staying at a hostel, not a hotel. The hostel is located north of the city centre but close enough that getting to the city centre doesnt feel like a hassle. The personnel speak really good english and are very service minded. They are obviously used to having western guests and are very accommodating. Rooms and bedsheets were clean. Check-in experience was the best I've ever had - better than any luxury hotels I've stayed at. I arrived with my wife and we're in our early 30s looking for local sights and experiences like sichuan food and seeing the pandas. The first thing they hand us is their own map of city which is quite standard. Then they give us a hand-drawn map of the neighbourhood with recommended restaurants other necessary information like ATMs, pharmacies, subway stops and such. Amazing! Then they hand us a menu of activities: both what activities the hostel arranges on-site (hot-pot night, dumpling night, Mahjong class, karaoke) and third-party activities like going to the Panda Centre, hiking, food tours, cooking classes. Our check-in resulted in that we booked a walking food tour, trip to the panda centre and signed up for a Mahjong class the next night at the hotel. Our entire itinerary could be decided on and booked during check in! Basically we said to them that we wanted to do X and Y on days A and B and they fixed the rest. But the BEST part of it all was the Mahjong class which was held by the Ayis (the employed maidens) who spoke zero english. They taught us the game and rules with hand gestures and physically showing us how to move and arrange the tiles. We even learned strategies from them without be able to speak to each other! TL:DR - perfect for people who want to experience local culture and get great service from people who understands westerners' needs when visiting China
