So much potential!!! Let's begin by saying the staff were wonderful and attentive. The grounds however left so much to be desired. I do understand the need for a large generator but it's location creates such a noisy environment for the rooms and common space. The meals are very pricey and to be honest lackluster. Unfortunately I could not enjoy the one appetizing item on the buffet, the crepes, due to the presence of baby roaches. Our room did not match the lovely photos we saw advertised online. The facilities are run down and need a severe overhaul. At the current price I would expect so much more. In fact I've experienced better for less all over Vietnam.

They ripped us off, charged several bills two times. 

Nice place, but full of trash and incapable staff. Would not recommend going here. Monkey Island Resort is much better.

This place could be nice, but horrable staff makes it a nightmare. The kajaks are a joke, so is the pool table and everything else they have to offer. Poor wifi too.

Go to Monkey Island Resort :))

We spent 2 nights there and the total experience was generally okay.
It’s pretty normal that asia is not famous for it‘s best customer service but this experience was very disappointing as we got charged twice for our drinks and also solving the issue with the property manager was not possible. They came up with different ideas why there could not be any double charging.

This is annoying for people leaving a good tip on the island.

Nice property with bad staff service

Cat Ong Beach Cottages has lots of potential to be a lovely resort but unfortunately it is not maintained very well making it very expensive for what it is. Things are very run down here which really lets it down. The decor inside the rooms was tatty, the sheets and towels had holes worn into them and the beach was messy-not with rubbish that had washed up but with bits of brick and old plant pots from the site. There is new building work in progress but the older cottages need more maintenance as well. The room I stayed in had obviously been split into two smaller rooms with the door boarded but you could hear everything from the next room very clearly. The balcony outside felt a bit unsteady and the furniture was torn and messy. The menu seems a bit improvised and the veggie options are not very good. 
The private beach is lovely and it’s so nice to wake up to the sound of the sea and the sun in the morning but the sun disappears by early afternoon and by evening you can hear the music from Cat Ba drifting over. 
It was difficult to communicate to arrange transfer to the island and despite having communicated with them prior to arrival they were not where I was told and I had to ask another hostel to contact them for me to be able to get there. 
My travel agent had arranged a refund with them for a change in dates but the manager was very reluctant to give it to me and got quite angry, but all the other staff especially the boat driver were lovely!

Expensive and poorly maintained!

We visited this resort as part of a 3D2N trip of halong bay. Based on the reviews we were very apprehensive but we turned up and were pleasantly surprised.

YES it’s basic. YES there’s rubbish being washed up on the beach but for some reason western people don’t seem to take into consideration that the ocean is choppy and there is a town across the way from the island so OF COURSE rubbish is going to be washed up. Most of Vietnamese coastline around halong has littler and it pretty much no good for swimming so you can’t come here expecting perfect swimming conditions.

There has been a lot of effort put into the decor of this place but it has a rustic feel, it’s not run down. Plus it seems they are still putting work in to make it better. There’s an attention to detail in the rooms and it’s clean and presentable.

Overall I would say it’s definitely worth it as apposed to staying on the boat for 2 nights as it’s more relaxed and easy going. We could not have stayed 2 nights on the boat. 

Ignore bad reviews as most of these people are probably stuck up their own backsides and inconsiderate when visiting poorer countries :)

We just came back from the hotel. We booked 3 nights but left after one night. The hotel is not what it seems on the pictures. Very dirty and not well maintained. Stains in our sheets, hair from other guest around our bed, other guests had rats in their room and others had electrical wires through their room. Also the hotels taxi boat came way too late and because of that we missed our Day Tour through Halong Bay.

There was trash everywhere on the beach, there are no kayaks or a beach volleyball net like on the picture. We usually stay in hostels so we are not really “luxury people” but for our 4 year anniversary we wanted something not special but it turned out to be one big disappointment. 

We told the hotel owner we wanted to check out and only pay for 1 night and our food/drinks and laundry. He didn’t agree and one of the staff members started screaming to my boyfriend in Vietnamese. He really wanted us to pay everything but we didn’t agree because it was not fair because the price is $60 a night and totally not worth it. I told the owner I was really sorry about the situation and that the resort really could be something nice if it was clean and taken care of but we just didn’t feel right there. 

We really told him we only wanted to pay one night and told him that if he didn’t agree we would leave. 
 The hotel owner started threatening us by calling the police and 4 guys from his staff surrounded me so I didn’t stand a chance. I really didn’t feel safe and I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go here. I have travelled all over the world and this really the worst experience I ever had. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable and unsafe while traveling.  Even one star is way too much.

The owner really doesn’t care about his customers and is really about the money. He literally said he didn’t care what kind of review we would write or if we called booking.com he just wanted his money.

Please spend your time somewhere else

Unsafe Situation

Cat Ong Beach Cottages was very very dirty and run-down. There were dirty dishes, dirty laundry and dead bugs in the communal areas. There was rubbish all over the beach. Our room was different to the image booked and it was certainly a worse room even though they told us it was an upgrade. We had dead bugs in our room and the water ran out in our shower, meaning we could not shower. We had no power throughout our stay in our room, we had to be in the dark and could not charge our phones. The bar man Tony was really lovely and made delicious cocktails other than that we were extremely disappointed and would not recommend staying here.

Terrible Hygiene

Great location, great views  & small beach, not many cottages.
Would have been great back in the day, but now  run down & not maintained well. Dirty & unhygienic. 
We went with little expectations & still came away disappointed. I would not recommend.
