Stayed with a large groups of friends over a weekend in September.  On paper this property ticks a lot of the excellent boxes, but in reality it needs a whole lot of updating.

House is “upside down” - so bedrooms are downstairs (except 2) and living area and kitchen upstairs.  The upstairs flooring is creaky, so any movement upstairs results in anyone sleeping downstairs being disturbed.  You can’t even tiptoe without making a sound.

There were NO extras, not even a small welcome basket (which isn’t something I expected).  But there wasn’t even a sniff of a teabag!  I raised this with the owner who said “it’s self catering” and “There’s a Sainsburys up the road.”  Sorry but even hotels provide you with tea and sugar!!  And I have stayed in plenty of self catering properties and have ALWAYS had tea/coffee/sugar etc.

You have to bring your own towels (bath and pool).  Apparently this is an “eco” decision, not sure how so.

Pool area needs an upgrade.  Broken, damaged tiles and a LOT of chlorine.  So much so that eyes were stinging and skin became very irritated.

Games room is a separate building, this kept the kids entertained.

Downstairs en suite shower - the plug is blocked so water doesn’t flow down quick enough resulting in an overflow of water everywhere.  Not great when it is a walk in shower.

This has the potential to be a 4*/5* property but found a lot of little things let it down.  Needs a big update.

Should be a 4*, but it’s really a 2*/3*

We had an amazing time here, there is plenty of room and the facilities are spot on. We were a party of 8 adults and 4 kids from the ages of 3-13years old. We also had 2 small dogs. 

The swimming pool was a major hit with the kids, but being in a room of its own is quite hot so take plenty of drinks in with you! There is also the hot tub, we found that it got dirty quite quickly but if being used alot it's bound to happen. However, very nice and easy to use. Was appreciated more when the kids had gone to bed :)

Many descriptions don't say the correct bedroom amounts. 
So il go facts first: 6 bedrooms & 1 pull out footon in the living area

The first bedroom - a double. 
The next (under the kitchen) is the king-size with an ensuite and walk in wardrobe. This has double doors out to the garden.
opposite the King, is a room with 2 singles and bunk beds (so 4 beds), this also has a door into the garden but has one of the beds infront. 
the main bathroom, bath and shower is also on the ground floor, Next door to this is a single kids bedroom, the boiler is located here and can be noisy when hot water is used. 
Then if you go upstairs there is a bedroom with 2 singles (this room is REALLY hot), Opposite is another double with an ensuite. 

There are no fans or air con at the cottage, so if you are visiting when the weather is warm I'd absolutely suggest taking some. 

The living area and kitchen is upstairs, so if people are awake and up when others are sleeping downstairs be prepared for what sounds like a heard of Elephants, the floors are thin and noisy! Some of our party wake at 5am and it meant anyone sleeping downstairs was awake too! So put the light sleepers upstairs ha ha! 

The games room has some free and some that are not. 
Free = dance machine, foosball, pool & old games machine, table tennis
Not Free = basketball £1, Fruit machine 10p, sweets 20p

The foosball machine needs some tlc as the rubbers are missing on some of the poles, so keep an eye on little ones. We had a couple of injuries from the smaller ones with that. 

The dance machine is partly in Japanese and quite loud, we found it a tad annoying but hey ho.

The pool table does get a bit restricted at angles but didn't stop us playing. 

The table tennis has to be played outside as no space inside 

There is also a basketball net outside 

There is a shower, toilet, washing machine and tumble dryer in the games room too. 

Outside area, behind the games room there is a massive area with no fencing, just watch adventurous kids and pets :)

There is a really small space for hanging laundry (if you do any when on holiday), in the utility room, but there is a tumble dryer. 

Our biggest problem was with rubbish, when we arrived the outdoor bins were full and bin day was 3 days away. So 12 people with no where to put rubbish was a nightmare and lots of wasps. 

We went to Roves farm for a day trip which was really nice definitely recommend! 

although some of that sounds like a moan, it's truly not. Just tips really or things to make aware of because sometimes it helps to know :)

5/5  No need to leave everything you need in one place

We booked the cottage for my 30th birthday party and we came along as a family of 10 with ages ranging from 12-62. What can I say.. it was worth the wait. The cottage is huge and the swimming pool and games room were off to the side so no noise if somebody wanted to go to bed. There was so much to do activity wise that there was never a dull moment. The host Andrew was extremely accommodating given the booking was initially cancelled  due to covid and rescheduled. He was very fair with us and genuinely wanted us to enjoy ourselves which we very much did.

I would definitely recommend staying here as everything you need is on site and you can really detach from life/work in this countryside cottage. The only negative was that we didn't book for longer!

A really great get away for a family get together

A family of 12 aged from 5 years to 72 had a great weekend. A large well fitted out kitchen, separate dining area, comfortable lounge to accommodate the family. 
The large heated swimming and hot tub were well used. The well equipped games room kept all ages amused. Nice large grass garden for a good run around.
An excellent stay.

Gordon N - Super family weekend

My wife and I booked Ashdene Cottage for a pre-Christmas get together in December with family. We are a real mix of ages from 88 to 4 years and we were please to say that the cottage catered for all of our needs. The house, pool and games area were all unexpectedly clean and well kept. There was plent of room and loads to do in the cottage, the weather wasn't great so the games room was a real bonus. 

We had a family meal at the Highworth Hotel nearby and were very impressed price vs quality well worth a visit for a family meal. The owner Wendy was really helpful and we really felt welcome so thank you to the owners it really made our stay complete. 

We are very happy to recommend Ashdene Cottage to our friends and will certainly be returning at a warmer time of the year.  - Sav & Sophie and family

Great break at a great place that catered for all of our needs

We stayed here for a weekend with our extended family in October and the weather was a real Indian summer. Lovely cottage with loads to do inside and out, the cottage had all that we needed. Games room was a hit with the boys and the pool and hot tub kept us busy. We visited Roves Childrens Farm 2 miles away and went to the designer outlet centre in Swindon about 20 minutes by car. There was far too much to do in a single weekend. We would have loved to have used the open fireplace but the weather was unusually far too warm. Really clean and well kept with friendly helpfull staff. Will definately put this place on the shortlist for another visit.

Fabulous 'Indian Summer' Weekend in October with family

We were looking for a place for my sisters 40th birthday celebrations for us and the family and booked this place last minute. We needed a place that was children and dog friendly. Ashdene is a great place, the photos don't do it justice so it is always good to be pleasently surprised. The pool room was great for the kids and adults, the whole place had just been decorated so there was a slight smell of paint,  we spent all weekend playing water polo, awsome gamesroom loved the basketball machine.

Would I recomend this place - absolutley!!.

Wonderful place fab family get away with loads to do

Had an amazing weekend at Ashdene Cottage. The house was amazing! The kids loved every second of it. Great location and owners very attentive and accommodating. Very clean and tidy and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves
