We booked a night at this B&B in advance, with the aim of taking the border collie up a local hill called The Cat's Back.  On the Saturday morning it looked like someone was throwing a bucket of water against our window - there would be no 'glorious views' from the top of the Cat's Back for us, and we decided to leave the dog behind, and make the best of a weekend of torrential rain and floods.  We had no trouble finding the place, using the guide on our phones (google maps) and moved the car down to the car park after dropping off heavy bags at the door.  The owner greeted us warmly, and gave us a tour - I think the idea of sitting with other guests at breakfast is great - would have loved to have met other guests. The hotel reminded me, on this windswept night, of the hotel in Agatha Christie's 'The Mousetrap', which we saw recently in a touring production. I was hoping to meet some kind of Colonel Mustard and Miss Peacock at breakfast.
 Sadly this early in the season and with the weather warning of 'threat to life' there were no other guests.  There are photos and pictures telling the story of a family as it grew, and lots of local maps and resources.  The room was fine - it gives the impression that you are staying in someone's home - which is what B&B's used to be.  If I wanted a sterile soul-less but pristine experience, I could just travel the country staying at chain hotels.  We dined out at a local restaurant '1861' which was lovely, though the phone failed us as there was no signal.  In the remoter parts of Wales I think it's better to have a good map, for when the signal drops.  The breakfast was really excellent - I can't get eggs that hot and perfect.  We loved all the local information, and crucial local knowledge about which roads would be flooded - managed to get home safely.  We will be going back, when it's dry enough to get up the hills.

What a B&B should be!

This was an interesting stop, in that I mean there is the curse of may you stay in interesting B&Bs.  We were warned that the Bynhonddu was hard to find by navigation device, but were thrilled when ours took us right to the doorstep.  Bonus!  But we were told we needed to use the parking lot at the bottom of the hill and shouldn't stray too far as the property next to us was off-limits (the buildings are connected).  OK.  We parked the car and walked up the hill to something out of a gothic novel.  Keith was very loquacious and explained that the house was built in two phases, one Tudor and the other I believe was Neolithic. We stayed in the Neolithic wing.  The room was small, but comfortable.  The spring water out of the tap was glorious.  We were serenaded by a herd of sheep most of the evening which were bedding down in the hillside next to our room.  The room had terrible WiFi and we ended up schlepping to the dining room to check email.  There isn't a pub really in walking distance so you should be prepared to drive.  The hot breakfast the next morning was fresh, hot, and delicious, definitely straight from the farm.  Keith was more than happy to regale us with whatever popped into his mind, whereas I don't think I heard Carol utter a single word.  This B&B is weird and wonderful at the same time.  I would recommend it definitely as a singular experience.

A lesson in contrasts

Beautiful location sat nav doesn't get you there, but we were prewarned so just ring owners when near b@b and Keith will easily guide you there, Keith and Carol were very accommodating full of useful information, stunning locally sourced ingredients for breakfast, the room lovely, cosy and clean,as everything you need, me and my fiancee would definitely recommend and would love to go back again, and do some more exploring.maybe more than just one night next time.

My 50th birthday celebrations

We stayed here as it was on Offas Dyke path and it looked like the only sensible option after walking from Hay.  The house is up a long drive a long way from anywhere.  While the house shows its age the hosts are well meaning.  It was a little tricky getting bags up narrow stairs and trying to avoid knocking pictures off the walls.  Our room was small with an even smaller bathroom.  Both were clean but desperately in need of redecoration.  Breakfast was fine. Given my time again I would probably have walked another hour to a B&B we passed the next day in Llangattock that looked a lot better.

Weird

The rroms/bathroom are a little small but that is more than made up for with the pride that the oweners take in the provenance of where their producs are from (usually made to the ir own secret recipe) along with the natural spring water source and even down to  only using fair trade products in all of the rooms. The only down side (after a 21 mile walk is having to walkj a further mile each way to and from the pub (to eat).

Offas Dyke/11th Wedding Anniversary walk

Having read the reviews we were a little bit anxious about our stay at this bnb but we were pleasantly surprised! It is in the middle of nowhere but taxis are happy to drive out to it and it was within a short drive to a number of excellent restaurants. We stayed because we were going for a meal at The Walnut Tree which was only 5 miles away. 
The couple were very friendly and were understanding when we arrived at 6.30 due to traffic and getting lost. They cooked a delicious locally sourced breakfast with generous servings and constantly offered more tea/coffee/juice. It was slightly unusual eating with the other guests but there is no space for an alternative and the other guests were friendly.
We stayed in the Victorian room which had lovely high ceilings and none of the issues described below. 
The couple obviously take great pride in their bnb and also take the time to talk to their guests. This bnb has character, beautiful surroundings and if you fancy something different to a traditional anonymous hotel then this is the place for you. 

Pleasantly surprised

Walking Offa's Dyke in a southerly direction from Hay, this was a convenient place to stay.  I like to be positive and there were things to commend it: v quiet up a long long drive, there's history to the house which Keith is fully genned up on, it's a mile from the local pub which had decent food and beers after a day's walk and the couple are nice enough. The arrival window of 5-6 was tough to keep, and after phoning them and being asked to be there by 6.30 cos we were late, I knew I had to run the last 2 miles. on arrival, Keith had a lot of enthusiasm about the history of the house, while I breathlessly dripped sweat.!  He was not so enthusiastic about me and my friend being vegetarian.  He's a character and he and his wife went out after 8.00, so not sure why we had such a narrow checkin time. After my run, the walk to the pub was a bit knackering.  I was surprised when their car passed me on the long drive and they didn't offer to give me a lift. My friend had a sleepless night cos of a reaction to the bedding, but that can't be held against out hosts. Our hostess was kind at breakfast and our host was an affable character, who would have enjoyed us more had we been more into the history of the house, his passion, and not been vegetarian I suspect. All in all, we had a good laugh about it all later, and I wouldn't say don't go, just be prepared for quirkiness.

Hmmm....

Stayed for one night on the way back from Snowdonia. Keith and his wife were very welcoming and knowledgeable about the house and area. The breakfast was perfect and all local produce. The directions were very clear but be careful you don’t end up on the mountain. Close to Abergavenny and was a perfect stopover with our dog Freddie to take a walk up Sugarloaf mountain. 😊
