For my partner and children, this was a first time experience. The City of Edinburgh was a place they had never visited and was quite excited for the sights to be seen. However, after a beautiful morning, we all decided it was finally time to locate our accommodation for the evening and refresh. After travelling passed it three times. From the outside it hasn't got much in the way of indication of being a guest house, we were lead down the stairs to our room. At first glance the room was pleasant. It was a huge room that accommodated 2 single beds, 1 double bed, a travel cot, desk, wardrobe & the hearth of a disused fire. With all this in the room, there was still plenty of room for more. It felt nice.

After unpacking our evening wear, it was time to have a relaxing shower to refresh. The bathroom was tiny, barely big enough for two people. The shower was on the right as you entered the door, the sink right in front of you and the toilet to the left. The toilet was wedged into a small cubicle style area. The shower has about a foot step up to it (from a tile floor) and the door, is a swing door, which connects with the sink when opened. The shower head had obviously not been cleaned in a good while as it was caked in what looks like lime scale. The exiting of the shower, is probably the most terrifying experience of the room. With no floor mat and just tile flooring, the only way to stop slipping is to use one of the towels they provide (as you have a great step down from the shower). 

After a nice evening out with the family, it was time to relax, before heading off to dreamland. A little game of 'chase the baby' around the floor lead into a discovery of some free snacks (well, so my 8 month old baby thought) under the double bed, there was cheese balls, which had gone stale as rocks, leading me to believe they had been there for a while. The night grew on and it was time to put the children to bed. My daughter decided to choose the bed next to the hearth and as she climbed into bed, we discovered that the plug behind the bed had some nice exposed wiring (thankfully, no exposed wires). Further look around, we saw that the bathroom light switch had the same exposed wiring. As my partner turned on her beside lamp, she never thought she would be blinded on this holiday by the lamp rotating to face her, upon trying to return it to its rightful place, she discovered it was loose and broken and could not be placed upright. Finally in bed, the room began to get warm, For mid February, it was too hot. It was time to get a nice cool breeze in. Nope. The windows are painted shut, except for one, which opens 2 inches. The room turned was unbearable hot throughout the night, even with the window open. This room was very frustrating. 

The next day we left and we leisurely walked back to town, it takes about 30 minutes to get back to town direct. The area is nice and on Sundays there was a artisan market just round the corner, highly recommended for a visit.

Better out than in.

Yes a cheap place to stay ,but needs some tlc and a good dust !!! Bedding clean ,thankfully !!! Very small compact room ,bathroom tiny ,shower hit and miss with hot water ,room on the ground floor found it noisy people coming and going ,up and down stairs ,this was also a good walk into the main town ,although a bus service close by but no information as and when it ran ,thought the landlord could benefit having information on this along with local attractions ,surprised at the wifi charge too .

City break 

Good as a base, but not great... There's no frills and the hotel is definitely generally tired and in need of some TLC.

On the plus side the staff are friendly and helpful though and the location is great - only 20 minutes walk from Princes Street.

Ok For a Short Stay

My partner and I stayed at St Bernard's for a couple of nights while visiting Edinburgh. The room was not too bad in terms of commodity. However, internet was not working in the room (although in the advert it said that internet was available in every room). Also, there was an insect trap totally visible to our sight beside the bed, which was quite disgusting. Nevertheless, the locatio was not too bad. It's an overall ok place but needs some improvement.

It's been some time since I stayed in this guest house and at the right price it is fine for a couple of nights.
Bedding was clean and carpet had been hoovered however the room does need some TLC - attention to floor tiles in bathroom, paint, renew carpet and look at some reconstruction of pipes that run through the room.
Staff are friendly and helpful which makes the stay.
Ground level rooms tend to be a bit noisy with people coming and going so pick a room upstairs.
I don't think anything has improved since my last visit but bear in mind the price

Revisit

My partner and I booked a last minute trip to Edinburgh for Hogmanay 2018/19. A lot of accommodation had been booked and this seemed to be the cheapest place we could find for private accommodation. It was incredibly expensive (as was to be expected over the busy Hogmanay period) but what upset me was that my payment didn't go through as one lump payment. The accomodation split it up into three separate payments, which I then had to pay three lots of international transaction fees on, instead of just paying it once. We had to climb three flights of stairs with our bags to get to the room. The bathroom was small and the water in the shower was either boiling hot or freezing cold. There is a 20 minute uphill walk to get into the centre of Edinburgh. The room was too hot and we couldn't change the temperature of the heater, so were left sleeping with the window open, letting a lot of street noise in.
